Hakikisho la manukuu ya English

Mistari 200 ya kwanza.

A new generation of talented builders

are carving their own path.

Picking up tools and working with their hands

to design and build unique and inspiring creations.

- Let's start with form. - This is huge.

- Whoa! Joining these ambitious builders

are a group of talented teachers

who will help them execute amazing creations.

- Awesome! - (HISSES)

Each week, three teams,

comprised of two young builders and one shop class teacher,

compete for a chance to win the title of Shop Class Champs.

- (ALL CHEERING) - Wow!

Over the course of three full days, the teams

will battle it out in the shop class...

- Are we ready, guys? - ...the build zone...

Oh!

- ...and the mill. - (WHIRS)

- (CRACKLES) - (WHIRS)

So, which build will win? - We're so close, I can taste it.

Well, that's up to our judges. - Hi.

Award-winning architect and product designer, Brooks Atwood

who has been featured in magazines and museums all around the world.

I'm so excited to see that thing!

Lauren Makk, a leading interior designer

and home decor expert with a penchant for maximum color and innovative style.

I gotta say, as an interior designer, their paint job was perfect.

And each week, the teams will also need to impress

our guest judge, a Walt Disney Imagineer.

I'm just really excited to see you guys make some magic.

Walt Disney Imagineering is the creative engine

that designs and builds all Disney theme parks

and attractions around the globe.

Founded in 1952 as WED Enterprises,

to build the world's first theme park, Disneyland,

the Imagineers combined creativity with high-tech innovation

to execute unforgettable experiences.

Today, there are thousands of Imagineers making magic worldwide.

One team from each qualifying round will advance to the semi-finals

and the top three will go head-to-head in the championship.

Eighteen teams. Eight epic builds.

- Sound good? Yeah!

And one team will earn the title of Shop Class Champions.

The winning team is...

- (GASPS) So, put on your safety goggles.

- All right! Grab your hammers,

get building, because class is in session.

I'm Justin Long, and welcome to Shop Class.

- Wow! - Wow!

Whoa!

This place is amazing!

I see a lot of tools, I see blueprints. This place is awesome.

- All right, here we go! - Yeah, this is so cool.

- Nice color, it matches us very well. - It does.

This place is really amazing!

I just can't wait to see what goes on here.

- Oh. - Oh! Oh, sorry, I'm in the wrong class.

- (SCOFFS) Oh, my God! - There you are!

- (APPLAUSE) - All right, thank you.

Hey, everyone. Welcome to Shop Class.

- Yeah! - Let's go!

Three teams have come to compete, but only one will conquer and move on

and be one step closer to earning the title of Shop Class Champs.

And taking home an epic grand prize.

We have the Gold Team.

I'm Alyssa, I'm 13, and I love being artsy and crafty.

Hey, guys. I'm Andrew, I'm 14, and I love building robotics.

I'm Kyle. I teach woodshop at Sutter Middle School

in Sacramento, California.

We have the Blue Team.

I'm Sam, and I'm 13 years old, and I love building things with wood.

Me llamo Homero. I'm 12 years old and I really like design.

I'm Brannon, I'm an instructor and teach woodworking and shop

to nine to 17-year-olds.

And rounding things off, is the Green Team.

I'm Romy, I'm 14, and I love using wood and just being creative.

I'm Nick, I'm 12 years old, and I love woodworking.

I'm Tom, I'm a retired woodworking teacher.

I taught both in high school and community college.

Okay, students. Listen up. These teachers are gonna need your help, okay?

So be the creative young builders that you are, and feel free to teach them

- a thing or two, all right? - Yeah.

Before we put your talents to the test, let's meet the panel of skilled judges

who will decide which build is top of the class.

First up is an award-winning maker and architect,

- Brooks Atwood! - Hello, everybody!

- Wow. - The next judge is an interior designer

and home decor expert, Lauren Makk.

- Hi! - And finally our guest judge,

principle production designer at Walt Disney Imagineering,

- Jameel Haiat. - Hey!

My name is Jameel Haiat, I am a principle production designer

with Walt Disney Imagineering.

