SubDL — a free OpenSubtitles alternative
OpenSubtitles has been the default subtitle site since 2006, and it is still the largest. SubDL is the alternative people pick when they want to download without an account, without a daily quota, and without a VIP tier gating speed — with a free API that media players can build on. This page is a side-by-side, not a sales pitch: where OpenSubtitles is ahead, it says so.

The honest summary
OpenSubtitles reaches more media players today. Subtitle totals are not directly comparable because services count bundles and season packs differently; the reliable comparison is whether the language and release you need exist for a particular title.
SubDL is the better fit if you want to download without signing in, if you have hit OpenSubtitles' daily download limit, if you want a free API key in one click, or if you are looking for something that was on Subscene — SubDL mirrors that archive and OpenSubtitles does not.
Downloading without an account
SubDL does not ask you to register to search or to download a subtitle file, and there is no daily download counter on ordinary use. OpenSubtitles meters downloads per day and raises the limit for VIP accounts.
That difference matters most on a TV binge, where one evening can be a dozen episode files.
For developers and player plugins
Both sites have a REST API. SubDL's is free to use with a key you can create yourself from the user panel, and the Bazarr provider ships in Bazarr itself. OpenSubtitles offers paid API tiers alongside a free one, and is present in more players today — Kodi, Jellyfin, VLC, Emby and others.
If you maintain a player or a subtitle tool and want a provider with no per-tier pricing to reason about, the SubDL API is documented at /api-doc and free keys are instant.
The Subscene archive
Subscene shut down in May 2024 and its 20 years of community uploads went offline with it. SubDL preserved and mirrored that archive, so subtitles that were originally published on Subscene are searchable here. OpenSubtitles has its own history and its own community, but it is not a Subscene mirror.

Frequently asked questions
Is SubDL a good OpenSubtitles alternative?
For most people, yes: SubDL lets you search and download subtitles without an account and without a daily quota, and it has a free API. OpenSubtitles still publishes more files per day and works in more media players, so it is worth checking there for very obscure titles.
Do I need an account to download from SubDL?
No. Searching and downloading are free and do not require registration. An account is only needed to upload subtitles, to use the API, or to subscribe to a Pro plan.
Does SubDL have a download limit like OpenSubtitles?
No daily download counter applies to ordinary browsing on SubDL. API usage does have per-plan limits, which are documented on the developers page.
Can I use SubDL with Bazarr instead of OpenSubtitles?
Yes. SubDL ships as a subtitle provider inside Bazarr — add it in Bazarr's provider settings with a free SubDL API key. You can run both providers at once; Bazarr will use whichever has a match.
Which one has more subtitles?
The published totals are not directly comparable because subtitle services count season packs and bundled files differently. SubDL has 6,000,000+ individual subtitle files across 90+ languages, counting every file inside a season pack individually. Check the title and release you need on both services.
Is SubDL free?
Yes. Search and download are free. Optional Pro plans add AI subtitle translation and higher API limits.
