- Sophie girl, they don't seem to be biting today.
Oop, pardon us, sir.
Sophie, quit it.
Sorry, she's a bit skittish.
You here for the festival?
I assume that's what you're here for, all dressed like that.
Can't say I get the appeal, all that loud music.
Now, wait a minute.
Oh god!
What the hell?
Oh, ah!
- Tonight on KTU-TV it's a Movietron Friday
triple feature of genre insanity.
At eight, it's Iritzu Habori's slicing samurai classic,
"Path of Blood."
At 10, it's mad scientist madness with "Doctor Mantas."
And then at midnight, it's Umberto Ritzo's
surreal Italian horror fest--
- We'll get the town ready
for all of tonight's festivities.
- Absolutely, now we've gotten through
all the micro-shows and happenings,
but let's get to the main event.
- Right, so this year's
Barrington Halloween Festival battle of the bands
will take place on the main stage
at the foot of Lancaster Mountain.
- You'll get to see Whiskey's Wake,
Patterstats, Metropole, Ballerina Maggot, Blank Face,
and the Banshee Riders on the main stage.
- The Banshee Riders, now this'll be
their first time playing in Barrington ever.
It sure is.
- I know, right, exciting stuff.
This year's--
- Kevin are you awake in there?
Yes, Grandma.
- I need you to run some errands for me.
Can you do that?
Yeah, I sure can.
- From the obscure
to the frankly, just weird.
And while the battle of the bands is primarily for locals,
get ready for the out-of-towners to clog up the streets.
- That was the sign for Barrington.
We are now in Barrington.
- Cool, I can already feel the tendrils
of small-town America seeping into my every pores.
- Nat, we're in Barrington.
What?
- We just crossed into the city,
you shoe-gazing nerd.
Screw you, Chet.
- All I'm saying is, the most influential
horror punk band of the decade is playing,
and you'll be at a bar seeing, who was it, Tart?
It's Teek.
Teek, right.
Hey, Brandon, let's start a band where you just
smash on cymbals and I'll loop my guitar into an amp.
People like Nat will think
we're misunderstood and brilliant.
- Yeah, our name would be Swirling Dust Star.
- Music critics don't know anything about music.
- As a professional music journalist
and your boyfriend, I take exception with that.
Nat, let me explain to you the different tiers
of good music, okay now, one.
Forward.
Uh, hey.
Can I help you with something?
Hi, uh, Kevin, Kevin Gordon.
You're Jeff, right?
We had, well uh uh bunch of classes together senior year.
I'm remembering something.
You're dead.
Yeah, I remember you.
You're the guy who just lost me my match.
Oh um, sorry about that.
- Ah, I'm just givin' you guff, but you do owe me a soda.
- So um, how long you back for, man?
- Just a week, my parents wanted me outta their hair.
Thought I should spend some time with my uncle.
I'm terrified that it may become a yearly tradition.
- I remember him having a cabin up in the mountains, right?
Is that where you're staying?
- Yes he does, and no, I'm not.
What do you mean?
- Look, my uncle lives in a creepy cabin up in the mountains
at the mouth of actual ghost mine.
He's insane, he literally drives his motorcycle around
in the mines, looking for rare earth metals, or whatever.
Down here, in the real world, we have batteries, arcades,
places I can get a big soda.
I'm not cut out for whatever it is he does up there.
So, I'm gonna rent a room at the cheapest motel
and sweat it out for the week.
My uncle, that idiot, won't even realize I never showed up.
Anyway, you still up at your grandma's?
Uh, yes, I am.
How's that all goin'?
Oh, you know, good.
- Well, better go find that motel room.
Got any plans for the night?
Not specifically, why?
- Well, The Tower is showing a pristine 35 millimeter print
of "The Grotesque Mirror" tonight.
I guess for the Halloween festival.
"The Grotesque Mirror?"
- Oh, it's this great Italian horror movie from 1976.
It's about this museum where the paintings come alive
and kill people.
- I'll be perfectly honest, Kevin,
that old cheesy movie stuff isn't really my thing.
Also, I just heard that Nichols got a Rust Storm cabinet
last month, so I was gonna go check that out.
Oh, uh, all right.
- Well hey, what time is the movie at?
7:30.
- We should meet up beforehand, get a bite or something.
Yeah, sure.
Is Betty's still open?
It is.
- Their apple pie still kick ass?
- Um, yeah, uh, I think so.
5:30?
Sounds good.
See ya at 5:30.
[relaxed electronic guitar music]
Hm.
[upbeat synth and drumming music]
My god, it's here.
Sir, sir?
I'm sorry?
You need to pay, sir, 27.53.
Oh, of course.
Hey man, I can't break this.
Sir, sir.
Well, okay then.
Thank you.
Our waitress looks like a nurse from the 50s.
- I feel like these waffles are going to give me cholera.
Nice.
What's the matter, Nat,
hometown cooking not what you remember?
It's fine.
Well, all right.
Well, we better get going.
If the food makes me feel like I'm gonna shit blood,
that what, a 5% tip?
Last chance to come see a real band, Nat.
Pass.
Ah, you're such a pill.
Well, we'll meet up after BR's set then.
We'll meet up at the carnival games,
I know how much you love those.
Oh hey, Nat, one day your taste in music won't suck.
- Thanks a lot, uh-huh, take it easy.
- Bye, take care. - Come back.
Rodent Rumble.
- Are you aware that you have a work of art in your diner?
Huh, what was that?
