De eerste 200 regels.

On the 26th of November 1983 six robbers broke into the Brink's-Mat

warehouse in London, intending to steal one million pounds

in used Spanish pesetas.

Instead, they found three tonnes of solid gold bars

outside the vault.

Most of this gold has never been recovered

and its fate has become part of urban legend.

The same legend that says there was a

seventh gang member who escaped justice.

The myth surrounding the seventh man continues to attract media interest,

including attention from documentary filmmakers.

Introduce yourself. I'm ex-detective Steve Adams.

Ex-detective. I recently took early retirement.

Did you work on the Goodwin case? The seventh man? Yes. Yes, I did.

Can you tell us about that? Well, that's why I'm here.

Let's start with why he's referred to as the seventh man.

In 1983, Goodwin was part of a gang that stole 23 million in gold bars from the.

Brink's-Mat depot. I mean, everyone must have heard about that. They've even made

films about it. At the time, the police were searching for six robbers, not

seven. And Goodwin was the seventh. So, he

escaped justice. If taking a share of 23 million pounds

and living the high life in Spain for 40 years qualifies as escaping justice,

then yeah, I'd say so. I'm sure that's how he intended it to stay. Uh, but it

just didn't work out that way. Jim Goodwin's life for the last 40 years had

been designed to keep him unnoticed and under the radar. He had become adept at

hiding in plain sight. The only routine he allowed himself was to rise late and

enjoy the sun.

Maybe he'd take a stroll down to the old Spanish town he called home.

And every few weeks, he might make his way to a particular favourite Spanish bar

where he would collect his English newspapers. This was his life.

But things were going to change for Goodwin. Before the day ended, he'd be

forced to come out of hiding, and his life would never be the same again.

Mr. George! How are you? I'm good, thanks. Nice to see you, Pedro.

You're welcome. Your usual table.

Thank you.

That's for you.

Uncle needs to speak to Auntie.

When was this?

Weeks ago.

Hello, Fox and Co.

Hello? Fox and Co, how can I help you?

Hello?

Clive?

Jim, it's you. I forgot about this code thing.

I thought it was a sex pest.

Get that a lot, do you?

There must be a better way to do this. You have heard of the internet?

Never mind that, bollocks. I read your message.

Jesus, Jim, that was over a week ago.

And I'm calling. What's up?

I'm sorry to land this on you. But.

It's Danny.

Danny?

What about Danny?

Clive, tell me, for God's sake.

They think it was a break-in that went wrong.

I put the message in the paper that day.

Is he hurt?

He's gone.

Your brother's dead. I'm sorry.

A break in?

Why would anyone want to kill Danny?

He wouldn't hurt a fly.

The police are all over it.

There's an autopsy.

Then when the body is released

your niece will announce the funeral details.

Stacey? We both have to stay away from her.

We can't go anywhere near her.

Or the family.

Someone could use her to get to me.

Look relax. I've not been near her.

I'm following her on socials.

Socials?

The internet. Jim.

Please join us in the new millennium, will you?

Jim?

Sorry, I didn't mean to.

Send her some money.

Make sure she's okay.

And she can give Danny a good send-off.

Well, maybe she just needs her family around

her at the moment. And sending her money

may attract the sort of attention you want to avoid.

Anyway, money can't fix everything.

Sort it, Clive. Just sort it.

Bloody hell.

For the amount of ยฃ25,000.

Please find attached a

cheque for the same amount.

Okay.

Leave it with me, I'll try and think of something.

You know I always do.

Jim?

My pleasure entirely.

What Goodwin didn't realise at that time was that while he had successfully

avoided interest from the police, there were other parties interested in him.

And these were people that he should potentially fear even more.

I have to go.

This is my work.

I'm a treasure hunter.

You think I'm crazy, don't you?

There's treasure out there.

If you know where to find it.

Like the gold in the picture.

Yes. These guys.

They took that gold.

It was just lying there, and they took it.

I mean, who deserves

that type of luck?

And hardly any has been recovered.

But I'll find it.

Research.

That's the key.

I know more about those involved than

they know about themselves.

The man in the picture.

Is he...?

Dead!

More dead than he'll ever be.

About a month ago, I had a breakthrough.

The police and all these other so-called

experts, they've always said there was.

Six robbers. But I knew

there was a seventh.

And this is him.

Goodwin!

And he took that gold

and he just vanished.

Like a puff of smoke.

Just left his whole family.

Even his fiancรฉe.

Did you... kill him?

He has a brother.

Danny.

But he's very cautious.

And if that doesn't pull him out

he has a niece, too.

And now we have a problem, don't we?

Such a shame.

I'm just a working girl.

I won't say nothing to no one.

No!

Double negatives freak me out.

Thank you. Bye.

We found her body in his flat.

We've got witnesses who saw them

leaving the club together.

All I'm saying, Steve, is that we need

to keep all lines of inquiry open.

It's the same man. I know it.

Pedro?

Yes, Mr. George?

Have you got one of those computers?

. Can I borrow it?

I'm looking for... em... socials.

Twitter? Facebook?

Facebook?

Thank you.

"Funeral to take place on the"

24th of August at twelve noon.

God bless you, Danny boy.

Sorry, I can't be there.

"To be buried in the..."

"Family grave!"

Stacey, what are you doing to me!

Thank you all for coming, and I would

like to ask Deputy Assistant Commissioner David Powis to outline our.

Investigation so far.

On the 26th of November at approximately

6:40 a.m., six armed robbers broke into

the Brink's-Mat warehouse at the Heathrow International Trading Estate in London,

stealing 26 million pounds worth of gold bullion.

We're appealing for information relating to two vans used in that raid.

One was a Commer box van, and the other a Ford Transit.

The number plates of one of the vans were believed to contain the letters X KS.

Or YKS.

Pedro?

Have you got that item for me?

I think I need it sooner than I thought.

So, that was when Goodwin returned to the U.K?

Yes. He was intent on recovering a portion

of gold that he'd buried in a family grave.

And he needed to do it before his brother

was buried.

He knew once the gold was found

the connection to him as the 7th man

would be complete, and it would just be

a matter of time before he was arrested.

But his problems were piling up.

He was unaware that someone from

his past had recognised him.

So, things were looking bleak for Goodwin

at that time.

Good morning. I am Father Doyle

from St. Michael's Church.

I've come to show my respects.

I'm doing the eulogy for your father.

Oh, okay. Come in.

I understand that your father had a brother.