When we approach a project, there's three basic phases.

Concept, design, and build. So what I do is, working with a group,

I take that concept, go into design, and make that vision come to fruition.

I'm currently working on Star Wars: Rise of The Resistance

You guys ready to find out what you're building?

- Yeah! I'm up for it. - We're ready.

Okay, teachers, grab your pushcart and bring it back to your workstation.

All right.

On the count of three,

I want you to pull the tarps, okay?

One, two, three.

Whoa! Wow!

That's a lot of books!

I see a whole bunch of books and long wooden planks,

and I was so confused.

I'll tell you this, no you're not building a bookshelf.

You're actually building...

- a Little Free Library. - Wow! That's cool!

- Hey! Okay! - Whoa!

Uh, what's the Little Free Library?

A Little Free Library is a small structure

where the public shares books with each other.

They're popping up in neighborhoods everywhere.

All across the country, these libraries enhance the communities,

and encourage reading.

So, it's up to you to design and build a better Little Free Library.

So, we have a stack of books, roofing material, some metal bits,

steel, wood and plexiglass.

Your builds will be judged on overall creativity

and design functionality.

And of course, it has to be able to withstand the brutal effects

of nature, and the winning team will move on to the semi-finals

and be one step closer to the championship.

Sound good? - Yeah!

Library voices, please! Please!

(SOFTLY) Sound good? - Yes.

Okay, so let's get building!

- All right. Let's... - Okay.

- Okay. - So, let's take a look.

Let's do this! All right, let's get over to some paper.

Let's start getting some form down.

As an architect, form follows function.

And how that works is that the building has to perform first

before it can follow the design.

If we want to go ahead and think outside the box.

So, I'm really looking to see how the teams can merge those two things.

Form and function.

It's something that's interesting to both adults and kids.

Yes. - Yeah.

I've worked on several projects that involve libraries,

and it's always important to create a functional space, but also a mood.

So, that's what I'm looking for today.

To see a really functional library

that also sets the tone for reading and learning.

So, do I... I mean, do we wanna just do, like,

your basic box with a roof peak in the middle, like a birdhouse or...

- Definitely not! Something different. - No?

With the Little Free Libraries that I've seen,

they're usually square boxes with a normal roof.

So, I think our design should incorporate some unique aspects.

As an avid builder, Andrew participates in architecture,

woodworking, and robotics classes.

Here's one of the projects that I'm working on designing right now.

And he was a finalist

in the seventh grade national VEX robotics competition.

Also, this doesn't have to be all plexiglass,

so, like, here's a frame if we draw it.

Right. Yeah.

We decided to do a Frank Lloyd Wright style house

and incorporate a post that goes through the center

for aesthetics.

Let's start with form.

Our forms are what? Bipedal people, right?

So, the form of our library won't be a person.

What is your first guess for form?

Design is putting pen to paper. Coming up with a form,

and watching the students, especially in shop class,

coming up with their own designs, their own measurements,

that's why I'm here.

I'm thinking about doing, like, a book as the roof.

(CHUCKLES) Oh! - I think it's great! I really like it.

Why not build the roof and make it look like an upside-down opened up book?

So, the rain would hit it and fall off

to the sides, and it would also look really cool

and attract the people to come to it.

Sam excelled in his middle school woodworking class so much

that his teachers recruited him.

I've been the TA for my teacher, so I do a lot of helping other kids

with their projects, and it's a lot of fun.

He's even won first place for his regatta boat build

in his local youth group.

The knob is gonna go right here, and then right behind the knob

- the magnet's gonna be right here? Yeah.

The hardest thing about our design

is figuring out how to make it sturdy enough.

We've decided to build what we're gonna call, Book House,

with windows all around this thing and a large book as a roof.

We're gonna open up some negative space underneath in this rectangular form.

That's our design and we're feeling pretty good about it.

- Yeah. - Yeah.

Um, we could do

what we were talking about, like a spaceship.

With the fins?

Yeah. So, I throw out the idea of a rocket ship,

and my whole team seems to love it.

We could do double doors

- and have them... Oh, yeah, I like that.
