One day in the late 1960s,

当时我还是个孩子 when I was a boy

在华东,我的家乡济南 in my hometown of Jinan in Eastern China,

I saw a smiling Westerner

穿得像是中国工人 dressed like a Chinese worker

I was astonished.

It was the Cold War

西方与中国断绝了关系 and China was cut off from the West.

This Westerner was the first I'd ever seen

我就像看见外星人一样 and was as alien to me as a creature from outer space.

His name was James Veneris.

He was captured during the Korean War

而后选择了留在中国 and had chosen to stay in China.

Veneris had served

在第二次世界大战时在美军服役 in the U.S. army in World War II

参加了对抗日本的 in the Pacific Campaign

太平洋战争 against the Japanese.

Like many veterans,

他在和平时期的美国,没有找到工作 he was unable to find work in peacetime America,

因而在一九五〇年朝鲜战争爆发的时候 and had re-enlisted at the start of the Korean War

President Truman

以阻止共产主义的扩张 to Korea to stop the spread of Communism.

The USA,with its allies,

打着联合国的旗号 and the flag of the United Nations,

轰炸了北朝鲜,威胁了我的祖国 crushed the North Koreans and threatened my country,

中华人民共和国 the People's Republic of China.

Chairman Mao

将联合国军队 which pushed the UN troops

击退到三八线 back to the 38th parallel.

After three years of war,

联合国指挥部 the United Nations Command

和共产党军队在一九五三年七月二十七日 and the Communist forces signed an armistice

Korea remains split into two countries:

North and South.

There were thousands of prisoners on both sides.

All those who refused repatriation

被转移到了中立地区 to their homeland were transferred to a neutral zone

他们有九十天的时间 and given 90 days

做出他们的决定 to reconsider their decision.

Twenty-three of them,

是美国人,包括詹姆斯·维内里斯 including James Veneris,were Americans.

There was also one British.

: Does anybody want to go home?

: No!

Before the 90 days expired,two Americans,

Edward Dickinson and Claude Batchelor,

决定回家 decided to return home.

- Corporal Batchelor,how did you become a progressive?

By reading several of the books that the Communists had,

和报纸 and newspapers,

慢慢的,一点一点的 gradually,little by little,

I began to believe a lot of their charges

他们对联合国的指控 against the UN side.

Well, really,I never decided to go to Communist China.

I wanted to get my revenge for my buddies that have been killed

和他们对我做的那些事报仇 and starved to death and what they have done to me.

Corporal Edward S. Dickenson,

又回到了我们身边,回到了自由世界 back with us once again here in the free world.

Nevertheless,both were court-martialled

判了十年和二十年的监禁 and sentenced to 10 and 20 years in prison.

If I return,take a look at what happened to Dickenson

I'd be in the same place they are.

More likely up for a death sentence or a prison term.

I don't feel it's right.

I'd like to see every one of you Americans stand up now

起来反对麦克阿瑟和他的所作所为 and oppose McCarthy and his acts.

My name is Harold Webb, from West Palm Beach,Florida.

My name is Aaron Wilson,Urania,Louisiana.

This is a very happy moment for me,for now I am free.

Free from McCarthyism.

Friends, the only way to stop fascism in America

像我一样做 is to do what I have done.

Stand up and fight for our rights.

William C. White,Plumerville,Arkansas.

For the first time in my life,

I've witnessed complete equality.

South Korean,Mexican,Filipino,white men,

和平相处 all mixed together.

My name is Lewis Grigg and my home is in Jacksonville,Texas.

I stayed behind to escape the Red-baiting McCarthy

确信我将永远不去参与 and to assure that I'll never again have to fight

另一个像朝鲜战争一样的非正义战争 in another unjust war,as I did in Korea.

Even if I had wanted repatriation,

像迪金森和巴彻勒那样的命运 the fates of Dickenson and Batchelor

- My name is Richard Tenneson.

I live in Alden,Minnesota. People who hate war

为信念战斗的人们,面临着麦卡锡 and stand up for their beliefs are faced with McCarthy

House Unamerican Activities Committee.

I will return someday,

当我能合法的呼吁和平的时候 when I can speak for peace, lawfully,

这就是我回去的时候 that's when I will return.

