jessica: We had a nice new house.
I loved being there. It felt like the american dream.
Crystal: It was this big two story farmhouse.
You got the chills just looking at it.
There was this thing in my room, and it was staring at me.
Something uninvited was in our house.
Something shoved me.
I was being physically attacked.
He pointed down the hallway and said,
"it's not scary like that man."
this thing is targeting my children.
crystal: It literally felt like my leg was on fire.
It was spelling words.
If something could do that, what else could it do?
Lori: We walk into the house. It felt like home.
Erin: I met this really lovely girl.
Jessica: My daughter was going to share her birthday.
Man #1: And there were a billion stars out, just gorgeous.
- The room got cold. - Something's not right.
Oscar: I know what waits for me in the dark.
Lori: We weren't alone in this house.
Erin: I saw somebody staring right at me.
Lori: Blood coming out of his eyes.
Man #1: We're under the control of something.
April: I felt like I was dying.
Maddox: she wouldn't wake up,
and she wouldn't respond to me, and her little body was cold.
John: It was pure evil.
people need to know that they're never really alone in the dark.
jessica: In 2005 my husband worked for a transportation company.
he had a job transfer up to the twin cities,
so we moved to minneapolis to accommodate his new job.
It was me, my husband, landon, and our 2-year-old son logan.
I was pregnant and due with another one in a month.
it took us a while, but we ended up finding the house
just four blocks away from my parents' house.
A lot of families with little kids,
cute little houses, well maintained yards.
It felt like the american dream.
The front yard was huge,
so there was a lot of space for logan and I
and his little sister who was coming to run around
and play in.
The day that we were going to go sign the paperwork
to take possession of the home, my water broke.
I wasn't due for another two weeks.
They came to me in the hospital room
while I was in labor and we signed everything.
Ella was born about 20 minutes later.
I thought it was kind of cool that my daughter
was going to share the birthday of our family
moving into this house.
we had accumulated a lot of hand-me-down furniture
from our family members.
We were still young and just kind of starting out,
so we would take furniture from anyone who would give it to us.
the first night in that house, I was a little restless.
I had had a c-section,
so I wasn't able to physically do a whole lot.
I was so tired. I wasn't able to fall asleep.
I was tossing and turning a little bit.
I saw a shadow standing in the window.
The shadow was tall, it had a very distinct shape
of being a man, the head, shoulders, and torso,
and it was very dark. You couldn't see through it.
It was a deep, dark, blackness.
I hadn't met any of our neighbors.
I didn't know if we'd moved next to someone creepy
who would be looking through my back window.
Then I realized,
we're on the second floor.
it wouldn't be possible for someone
to be standing in my window.
When I looked at it more closely,
I realized the dark denseness
extended all the way down to the floor.
It was actually inside.
growing up, there's five of us.
It was my dad, my mom, and my sister and my brother.
I'm the oldest.
When I was around 14, we moved to hickory, virginia,
into this big two story farm house.
it was what you would think an old rundown farm house
would look like.
it was painted, but the paint was chipping off at that point.
My dad was really excited,
but I got the chills just looking at it.
I didn't want to go in it.
going in there, I wasn't comfortable at all.
it just had a really weird vibe.
a couple days later,
my mom and I are upstairs on the second floor...
...Painting my brother's room.
we had newspaper laid down
because everything was pretty much carpet in the house.
we heard somebody walking up the stairs.
We thought it was my dad,
so we both went over to the banister.
My mom hollered, "hey, steve, is that you?"
nobody answered her. No one was there.
Okay, well that's kind of creepy.
and then we heard something walking across the newspapers
in my brother's room. It freaked me and my mom out.
one night a couple of days after,
I was upstairs in my room.
I heard my mom scream.
I came downstairs.
She was crying at that point.
I asked her, "what is wrong?"
she said that her recliner
started shaking her.
when she screamed, "stop it!" it just abruptly stopped.
I didn't know what was happening,
but if something could do that...
What else could it do?
that night...
...I had a dream...
...I was living on this farm
and there was a man, his name was george.
he chased me.
there was nobody else around that could help me.
and he started to choke me.
there was this thing in my room, and it was staring at me.
my mind was trying to come up
with a logical explanation for what this was.
it just stood perfectly still like it was looking at me.
My heartbeat quickened.
I knew it wasn't a person
and I didn't think it was my eyes playing tricks on me.
I laid there for a while and looked at it,
and I decided I would get closer to it.
I wanted to touch it so I knew that it was real.
it was not a solid mass of any kind that I could feel.
It was noticeably colder than the rest of the room.
I backed away from it with my eyes still on it,
watching it until I got into bed.
I didn't want to wake my husband up
because I didn't want to scare him
and I thought he might think I was crazy.
I closed my eyes and I told it
to go away in the name of the lord.
When I opened him up, it was gone.
I don't think I slept very well that night.
I knew without a doubt that I'd seen something
or someone standing in my bedroom.
I tried to convince myself that I had imagined it,
but this encounter had gone on for several minutes,
but I still felt really optimistic and happy
that we had a nice new house. It was just beautiful.
I loved being there.
Other than in the laundry room.
the laundry room was in a section of the house
on the main level that wasn't finished.
That space was actually right beneath our bedroom.
We had stored a bunch of furniture there.
this space was filled with boxes that we hadn't unpacked,
an old dresser that we weren't using at the time,
my husband's gun safe, and a refrigerator.
There was really no reason for it to feel creepy...
...But it always did.
I'd walk in there, and I would feel like somebody
was watching me.
I wanted to be more hands on with the kids,
and I decided that I would stay home once we moved.
I've always enjoyed writing.
I decided it might be a good time to try my hand at it.
