I have killed Musailamah the liar!

I have killed Musailamah the liar.

With you I killed the best of men, Hamzah Ibn Abd Al-Muttalib;

and with you I killed the worst man, Musailamah.

Will I now be able to walk among people like one of them,

without thinking that they whisper to one another: 'this is Hamzah's killer'?

We were let down first by the Bedouins.

They got us on the retreat, leading us to do what we are not good at.

Then Khalid ordered that each group should be clearly distinguished,

fighting under their own flag.

This meant that people were too shy to flee.

This led to the achievement of victory; all praise be to God.

I bear witness,

that Khalid kept moving forward, seeking martyrdom most determinedly

and he remained steadfast until victory.

We had to appeal to him saying: 'You are the commander, Khalid.

You should not be so forward and close to the enemy.

If you were to be killed, the army will weaken.' He said:

'I know what you are saying, but I cannot hold back

and I fear that we will be defeated.'

Had martyrdom been closer to the one who is most forward and closest to the enemy,

Khalid would have been the first martyr.

What has your uncle, Zaid Ibn Al-Khattab, done?

He sought martyrdom and God blessed him with it.

Zaid is killed while you are alive! Shouldn't you be ashamed of yourself?

He prayed for martyrdom and he was granted that.

I tried hard to have it, but I was denied it.

May God bestow His grace on Zaid Ibn Al-Khattab.

He has been ahead of me in the best two things:

belief in Islam and martyrdom.

He fought very hard and killed many enemy soldiers.

He also killed Al-Rajjal Ibn Anfawah, Musailamah's army commander.

By God, I will never forget him.

And I hope to meet him at God's messenger's

basin in the life to come, God willing.

He was one of the kindest...

and most sincere of people.

He always gave me preference over himself, ever since we were young.

I was hard,

but he was gentle.

Peace be upon you.

Martyred in Yamamah?

Are you crying, Abu Jandal,

when God has willed to grace your brother with martyrdom?

He is now with a company better than ours and in a life better than this one.

We should weep for ourselves

as we do not know what God will do with us in what remains of our lives.

But, father, we know what we should be doing.

He was always in the forefront, supporting the truth.

When he believed in something, he would act on it, caring little for the consequences.

He was quick to act on what he knew.

Why should we stay here in Makkah, father,

when all these campaigns of jihad are setting out of Madinah by the Caliph's orders.

I have resolved to stay there,

until the Caliph sends me in a campaign wherever he wishes.

I may thus join my brother.

I will follow your suit, Abu Jandal.

I will follow your suit and the suit of Abdullah, my son.

May God bestow His grace on him.

At last!

I have always said: "it is high time for him to be free of his father's chains.

Indeed.

At last, I am now free of my father's chains.

Abu Bakr! Many of those who knew the Qur'an by heart were killed in Al-Yamamah.

I fear that this will continue in forthcoming battles.

I feel that you should give an order that the Qur'an should be collected

in one complete copy,

so that it does not remain in various portions in scrolls, on bones,

tree branches and in people's memories.

How am I to do something that was not done by God's messenger?

It is certainly good.

God has undertaken to keep it intact.

A part of this is that He will facilitate the means to ensure its preservation

and guide His servants to take the necessary steps.

I have thought long on this,

ever since we heard of the death of our friends at Yamamah,

and now I am all for it.

Yes, by God; it is good. Go ahead and do it, Abu Bakr.

It is a good idea.

It should make it easier to keep intact.

To whom shall we entrust the task of collecting it?

Zaid Ibn Thabit. He is a trustworthy young man with good sense.

He used to write the Qur'an when it was revealed.

Peace be to you, Ibn Al-Khattab.

Peace be to you both.

How are you now with Islam, Uyaynah?

I am a Muslim, by the grace of God. That affair is over, Umar.

How about your old crony? - You mean Tulaihah Al-Asadi?

I heard that he has settled with the Kalb tribe, and that he reverted to Islam.

Has he abandoned soothsaying?

That was a means to an end which he did not achieve.

