and brought to an end seven decades of Communist rule

in the Soviet Union.

He's leaving behind 15 independent states

which share only a disastrous economy

and an uncertain future.

Russia's President Boris Yeltsin has resigned.

Turning powers over to his Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin.

Hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy Ukrainians

in the streets today

protested against the results of the election.

They claimed Yanukovych's victory was rigged

with reports of ballot stuffing and voter intimidation.

The ruling called for a re-vote in three weeks.

The Orange Revolution of 2004 turned on its head.

Yanukovych didn't lose in 2004.

The victory was taken from him.

Viktor Yanukovych has already claimed victory in the Ukraine Presidential election.

This, if confirmed, is a major coup for the pro-Russian opposition leader.

It's very unlikely that there'll be any kind of large scale demonstrations here

on Independence Square this time round.

The problem of street children in Ukraine

grew after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

The transition process has left the child protection, welfare

and health systems underfunded and neglected.

These teenagers say that this is better than

living with their abusive families

or confined in a state run institution.

It was like hell for me

because I loved them.

I need them.

But this tragedy destroyed everything.

Hope for the future.

The country is making a major shift westwards.

Twenty two years after it declared independence from the Soviet Union and Moscow.

And the Ukraine has been leaning in that direction for years.

Each time it leans a little too far

Putin makes very bad things happen.

Many Ukrainian politicians will tell you

that Moscow's actions are pushing Ukraine

into the arms of the European Union.

The Ukraine plans to sign an association agreement

and free trade accord with the EU...

Russia has been imposing trade barriers

with Ukraine to try to persuade it to join its own customs union.

And so Mother Russia keeps thousands of troops on their doorstep

just to stand watch.

The most important thing for the normal Ukrainian people

is just European values.

Vladimir Putin.
