I think I'm gonna start from over here, if that's all right.
We rolling?
All right, let me know when you're ready because
these mosquitoes are no fucking joke, man.
Okay.
Now?
Okay, good.
In three, two...
Behind me here is the now
infamous Kruger Airplane scrap yard.
This place, which has now been determined,
the scene of a potentially gruesome multiple homicide
is where many questions still remain unanswered.
The story of five college students on the backdrop
of one of the nation's most catastrophic storms in history
took a mysterious and very dark turn on the evening
leading up to Hurricane Irma's landfall.
Following evacuation routes they somehow ended up
along the desolate road that leads to this aviation junkyard.
And that's where the questions begin.
How did they plan to ride out the storm? Who else knew they were here?
How were there signs of struggle yet almost little to no forensic evidence?
For now, the five students have been entered
into the missing persons database.
But officials say one shouldn't rule out foul play.
Reporting live, Christian Rivera,
Channel 5 News.
Got it? How was that?
Look at that thing.
Because we have to record everything in 2017
let me take you along with us to North Carolina.
-Hey. - Hey.
You know, if the path continues,
it's going to sweep up the East Coast
right up to Maryland.
- Really? -Yep.
And what spaghetti weather map did you find this on?
-Facebook. - Facebook.
Aaron's sucking on sour grapes because he's driving.
Hey, only up to Gainesville.
Yeah, sure.
Emily?
Emily?
What?
- Say hi. -No.
You are so rude.
What do you want?
Just say hi to the camera.
Like this isn't funny.
I don't even know why you think it's so funny.
Because we're going on a road trip.
This isn't a road trip, we're like evacuating.
- Really? -Yeah, really.
Um, how long have you been here, again?
Why do you need to know?
Because just tell me.
Umm, 7 years.
Yeah, so you weren't here
for all the other hurricanes?
So? - They're nothing.
-Are you serious it's nothing? - Yes, I'm telling you.
Okay, where is Aaron. Aaron?
Just checking the plugs,
topping everything off.
Aaron come on, hurry up.
We still gotta do Mo's thing.
-That's where we're going. - Calm down.
Alright. Come on let's go.
Ready.
- Here we go. - And we're on the road.
You have your seat belt on, right?
I do now, Mom.
I ordered him a cake. Michelle's going to pick it up, she's going to meet us there,
-hopefully she won't be late. - Yeah, she's always late.
And then we have to leave right away, okay, guys?
Okay, hold on, guys. Hang on, guys listen.
Off the top tonight Hurricane Irma's barreling towards the Caribbean.
This Category five storm is slamming the northeast coast
of Puerto Rico right now.
The island is being hit by winds of a 185 miles per hour.
The National Weather Service says Puerto Rico has not seen
a hurricane of Irma's magnitude since Hurricane Okeechobee back in the 1920s.
This is a massive storm here in the Atlantic Ocean.
If you're in Florida and listening now,
evacuate north immediately. Governor Scott has declared
a state of emergency for all of Florida.
Every family needs to have a plan,
have a disaster preparedness kit and be ready today.
This Friday will mark exactly one month
since the landfall of Hurricane Irma
and the horrific disappearance of five college students.
The suspect believed to be behind these events
is still at large.
Detective Mike Quill has been
giving us extraordinary insight
into the case since becoming
the lead on this investigation.
I've spent my career keeping the oath
as a police officer of the law,
and proud to continue to do so.
But in my 19 years,
I have never seen anything like this, ever.
All right, here's your cake.
Easy, guys, easy.
Ow, ow is that really necessary?
-Yes, you love it. -Relax, okay.
-Soooooo, Mo. -Yeah.
Before we sing happy birthday, just wanted you to know,
we're all here for you.
I mean, I know you've been through everything with all the,
you know, but
I'm so happy to be here with you.
-Okay, okay. - Happy birthday, Mo.
-All right, guys. - The cake's burning.
Oh, oh, oh. Okay, all right. Come on. Come on.
Yeah, make a wish. Make a wish.
-Yes birthday Mo Mo. -60, he turned 60.
Awe did you see his face, it was so poignant.
I don't think poignant really fits here.
Whose idea was it to spell my whole name on a cake?
Okay, first of all, your last name is your given name, so be proud of it.
Nobody puts their last... And the pink happy birthday sign?
-You know what Mr. Birthday Cake? -I'm a 5 year old? Oh.
Yay.
-Thanks guys, I appreciate it. -It's a good cake.
All right easy, okay. Important part right here.
Let's hear it.
Birthday shots?
Except Aaron, he needs to drive.
Oh, okay. Sorry, sorry.
Birthday shots except Aaron.
Cheers, happy birthday.
Oh. Alright here we go, cheers, cheers.
Are we gonna save some for the road trip? - Lame.
It's a long road trip we need this.
- Oh, wow. - Oh.
Ugh, that's terrible.
Do I look like a Smurf or what?
Get a close up, get a close up. Come on come on.
Why am I friends with you guys?
That's how we do it over here.
Can we just get in the car?
Let's just get out of here, just pack up.
Let's go, let's just have a good time, all right?
Let's do it guys. Road trip.
Like half the population in the state of Florida,
they were making arrangements to evacuate the state
to where I believe was North Carolina.
So it must have been like a road trip?
- Road trip. Road trip. -Yeah, road trip.
- And we're out. -Yeah. We out this bitch.
-Where are you going? -I'm goin' to North Carolina.
Yeah, we're all going to North Carolina.
-Okay, it's a joke, Mr. Grouch. -Wow, he's so feisty.
Oh my god -He's so feisty.
Rude, huh?
- Stop, stop. That's gross, just stop. -Shut up.
- I'm done with you guys. - We're all going to get to North Carolina safely.
One has to wonder what it must have been like for them, trying to find shelter
in such a strong storm barreling down, only to have to deal
with a more immediate life threatening scenario.
Yeah. Yeah. It's something we really wish we knew.
This case has been an uphill battle
and with all the lack of information, a lack of evidence
and all we don't know. This is a tough case.
Just walk us through what happened that night, if you will,
starting with the 911 call.
Well, mind you, the events of that particular night,
it's what's really in question.
The 911 call wasn't received until the following morning.
Please help, he's killing all my friends. Hello!
Now, the curfew was done, it was over. We had a lot of debris from the storm
there was downed power lines was downed cell phone towers.
So the signal was terrible.
Well, where were you when you got the call?
I was in a hotel like everybody else,
waiting out this storm over off the interstate.
Oh, wow.
When I got there a few hours later.
The place was clean.
Minus the mess that was made,
you would have never known anyone stayed there that night.
But, you know, when we started really looking...
All right, here's your cake.
That's when I realized
people were actually here
seeking shelter from that hurricane
who I believe, five college kids.
Are there any whereabouts on the kids?
Guys due to the sensitivity and nature of the case
we can't answer these questions at this time.
It is an ongoing investigation.
What I can tell you is we've identified
the five missing students first being Mohamed Toma,
- Ooh yeah. - Ana Garcia,
Emily Park,
Aaron Somerfield
and Michelle Harris.
Now, Detective Quill here, he'll be leading the investigation.
- Do you know the whereabouts of the kids? -Wait, wait not now.
