"Kanu Kayen's son Gopinath.. Has a penchant for singing."
Dije Uncle, - Hey!
Look atthis - What isthat?
Tanpura... formymusic.
What music?
Music of the maestro... Great Goopynath.
A farmer you are... A maestro I become.
Come fiver, come to my hand!
It's going to be a fiver... it's going to be... a fiver... fiver...
My goodness! You?
I salute you lords.
Looks like the second Pandava with his club!
What's this?
Let us see.
Greatl.
A great thingto have.
What price it is?
Well... Gosain uncle of Panchpur... it belongs to him only.
- Pallab Gosain? - Yes Sirs.
But he is a maestro. That he is!
Eveymorning he's busypractising his lessons...
and well, I havethat penchant, too...
for the lastfewdays, I've been keenlyfollowing his lessons...
I saw that he has two tanpuras... one for his
use... and the other lies idle in the corner.
Todayl managedto ask him ifhewould give methat one... one he doesn't use...
he said, "Good God! That one is doomed."
But I said it could serve mypurpose.
Then he said, "Why will I give it away for free?"
I said I was just a poor shopkeeper; Where would I get the money?
He said, "Do my work." I asked what kind of work.
He asked me to blend the tobacco in the hookah for him, and I did.
Asked me to massage his feet, and I also did that.
Then he asked me to draw water from the well. I did.
"Kill the rats in the storeroom," he said, and I did.
Such huge rats, you won't believe. One blow with the bamboo stick and they...
Oh, it's alright!
And so he gave you this. Yes Sirs.
Pulled the ears himself, and handed it to me. Even now my ears hurt.
What do you say? Your ears?
Both my ear and this fellow's.
He said, "Music lies both in your and your instrument's
ears. When you pull them both, they create harmony!"
Oh, harmony! Absolutely right!
Do one thing, boy... sing a number for us.
Let's test both the instrument and its owner.
Sing, shall I? Of course you must.
But I know only one song, my lords. Sing that one only.
No need to sing something heavy.
Well, actually... it's a song of the dawn, but dawn seems to be over now.
Of course it's still there. Dawn doesn't run away like that. You start.
The shadow of this stick... as long as it doesn't
touch that stone... dawn is still there.
You sing.
- So, shall I? - Yes, sure.
Keep a watch on that shadow, my lords. Oh sure.
I become lost in my song. Don't you worry. Just sing.
Behold!
With eyes wide open.
The beauty of this wor...
But Dawn is overl.
The time was too short! If I had a few more minutes, I could have sung the whole song.
Look here Gopinath.
You do one thing.
- Our Raja... - The King, you know.
He's a connoisseur of music.
Very patronising!
You go and sing your song in front of him.
Oh what are you telling me, my lords? Why will they allow me inside the palace?
But, why do you need to enter?
Your song will enter.
And enter it will... right into the King's ears!
Straight through the ears, The heart it will pierce
if only you would suggest how it's going to be possible.
The King is an early riser.
Be there right before daybreak(coughs)... Beside
the wall you will find a broken... ...
A broken temple.
Sitting there and facing the palace...
Just start crooning...
and see what happens next.
But what might happen, mylords?
Listen. When the King asks your name, tell him your name is Gopinath Gayen.
Gayen!
He that sings Is called a'Gayen'
Gayen!
You said I sing out of tune, but the babus of the village
praised me a lot. I performed before them. They were telling...
What were they telling?
Nothing.
Did God stuff enough grey matter in your head
that you would understand their mockery?
This poor father's simple words were not enough
for you; You went for the opinion of those babus!
So excited you are about their 'praises' that
you didn't even care to do some housework!
What do you think of yourself? Off to the shop, right now!
If I even hear the word 'music' from tomorrow,
I'll smash that tanpura to pieces! Wild beast!
Behold!
Behold!
Behold With eyes wide open.
The beauty of this world.
The beauty of this world!
The beauty of this world!
Darkness fades As Dawn unfurls.
Guard!
Guard, my foot!
Yes Sir?
Whoever is yelling outside, bring him inside! - Okay Sir.
Go!
Come on, let's go - Where?
To the palace
lnside the palace? Yes, absolutely.
Did the King call me? Oh yes, he did.
Did he hear my song? Oh yes, he heard.
What did he say? He said a lot.
Name?
My name?
The King is asking your name, tell him. Yes, tell him, tell him.
My name is Sri Gopinath Gayen.
Gayen... Gayen.
Gopinath Gayen.
Why were you yelling?
Why were you yelling? Why? Why? Why? Why?
Well, I didn't really yell... Sir.
I just sang the morning Raaga.
Here's my tanpura.
Show it.
Show it, show it.
Got it from Gosain uncle of Pashpukur.
Do you know the octave?
Well... - The seven notes of music. Do you know the seven notes?
Yes Sir.
What is the third note?
Ga!
Sixth note?
Dha.
Put together, what do they mean?
Put together...
Put him on a donkey and throw him out of this village!
On the orders of the King...
Gopinath Gayen is being ousted from this Amlaki village.
Third note and sixth one.
Third note and sixth one.
Goopy walks the long road.
The long road!
Where are you off to?
On and on and on The road just goes on.
Goopy is on a high Only a little worry by the by.
After dark, in the woods If the tiger comes.
And hunts Goopy down.
Oh God! My back aches! Halt halt.
Go! Go back to Amlaki.
Go, go.
- Who there? - Oh my God!
- Shut up! - Shut up!
Beware! .Bewarel.
Hey you!
Look at your drum! It's bloated with water!
