Hello, dear friends

this is Erik T. Vogel from New York

and the occasion of my broadcast today

is the 25th anniversary of a record company that

deals exclusively with the production of jazz

I have here with me in my studio

the two owners of the company

Mr. Alfred Lion

and Mr. Francis Wolff

and what made you decide to have the unusual idea

of forming a record company yourselves

First of all, a great love for jazz music, of course

was one of the reasons why

I started making records for myself

The records I wanted weren't sold in every store

It was a special kind of record

that I only found out later

what the records were called

and they only existed in Harlem

in the negro district of New York

Francis Wolff grew up in his parents' house

together with his two siblings Henry and Eva

in today's klingelhöferstrasse

My father and Francis...

Knew eachother at least in 1934

They were jazz enthusiasts

had a huge record collection even then

and they met once a week...

sometimes on a nightly basis

first of all in an apartment on Uhlandstrasse...

I assume...

called itself the melody club

and one of the members always had to see to it...

that a program was running

that is, they presented their records

39 in October...

immigrated to New York on a steamer
