Being Portuguese means pride,

but also means responsibility.

I feel proud of what we were before,

this little corner in the end of Europe,

navigators discovering new places.

And I feel responsibility because I am one of the faces of our country.

Porto are the Champions League winners.

I'm not an ambassador,

but I am.

I am a navigator, centuries later,

As a coach coming from nowhere,

I knew I had to win the Champions League with Porto,

then conquer England, Europe,

and then take on the world.

And I never had a moment of doubt. Why should? Why?

I think Mourinho knows his team are in for a battle.

Chelsea not as watertight as usual at the start of this season.

Possibly conceding one or two more goals

than certainly they did when they won the title.

First season, we won the Premier League. Second season, we won the Premier League.

Third season, we won FA Cup, Carling Cup.

The fourth season, everything changed.

A lot of stories between the owner, Roman Abramovich,

and manager José Mourinho.

No smoke without fire, perhaps. We'll see.

Roman showed over his years at Chelsea

that he was very ruthless in relation to the results.

Roman was never easy to deal with,

but José handled him very well till the last, uh, year.

There has been rumors that Mr. Abramovich wasn't happy

with the style Chelsea have been playing in lately.

He'd like them to be a bit more expansive, more creative.

Things were changing very quickly, for sure.

There was more direct contact with Roman.

He would dip his toe in at the training ground,

whereas the first two years, we kind of had no involvement with him.

Abramovich, incredible passion for football,

but knowing nothing about the situation.

Roman and him was…

was having a bit of a battle regarding transfer market,

players that he didn't want or José didn't want to sign.

And that led to rupture.

£30 million.

Shevchenko was the most expensive star Mourinho bought.

Ironically, a player he plainly did not want.

Shevchenko was on the table because of connections with the boss,

connections with agents.

And I didn't want to sign him.

But I never told him no, so he's also my responsibility.

You could sense a change in terms of feeling around the club

to do with the politics changing.

It felt like, from José being, like, this… the leader of this gang,

now other people were having conversations.

In my work, the triangle,

José, Peter Kenyon, Roman,

was invaded by strangers.

In the beginning, uh, you play at Stamford Bridge,

you look to the box,

Roman, his wife,

with one or two persons of his confidence.

A few seasons later,

former players, agents.

These kind of people, they know

where the money is.

Here come Liverpool with Gerrard. Good ball for Torres.

Now it's arriving. Torres with a debut goal at Anfield!

Chelsea are 1-0 down for the fourth time in a row this season.

The thing is, once you've won, you never wanna lose.

So there's an ongoing, continual pressure to do better.

That in itself brings stress points to it.

I think Roman changed.

For example, one day, Peter come to me quite embarrassed,

and he told me, "José, I have to tell you something."

"The boss is in Sardinia

with his boats and the people that work in his boats."

"They play football against guys from the hotel,

and they are losing."

"Can you go there to win a game for him?"

I told, "No, Peter. I have training today."

"I have to prepare for tomorrow. I cannot go."

And he was not happy with that.

José looks like he's had a trip to the hairdresser

since we last saw him.

And Roman Abramovich is here as well.

Football is changing ever so quickly.

And the power of owners, the expectations of owners,

the way they invest in a club to get return,

and the way they perceive their assets

collides into how José perceives football success.

because we saw this as not just a period of José,

we saw it as a period of laying the foundations

for the future success for the owner, the club,

the big picture of football,

where it was going, and how we were part of it.

And José didn't want to be part of that.

The problem is not the game. The problem is lots of people

that don't care with the game

getting into that space.

A losing José?

I don't think you wanna see him lose.

I remember us losing a couple of games,

and then I was on the bus, and someone's phone ringing.

And honestly, he jumped up out of his seat,

and it was like, shit, whose phone is that?

I was always sitting in the front, so he flew past me.

And I'm like, "Oh God."

And then he… then he goes like, "Are you happy we lost?"

Then everybody goes like…

When those cracks become visible to us as players,

it has a clear effect.

And it was bad.

The equilibrium had been broken.

Rosenborg shouldn't present too much of a problem to Mourinho's side.

Against all the odds,

We had some bad performances, bad results.

It was weird to us, losing football matches.

He was not happy. That was clear.

It was, um, difficult.

It's very frustrating.

When you play like this and you don't score goals,

every mistake you make, you are punished.

They called him the Special One.

But after three seasons,

it seems José Mourinho was no longer special enough.

If you've just come in, Mourinho sacked.

We're gonna get a lot more reaction to this huge story.

Club directors and chief executive Peter Kenyon

were called to an emergency meeting at Stamford Bridge late last night.

And so began the speculation of whether he'd walked or was pushed.

They've treated him appallingly. Got rid of him for no reason at all.

It's a disappointment.

He was terrific for the football and terrific for Chelsea.

I remember him coming to the dressing room.

And he said to me that he'd been sacked.

I, I… I couldn't… couldn't think about how much this man had helped my career,

how much I loved working with him.

There were tears,

which is not normal in a dressing room when a manager leaves.

You've got grown men, tears running down their face,

not really understanding why.

Even still today, I'm like…

…"That's my fault."

When we drew the Champions League game, it was my man scored.

If I didn't let that person score,

would he have lasted another couple of years?

I still feel kind of responsible for that, if that makes sense as well.

Some players would've given anything for him. I was that player.

It's disappointing how it ended, if I'm honest.

I absolutely loved him and adored him and was more upset than anybody.

He had a… a magical spell over us.

He was the guy who believed in me.

He was the guy who kept me standing

when… when I had a lot of adversity.

But if there's one thing that I understood that day…

the owner is always right.

When you give everything, you expect everything.

But the reality is that football doesn't have a big memory.

What for other guys would be an amazing job,

for me is always not good enough.

And I think that's not fair.

It hurts. But that's football.

Is it not just a curse of your own early success?

But that shouldn't be a curse.

A curse is people without success.

That's a curse. Success shouldn't be a curse.
