And the adrenaline running into a fire

or a burning building... it's a life-or-death situation.

You really have to be on point

and use that adrenaline to your advantage.

And that is really what drives you to do good.

You want to be in that situation,

and honestly, when the calls come in,

I want to be the person you call.

But that's

the exciting part. It's the unknown.

Like, what am I gonna do when I get out there?

You honestly will never know

what's gonna come out of my mouth.

The lack of filter... it gets me in trouble sometime...

A lot of the times, it gets me in trouble.

I'm used to being in a big

male-dominated, uh, area.

I'm a physicist and an engineer,

and at Georgia Tech, I was the first and only girl

to play on the men's club hockey team.

So, this does not scare me at all.

I'm gonna battle my ass off and I'm gonna beat them.

These 18 strangers will be abandoned

in the islands of Fiji.

It's time to play.

It's time to, as my son said,

ball out, whatever that means.

They must learn to adapt or they'll be voted out.

Being a flight attendant, I have to deal

with thousands of personalities.

So, I have playedSurvivor in a metal tube

for nine years, baby.

In the end, only one will remain

to claim the million-dollar prize.

I want to be the hero. I have no problem

waving a giant sign, be like, "You need to worry about me."

Who will have what it takes to outwit,

outplay and outlast all the rest?

I have imagined the feeling

of playingSurvivor for a very long time.

Everybody is

like a pack of wild dogs

being held back by their leashes.

You're all sizing each other up.

And you look to another tribe,

and it's like,

the best initial reaction I've ever heard.

So, let's talk about this. Here we go.

We've got 18 strangers,

different walks of life, different generations,

different education, different occupations,

different belief systems,

different work ethic.

But you all have one thing in common.

From the comfort of your couch,

you all heard the call of Survivor,

and you answered it.

And you left your ordinary world behind.

And here you are on a tiny piece of land

in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean

in the Mamanuca Islands of beautiful Fiji.

So, let's explore how you got here.

In the middle. What's your name?

It's Mitch.

Mitch, when did you first really hear the call and say,

- "I'm gonna apply?" - Yeah.

: So, growing up as a person

who has a speech impediment,

um, I remember

watching Survivor: Amazon,

and there was a contestant on the show

who also had

her own struggle.

And it's like, "Wow. Here's someone out here",

"playing Survivor

who also struggles with something, and..."

But Mitch, that was The Amazon.

- That was years ago. -

- What took you so long? Hey.

Listen, Jeff, I've been trying to get out here

for the last 20 years.

We're glad you're here. - Wow.

Hi, Jeff. How are you? My name's Chrissy.

Chrissy, give me your Survivorstory in terms of

when you finally decided,

"I think I need to take a shot at this."

Well, I've been watching since day one.

I was 30 years old when your first episode aired,

so I'm a little older,

and I was literally laying at home in my pajamas

eating my M&M peanuts.

And you were standing there with your arms wide open,

and you're like, "Apply now." And I'm like,

"He's talking to me." So, I pull out my phone, and I'm like,

"Boop, boop, boop, boop."

Never thought somebody like me'd

be on the beach right now talking to you.

- Love it. Glad you're here. Thank you.

There's a theme here saying,

when you finally heard that call to action,

it was because you believed I was talking to you.

Was that the case for you? And what's your name?

My name is Kevin, and absolutely.

I started watching with my dad at a really young age.

Uh, what really got me excited about Survivor

was season 13, Cook Islands,

when I watched Yul Kwon, and

I saw someone who looked like me.

And he wasn't just smart. He was buff

and he was talented and he was strategic.

And ever since then, I was like,

"I'm gonna try to get on the show, but

I'm so weak and I'm so small."

But when I saw David vs. Goliath,

season 37, that's when I said, "Okay",

"the Davids are out here.

"They're surviving. Why can't I do it?" And,

not gonna lie... when I first came out on the beach,

I thought it was David vs. Goliath again.

- - There are some big,

giant behemoths here, but it's okay.

'Cause you know what? We're good, too.

- - All right.

So, let's review. Here's what we've learned.

The call can come in a lot of different ways,

in a lot of different times,

and stir a lot of different emotions,

but the result is you're all now here,

literally standing at the threshold

of your adventure. And from this point forward,

every step you take,

every action you make, will define your journey.

This is where fear can start to arise.

So, you got to make a big decision, philosophically.

"Am I going to commit and attack this game

or am I gonna hesitate and risk getting left behind?"

And here's the rub with all of this.

Just because you attack the game

doesn't mean you'll be successful.

You can still fail.

But failure in the pursuit

of something amazing...

that's admirable, that's worthy,

that's worth getting up off the couch

and leaving your ordinary world behind.

Failure due to fear...