Supposedly he's rejected this country.

But I don't believe that was brought about

这是他自己的决定 through his own decision.

My estimation of this situation

他是洗脑的受害者 is that he's a victim of brainwashing

是精神和肉体的双重折磨 that was brought about through mental,

才使他这么做 as well as physical,torture.

The USA was alarmed by the "Red menace" and believed

相信中国对美国战俘 that the Chinese had brainwashed

Senator Joseph McCarthy,

非美国活动委员会的首领 head of the Committee on Unamerican Activities,

利用公众情绪 led a series of investigations

McCarthy branded the 21 soldiers as traitors

I have never forgotten

那个骑着绿色自行车的西方人 the Westerner on the green bicycle

总是想知道詹姆斯·维内里斯 and have always wondered what happened

和其他选择留在中国的 to James Veneris and the other POWs

美国战俘的故事 who chose to live in China.

But 50 years have passed since their fateful decision.

After a long search,

I found one of them,

David Hawkins,

这些人当中最年轻的一个 the youngest of the group.

I met him

当四十七年后他第一次返回中国的时候 on his first trip back to China after 47 years.

It's kind of like coming home,

不管你信不信,这就像… believe it or not. It's like...

是的,这就像回到了 yeah,it's kind of like coming back to a place

承载你很多记忆的地方一样 that there's a lot of memories for you.

The turning point of my life,I guess you would say.

I've always had an affinity for the Chinese people.

I've always wanted to come back to see it later,

看看发生了什么变化 to see what changes were made.

Oh,wow!

It's huge!

It's a whole new city!

Outside of the signs,it looks like one of the freeways

As I travelled with David Hawkins in China,

I realized that it was an act of great courage for him

在影片中露面 to appear in this film.

We are South Koreans,American and British

我们爱自己的家乡,我们的人民和我们的国家 who love our homes, our people and our countries.

What unites us all is our desire for peace,

真正的民主和社会平等 for real democracy and social equality.

Anyone who breathes the word peace in America now

立刻就会被认为,是共产主义者和歹徒 becomes at once a Communist and an outlaw.

But here we have learned much

开始意识到为公共谋福利,而不是私利的时候 and have caught a glimpse of what a man can achieve

一个人会得到什么 when he works for the common good and not for personal gain.

That goal of happiness can never be reached

We believe that our greatest task

维护和平,和为人民赢得民主 is to keep the peace and win democracy for our people.

But if we return, our voices will be silenced.

That is why we are here.

My guest tonight is the youngest U.S. Army turncoat

You'll see him behind me.

He's David Hawkins of Oklahoma City.

Three years ago,the United States was stunned

朝鲜战场上的宣言震惊了 by an announcement from war-torn Korea.

U.S. Army Private David Hawkins

和另外二十个共产党的战俘 and 20 other prisoners of the Communists

They had renounced their own country

消失在中国的红色帷幕下 and disappeared behind Red China's bamboo curtain.

Dave, first of all,let me ask you this.

Another explanation of the turncoats

在一九五五年八月十四日 was suggested in The New York Times

Most of the turncoats really were not converts to Communism

而是为在战俘营里对自己的美国同胞 but were themselves guilty of crimes

犯下的罪行感到内疚 against their fellow Americans in captivity

因而不愿意回国去面对这样的往事 and did not wish to return to face the music.

What about that?

I don't consider that true.

None of the fellows that were with me were...

I read some articles also on this,

在中国收到过这样的简报 and clippings that we received while in China,

说我们是杀人犯 that said that a lot of us were guilty of murder,

或者在军营里 or had committed acts of treason

有叛变的行为 while in the camp,

或者偷过战友的东西 or stolen food from their buddies

或者对战俘的死亡 or was responsible directly

负有直接的责任 for another fellow prisoner of war losing his life.

This is not true.

I joined in September of '49,

正好是在我十六岁生日过后一个月 which was one month after my 16th birthday.

We went to Korea by boat.

We were then a half a day's travel

进行了半天的行军 of the Chinese border.

We kept running

遭遇到了大概有一个营的 into companies' battalions strength of Chinese volunteers

中国人民志愿军 as we were making our ways over the mountains.
