Bobbi: Lexi...
We're ready.
("Amore Mio Aiutami" by Piero Piccioni playing)
Person 1: Wasn't it a lovely memorial?
Person 2: Oh, yes. It was up. It wasn't down at all.
Grandma: A good heart, and, you know,
she takes after him.
Gia: Thanks, Grandma.
-It was so warm and from the heart. -Yes, it was.
-It was just-- It was lovely, dear. -Wasn't it, wasn't it?
You know what? He was a special man.
Neighbor: Did he have life insurance?
Leslie: Uh... a little bit.
We'll figure it out.
Neighbor: But he was young.
Leslie: Yeah, he, he was young.
Neighbor: Are you gonna be able to-- The house, the kids?
-Leslie: We'll figure it out. -Neighbor: Good, good.
-It's, it's gotta be a relief. -Thank you.
Thank you for coming.
-Hey. -How's it goin' over there?
-Leslie: She's asking me all these questions. -Suze: Oh, yeah?
-She skipped class. -Is anyone gonna check on her?
-Is Rue in her room? -Yeah.
-She hasn't opened the door. -Do you think she's okay?
Don't just stand here and gossip. It's rude.
Rue?
-Hey. -Rue: Hey.
These were my dad's.
How are you feeling?
Yeah. I... found this poem, and I thought of you.
Rue: If it's C.S. Lewis, I can't.
-No, it's not. I promise. -Every hospice nurse says
that "Grief is a long valley."
Yeah, but that's not the full quote.
Yeah, well, it's enough for me.
Well, the second part's kind of sweet.
Rue: What is it?
Uh, "A winding valley where every bend...
may reveal a new landscape."
That's not that bad.
Can I read this to you?
Uh, yeah, I'd love that.
Uh...
It's called "Let This Darkness Be a Bell Tower"
by Rainer Maria Rilke.
"Quiet friend who has come so far,
"feel how your breathing makes more space around you.
"Let this darkness be a bell tower and you the bell.
"As you ring, what batters you becomes your strength.
"Move back and forth into the change.
"What is it like, such intensity of pain?
"If the drink is bitter, turn yourself into wine.
"In this uncontainable night,
"be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,
"the meaning discovered there.
"And if the world has ceased to hear you,
"say to the silent earth: I flow.
To the rushing water, speak: I am."
Lexi (narrating): I knew Jade had been doing drugs,
but it wasn't until that day,
at her dad's memorial,
that I realized they were a greater comfort
than I ever could be.
Maybe that's a silly observation,
but I was only 13.
It was the summer before I started ninth grade...
back when we thought we'd all be friends forever.
Move.
Move, move, move!
Lights, four, go.
Lexi: There were five of us.
There was me, Grace...
("Love Will Keep Us Together" by Captain & Tennille playing)
Lexi: My sister, Hallie...
Lexi: Her best friend, Marta...
Lexi: Marta's best friend, Luna.
Lexi: And my best friend, Jade.
Bring out the fucking letters now.
Lexi: And this is life.
Not everyone's life...
But our life!
-Audience Member: Oh, that's fuckin' cool. -(scattered laughs)
Wait, is this fucking play about us?
Rue: For the last few months,
Lexi had been talking to Fezco every day.
But I still don't understand what the play is actually about, though.
Lexi (on phone): It's about friendship.
Well, that's nice. Everybody's gonna love that.
Yeah, I-I mean, I hope so.
I just-- I keep second-guessing myself
and getting anxious, like, if people are gonna think
that it's good or bad,
or if it's gonna upset people or not.
But why would anyone be upset by it?
Lexi: Oh, you know, it's, it's based on real people.
Fezco: Yeah, you really strokin' the bee's nest with that one.
-Am I? -I mean...
if someone invited me to a play, and...
they didn't even tell me I was a character in it?
I'd definitely have some questions.
Lexi: Like, bad questions?
Fezco: Depends on the play.
Lexi: Well, would you be upset by it?
Fezco: It depends on the play.
-Right. -Fezco: And the intentions of the person who made the play.
My intentions are good.
Fezco: Then you ain't got nothin' to worry about.
But... what if they think my intentions aren't good
when in reality they are good?
Well, that's what I call a quandary.
Lexi: What's the answer?
Uh, wait, what was the question again?
: Like, what happens if Cassie sees the play
and thinks I'm being cruel, even though I'm not?
Well, how about you just don't invite her then?
No, she'd get so mad.
Fezco: Even more mad than if she actually saw the play?
That's-- I don't know.
Lexi: Okay, this might kinda be
a weird and embarrassing thing to admit,
but I think the most defining moment of my adolescence
was when my sister went through puberty.
-Uck, I look disgusting. -(audience laughs)
Hey, Hallie, I'm in the middle of somethin'.
It's just this dress is so not flattering.
-Lexi: Hallie, I'm kinda puttin' on a play right now. -Hallie: What?
Lexi: Like, there's an entire audience
waiting for me to continue talking.
-Hallie: Where? -(scattered laughs)
: Right here.
Oh, (chuckles). Hi. Wow.
Whatever. The point is, I couldn't wait
to go through puberty.
Wow, wow, wow!
-(Suze screams) -Mother: Look at you!
-I feel like a big baby. -Hallie...
I've been on this planet for 38 goddamn years,
and I have never seen a baby with knockers like yours.
Hallie: Mom, that was the grossest thing I've ever heard you say.
Mother (laughs): Okay.
Lights, 12, go.
Look, I know being informed, smart, hardworking, and curious
are all very important qualities,
but imagine having all of those qualities and also being hot.
So, if Hallie was 433 days older than me,
then all I would have to do is wait...
433 days, and I'd look just like her.
-(audience laughs) -(cymbals)
-(applause) -(cheering)
-(knocks on door) -Yo, Ash, get the door, man.
Okay, I need you to pull it way back.
You're too broad. It's not funny.
Oh my god. Are you crying?
It's a directorial note. You just take it and move on, okay?
Hey, I need the light cues to be 40% faster,
-and the stagehands to be 20% faster. -Bobbi: Copy that.
Ew! God! What the-- Did someone die in this dress?!
It smells like shit. (gags)
I love the theater.
What we got goin' on?
-Freshly steamed. -Ooh.
Yes, yes, yes.
You da best.
Mmm. Yeah, we steppin' out tonight.
Ooh, bless your heart.
Nah, I really do appreciate you doin' that, though.
Custer: Damn, what's good?
Yo, wassup, man?
Yo, I'm, I'm, actually, a little busy.
I'm, I'm gettin' ready to go out.
We goin' to a party?
Where you goin'?
Don't worry about what I'm doin', man. Worry about yourself.
All right. I'mma just chill then.
