The video player that finds your subtitles

Open any file or stream. SubDL Player reads the release name, fetches the matching subtitle in your language from millions on SubDL — and when it doesn’t exist yet, AI-translates one in about a minute. Free, no ads, built on libmpv.

Google Play — coming soon APK — coming soon

Version 1.0 is built and in release review. Downloads open here first — no sign-up needed. Source on GitHub.

1. Open any video

Local files, MKV with multiple tracks, HLS and network streams — or tap “Open with SubDL Player” from any app.

2. Subtitles appear

The player reads the release name, searches SubDL and lists every matching subtitle — your language first.

3. Missing? Translate it

No subtitle in your language yet? Plus and Pro members AI-translate the best one with a single tap, right in the player.

Everything a great player needs

Playback parity with the players you already use — plus the one thing none of them do.

Plays everything

libmpv engine: MKV, MP4, HEVC 10-bit, AV1, HLS, RTSP, multi-audio and ASS/SSA styled subtitles. Hardware decoding.

Gestures you already know

Swipe for volume and brightness, drag to seek, double-tap ±10s, long-press 2× speed, pinch to zoom, screen lock.

Right-to-left done right

Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew, Urdu and every CJK script render with the system Noto fonts — no boxes, no broken shaping.

Subtitle controls

Size, position, delay, track picker. Legacy Windows-1256 files load without garbled text.

Resume anywhere

Every file remembers where you stopped. Speed presets from 0.25× to 4×. Fit, fill, stretch, 16:9 and 4:3.

No ads, no junk permissions

No camera, no microphone, no overlay permission. Open source on GitHub, crash reports only if you allow them.

Android TV

Built for the big screen, not shrunk from a phone

One install covers phone and TV. On Android TV and Google TV the player switches to a 10-foot layout where every action is one remote press away.

  • Leanback launcher icon and a remote-first layout — nothing needs a touchscreen.
  • D-pad: left/right seek, up opens subtitles, center play/pause, back closes controls.
  • Connect your SubDL account with a code from your phone — never type an API key on a remote.
  • Same one-tap translate moment on the big screen.

Sideloading on boxes without Google Play: install the APK above via a file manager or the Downloader app.

Your language, even when nobody uploaded it

SubDL Plus and Pro members translate any subtitle into 100+ languages right inside the player. Translations are published back to SubDL, so the next person finds them instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Is SubDL Player free?

Yes. The player is free and has no ads. Searching and downloading subtitles is free as well. AI translation of a missing language is part of SubDL Plus and Pro.

Which devices does it run on?

Android 8.0 and newer on phones and tablets, and Android TV / Google TV boxes (Chromecast with Google TV, NVIDIA Shield, Mi Box and similar). iOS is in progress.

How does it know which subtitle I need?

It reads the video's file name (for example “The.Odyssey.2026.1080p.WEB-DL”) the same way Bazarr does, searches SubDL with a release-aware match, and lists results in your preferred language first. You can always pick another version.

Do I need a SubDL account?

Not to play videos. Connecting a free account gives you a preferred subtitle language and your download history; a Plus or Pro key unlocks one-tap AI translation inside the player.

Why is the APK download and not only Google Play?

Many SubDL users can't use Google Play or prefer to sideload — Android TV boxes especially. The direct APK is the same signed build; it checks for updates itself.

Does it play MKV files with several audio and subtitle tracks?

Yes — that is the reason it runs on libmpv instead of the stock Android player. Switch audio tracks and embedded subtitles from the settings sheet.
