Some pretty extreme poltergeist activity at their home

My father said this was one of the most intense hauntings

He had ever experienced

And it went way beyond poltergeist activity.

Yeah, it wasn't just objects moving around,

At night swarms of bugs would come into their room

While they slept.

Andy's father, howard, would experience them

Hitting him in the face.

When he woke up and turned on the lights...

The whole floor was littered with dead bugs.

That wasn't all.

Right in front of their eyes,

These letters would appear out of thin air.

These all just appeared?

Yeah, that's not the half of it.

There are hundreds of them.

These are bizarre.

This looks like child's handwriting.

I mean, we sure this wasn't just andy pulling

Yeah, that's what my father thought at first.

But howard claims that he witnessed this

While in the room with andy.

What about andy's mother?

Well, her name was johnnie.

She was ill and was living with her sister

About 75 miles away

During most of the three years that this was going on.

Finally the family couldn't take it anymore

And they moved out, and my father thought it was over.

But apparently it didn't stop.

By andy's sister, amy, in 1973.

"my brother, andy, is now 20 years old and is convinced

That he is possessed by the devil.

More recently he has been unable to control his thoughts

Or concentrate on anything,

And he insists that the devil talks to him constantly."

This thing followed them.

This is eerily similar to a woman in missouri

That's been reaching out to me recently.

She and her kids are terrified,

They feel like they have some kind of demonic attachment.

Andy's story is just a grim reminder

Of how bad these things can get.

And I haven't even told you the worst part.

A few years after amy wrote the letter to hans,

Andy committed suicide.

I spoke to amy.

It's really difficult for her to talk about it

Even 40 years later.

Does anybody live there now?

The house has been empty for nearly a decade.

That there was absolutely no hope for him.

That the devil was going to torture him

For the rest of his life,

And so he might as well end his life.

He'd shot himself through the temple.

He just wanted to die.

In many cases of possession

It will often start with the spirits

Communicating in ways like letters or telephone calls

And then the progression is...

"we don't need to talk on the phone anymore.

I can talk to you right in your head if you just let me in."

The ultimate goal in a possession

Is to break you.

Well, it worked.

Whatever this thing was, this darkness that latched on

To amy's brother, andy, all those years ago,

The damage it did, it's still felt to this day.
