Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt

died last night of complications from prostate cancer.

One of the key figures in pro football, Lamar Hunt was 74.

One late evening while he was in the hospital,

we had a very special time together as a family.

As we solemnly began to file out of the room,

he gave us one last instruction--

"Go, Chiefs."

For Clark Hunt, this was the time to step up.

He was going to have to try to do the job

that his father had been doing.

But Clark had been cognizant not only of Lamar's strengths

but also some of his weaknesses.

One of my goals was to build a team

that could consistently compete for championships,

which is a whole lot easier said than done.

In those 50 years between the Super Bowl championships…

…man, they're just-- they're-- There were moments.

eliminating the Kansas City Chiefs.

And the Bills are going back to the Super Bowl.

Snap is there. It's down.

The Colts are going to the AFC championship game!

The mighty Chiefs have fallen!

The Chiefs will become the first NFL franchise

ever to lose a seventh straight postseason game.

The AFC champion gets the Lamar Hunt Trophy.

Year in and year out,

Lamar Hunt is often on hand to present the trophy in his name

to another team.

From the first year of the Lamar Hunt Trophy

through the end of his life, 2006,

the Kansas City Chiefs never once win it.

But there was never a loss of hope in the Chiefs Kingdom.

I've been going to Chiefs games for 52 years now.

I've been a fan all this time.

I stuck with them for this whole 50 years of highs,

lows-- mostly lows.

You stay loyal no matter what happens.

I get in early

and there's already an extended line at 4:00 in the morning.

I mean, it's like crazy.

There's so much pride here.

It's almost like a high school football team.

It just seems more like when I was playing

at Whitehouse High School in Tyler, Texas.

These fans have grown up going to Chiefs games.

Whether it's preseason or postseason,

the Kingdom shows up packed to the T no matter what the record is.

The history of the Chiefs is very deep.

Fans, they'll be like, "Yeah, we was here

before the Chiefs started getting good."

Whether the organization is doing good or bad,

they stay loyal to it.

In 2012, when the record was 2-14,

everybody was selling out, so I got my tickets.

I've never missed a game in 13 seasons.

Well, you never bail out on your kids.

They might not do well sometimes,

but you just don't give up on them.

You know, the only ground rules are it wouldn't be good

to pick a tie that is of the opponent's colors.

So we try to avoid that. But other than that, she has free will.

- So no blue this week. - No blue this week.

Okay. I think the dragonfly one.

My mom loves them.

So it's kind of like a good omen.

There's nothing like a playoff game at Arrowhead.

The atmosphere that this place creates and these people create…

the intensity is incredible.

You walk in that door and we kick the ball, and it's on.

Soon as I see the stadium,

I get goose bumps all up and down.

It's a lot of history within that stadium,

within the parking lots.

If you talk to a lot of fans, you'll hear that

"My first Kansas City game was with my grandpa.

He brought me here.

Me and my kid, we sat right there."

It's like a generational thing.

You want to see if we can find Taylor yet?

I see her.

Yeah, we got to play washers.

they know how to affect the game.

I believe Arrowhead is the biggest advantage

you can have in the NFL.

The amount of history, the Arrowhead Stadium,

the energy is different in the playoffs.

And you're able to feed off of that energy.
