Hello.

I am Ummi Abdullah...

I am the writer of 'Malabar Cooking verdict', the first cookbook of Kerala.

The book contains a preface by Sri. Vaikom Muhammed Basheer (He was a prominent writer in Kerala)

I wrote about seven cookbooks in English and Malayalam in addition to 'Malabar Cooking Verdict'

I am very lucky for being the chief judge of many cooking competitions...

and I also got chances to take classes on cooking in many cities across Kerala

As well as...

I have been able to go as cookery consultant and celebrity chef for five star hotles in in the major ciities of South India.

I have got the opportunity...

to give tasty foods to many interpreters...

in the field of Cinema, Art, Literature and Public Sphere.

So far I have just said about myself.

As a good cook...

I'll talk about a dish which was an interesting one for me and Malayalees also.

'Biriyani'

It came from Persia to our country in the Mughal Era, that is, in the 16th century.

The word biriyani means fried and roasted and it was originated from the word 'Biriyan'.

When this biriyani reached in Kerala,

it has undergone several changes in it's form and manifestation...

according to our lands weather conditions and people's nature

Do you know why I'm said so much about Biriyani?

Because, I have to tell a story about Biriyani.

The story of Biriyani which brought the angels in to our land!

This is a very complicated case...

not necessarily be a case like before.

Now I'm at Velappanchavadi village about 50 km away from Kozhikode.

There are four hills, one river and ofcourse there are living many good people.

This village became popular by the greatness of this Mosque.

'Oonnu Vadi Mosque'

There is a fascinating story behind this interesting name..

It was about 200 years ago!

The expenses and space for building this mosque was given by Moulavi.

His full name was 'Abu Musliar Muhammed Moulavi'

Before he dies...

he donated his walking stick to this mosque.

This walking stick is about 300 years old and it has 8 precious gems on it.

It is believed that, this walking stick is the luckiest thing for the well being of the Mosque and village.

But...

This Mosque became famous not just because of this walking stick or even the gems on it.

Every sunday there conducting a 'Biriyani Nercha'...

That meal program is the real reason for the popularity of this Mosque.

This week's episode is about the taste of Biryani giving as Nercha in this Velappan Chavadi.

I was the former Headmaster of the Velappan Chavadi Higher Secondary School,

which is the only high school in this village.

And not only that,

I am the president of Kariyathankavu Bhadrakali Temple.

This Kariyathankavu Bhadrakali Temple is about 2000 years old.

How long back this Biriyani Nercha started here?

I think that was in the year of ninteen ninety seven

- Ninety three...Ninety four... - Ninety Seven?

-Ninety seven? - Yes.. yes.

- Ninety Eight! - Yes! yes!

In the year 1998 it started here first time.

I am the first guy who seated in the first round of Briyani Nercha on its' begining day.

Oh!

Till now, I never missed this Biriyani Nercha.

Brother...

Could you elaborate the history behind this 'Biriyani Nercha' to the viewers of our channel.

Sri. Hajyar started this meal program as Nercha and that was according to his wife's prayer.

- Then, who is Hajyar? - Yeah, I coming to that. His full name is Mayeenkutty Hajyar!

He is also like me...very famous public figure in this village!

He loves everybody, we all respect him very much.

When it begins, there was only nearly 20 people.

Later, The crowd was increasing...

people came from different places?

What is the reason for this much crowd?

Taste of Biriyani!

Everyone in this village take part in this meal program without any discrimination of caste and race.

Sir, you know, there is so many cows in this Hajyar's house.

Then?

Only the milkman was left there after he sold all those cows...

So, he started to cooking and serving of foods.

At that time he cooked Biriyani and it was good in taste!

That's why Hajiyar arranged to make the Biryani here and not only that...

Yes... yes... yes!

There is no Biriyani in this world is tastier than he cooks.

That will tell anybody in this village.
