I once had a big dream

about making a really big Hollywood movie

with a really big budget.

Instead, I had to make this film with only 10 cents.

All right. It wasn't exactly 10 cents,

but we had very little money and no script.

Where's the script?

Nobody got no scripts here.

The seed for this film was planted years ago.

As I gradually got to know my dear friend, Mark Rydell.

One of the most acclaimed film directors of all time.

Having to his credit such films as On Golden Pond,

The Rose, The Cowboys.

We had already booked our flights and condo

and couldn't get a refund.

So we decided to go to Sundance anyway.

What happened to Dick Shawn?

Yeah, he died on stage.

In the middle of his act,

there was like 40 people in the audience

and he lied down the stage,

we thought it was part of the act.

And then he laid down,

Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

Went on too long, and finally a stage manager came out,

he was dead.

My agent called me,

says, "Charlie, you got a meeting at Universal Studios."

I said, "With who?".

And he said a man by the name of Mark Rydell.

Mark's got snapshots of pictures all over the place.

So he said, "Sit down."

I said, " Yeah, what's going on?"

He said, Look I'm getting ready

to do a movie called The River.

I said, "Yeah."

He said, "Yeah."

And it's gonna be with Sissy Spacek and Mel Gibson,

And I said, "Wow!"

I said, "Who is Mel Gibson?"

I'll tell you what,

he sees himself as Francis Coppola.

That's what he sees.

So he thinks if you Francis, you don't need a script.

Well he's full of

How am I gonna make it right for this crew?

This is a man who has done this for years and years.

Fifty years.

And he's brilliant at it.

Yeah, I know he is great.

So he understands what it takes

to do a good important film.

Listen to him.

He knows what he's talking about.

I wrote for Paul Mazursky, both of them died.

I was walking through Washington DC one day,

he grabs his heart.

Then he says he needs Tums or something like that.

But I though he was having a heart attack.

I don't want the guy to die on me.