Then he was forced to acknowledge the truth, as I was.

Well, what is up now?

We would like you to witness this, as Abu Bakr has ordered.

What is this?

I and my friend, Al-Aqra' Ibn Habis, came to the Caliph and said:

'We have a barren piece of land that has neither grass nor any benefit.

If you wish you could give it to us

and we may be able to till it and grow some plants in it.

Perhaps God may make it useful.

He consulted those who were with him and they advised him to do so.

He wrote us this document and those present witnessed it.

He said, however, it is not valid unless Umar witnesses it.

He asked us to come to you for that. Here we are.

Has he done so, now? Let me have a look.

Why are you doing this, Ibn Al-Khattab? It is the Caliph's document.

Hasn't he said that it is not valid without me witnessing it?

By God, I do not accept. Go back.

What have you done for Islam to deserve to be rewarded with a large piece of land

to be your private property?

Don't you know that God's messenger gave us some of the spoils of war

after the Battle of Hunain?

God's messenger wanted to win your hearts over when Islam was still weak.

Now Islam is strong by God's grace. Go away and do your best.

May God abandon you unless you do.

You are of the type who are scarce when the going is rough,

but in the forefront when rewards are available.

You are certainly hard and rough. We will complain to the Caliph.

Who is the Caliph, you or Umar?

He, had he wished and accepted.

Tell me about this land that you gave to these two:

is it your own property or the public property of the Muslims?

It is public property.

Who gave you the right to assign it to these two,

to the exclusion of the Muslim community?

I consulted those around me and they advised me to do so.

Have you then consulted all Muslims and ensured they were happy with it?

They all are the owners of this land.

I told you before that you are better able to undertake this than me,

but you forced me to accept the responsibility.

I praise God that I did, giving it to one who is better than me.

He is the best person after God's messenger, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq.

This letter comes from Al-Muthanna Ibn Harithah

whose prowess in war we all know as he fought alongside Al-Alaa' Ibn Al-Hadrami

against the apostates of Bahrain. He comes from that area.

When the war against the apostates there was over, he did not stop.

He led his people chasing the Persians who helped the apostates.

He fought them and went deep into their territories until he reached the two rivers:

Tigris and the Euphrates.

He established his presence at the borders of Iraq,

so that we won't be attacked by the Persians and their allies, the Arabs of Iraq.

He did all this at his own initiative. In his letter, he says

that if he is appointed as governor of his people

and those of the adjacent areas of Persia, he will take care of that side.

What do you think?

Al-Muthanna himself is one of the best people, as far as we know.

He is not an ordinary person of unknown ancestry.

I do not think that he has requested the position for any worldly gain for himself.

He is, after all, the chief of his people.

However, he wants his authority to be enhanced by the Caliph's endorsement.

He will then be able to call on people to fight with him on this condition.

He will also be able to seek reinforcements from you against our common enemy.

The Persians would not leave him alone to do what he is doing near the borders of Iraq.

They, however, are preoccupied with the chaos in their own kingdom.

As we have heard.

If the danger represented by Al-Muthanna increases,

and if they fear the loss of their land next to Al-Heerah,

they would raise an army against him. He is no match for them.

With the Persians we cannot rely on raids and skirmishes.

We must raise against them armies to fight them in their own territories

over the land under their control,

until God fulfils His promise to His messenger (peace be upon him).

Yes, Caliph. This is indeed the right view and the right time.

The whole of Arabia is now subject to the rule of Islam.

Our soldiers have gained great expertise in warfare,

which was totally unknown to the Arabs before Islam.

If the Arabs set out to fight the Persians, their bonds will strengthen

and, with God's help, they become like a solid building.

They will forget their old grievances and vengeance killings.

If we are to go ahead, then this is the appropriate time.

When you receive this letter of mine,

march to Iraq so as to enter from its south-west, starting with Al-Ubullah.

Try to win its people over, calling on them to believe in God.

If they do not respond, then take the jizyah from them to acknowledge your authority.
