I'm a genuine solo camper who loves nature and solitude.

Solo camping alone is the best!

I have some self-awareness too!

I figured I was disturbing his precious alone time.

If anything, I want you to keep going camping with him.

Gen is a super late bloomer.

He's the type of guy who gives in easily.

Whoa!

Why am I thinking about her?

I see now.

I wanted to make Shizuku into a full-on solo camper.

I'll finally teach you the basics of starting fires.

She better be ready.

Episode 7

Not bad.

Let's get to it right away.

There's a theme for today's camping trip

and that's me showing you the ropes of starting a fire!

Yes, master!

It's not like it's a particularly difficult process.

Basically, it boils down to learning the theory and putting it into practice.

This campsite allows direct open fires.

So first, I'll show you how direct--

Master!

What?

Actually...

I got myself an open fire stand!

If possible, could you give me a lesson on the basics of how to make a fire in a stand

instead of a direct fire?

So you got yourself some new equipment and want to use it immediately, huh?

Yes.

That feeling is...

...totally relatable to me!

Set it up right now, then!

Okay!

Ta-da!

This is my first-ever open fire stand!

Pretty solid, I guess.

Also, look at it from its side.

See?

It has a heart shape.

So cute!

I can't get enough of this decorative vibe!

Isn't it ultra cute?

Sure.

Not like I know.

Let me ask you just in case.

Do you have any prior experience of starting fires?

I'm ashamed to admit it, but no, I don't.

But I've been preparing by watching YouTube videos.

In that case, give it a try on your own for the time being.

What?!

Weren't you gonna teach me the basics of open fires today?

I can give you advice and warnings.

But I won't give you a hand.

Don't act spoiled, don't give up halfway.

and do the things you can yourself.

That's what it means to be a solo camper.

Yes!

In most cases, you can purchase firewood at the campsite.

Generally speaking, the price for one bundle these days is between 500 to 800 yen.

Having experienced camping a few times now,

there are some things I've learned.

"Take it easy until you get familiar with it."

So Kusano Shizuku will be using a firelighter!

Oh? Surprisingly easier than I thought.

Hm?

It went out.

What could possibly have gone wrong?

Oh, wait...

I did put in thin firewood like I'm supposed to do.

Now then, let's try again.

Alright, here we go!

And again!

This time it'll work for sure!

I ran out of firelighter.

Pretty "close".

Master!

You're eating something already!

You were taking too long, so I got all hungry.

You think you were using thin firewood,

but that's still too thick.

Still, if you'd use a lot of firelighters, it probably would have kept the fire going,

but with that way, the fire'd be missing an overwhelming amount of heat inside.

So it means it doesn't have enough oomph to go on?

The key to making a fire is that the firewood gets enough stored heat so it can ignite.

Once you light the fire, the first stage is evaporating the moisture in the firewood.

First stage

Once the moisture evaporates

and the firewood reaches 200 degrees Celsius,

pyrolysis starts.

Once it reaches about 250 degrees,

it rapidly starts releasing flammable gases.

And that's called

flash point, second stage of wood burning.

For the wood to be properly burning,

it needs to be taken to the point of ignition,

Ignition point

In summary, you should create an environment for the fire that makes it easy to accumulate heat.

I see.

What I mean is, you should use thinner firewood.

You could make it thinner with a knife or an axe,

but looks like you used up all your firelighter.

For now, just go to the forest and pick up some nice kindling.

Start by picking up thin twigs that are well-dried.

After that, pick up some dry cedar leaves.

These leaves have a lot of oil content, so they burn easily,

and can serve as a replacement for firelighter.

Master!

I gathered some nice ones.

This many should do, right?

This amount should do as the kindling we need.

If I fail, I'm just gonna have to try again!

Well, failure is also part of the learning experience.

There's no greater luxury than enjoying failure.

You're right.

Feel free to fail as many times as you'd like.

And should you hit your limit,

I'll be here to help you.

Even if this is solo camping...

...it's our solo camping.

Yes!

Anyway, think back on your past failures and have a go at it again.

- Will do! - Okay.

First, place the dry cedar leaves which serve as the firelighter.

And then place the twigs in a cross-legged pattern so the air can get in.

Just because the fire's burning doesn't mean you should get impatient now.
