"Beyond food" is a documentary
on taking our health and energy in our own hands.
The previous documentaries you've seen on food
have exposed important realities.
They've been informative,
we have learned a lot,
and we're grateful we saw them.
However, we wanted to give you an alternative
to the fear-based information out there.
We've heard things like,
"meat's going to give you cancer.
Sugar is going to kill you.
Juicing is the solution. You must cleanse."
A fair amount of truth in those words,
yet we knew there had to be people out there
who are eating delicious food,
living with joy, awareness, and purpose,
while cultivating an abundant relationship with food,
with their body, and their minds.
We made it our mission to find them
and share their knowledge with you
because this journey changed our lives.
Bio-hackers, raw foodies,
paleo wild cavemen and women,
foragers, ranchers, neuroscientists,
doctors, and explorers all over the U.S.
This is both their story and your story,
and this is about what you can do
for your body, for your mind, and for your life.
You have 100% free agency on every food substance
that goes into your mouth and goes into your body.
It is your decision.
It's about wild foods.
It's a silent machine
that runs on air and water,
sunlight, some food.
A whole-food, plant-based diet...
Just three words-- eat more fat.
Well, why do 99% of people not know this stuff?
Why is there so much misinformation out there?
Created complexity out of where we never needed it.
Uh, we need it to stay simple.
We have to concentrate all of our needs
and make food that will actually fulfill them all.
Even the emotional needs, 'cause we often eat emotion.
If you always feel like this, that's all you know.
But at some point, if one day you feel like this,
you realize this is your potential,
and then you can start making incremental changes.
In seven long days, 12 to 14-hour days,
you can make as much progress
in mind control, brain training,
as if you did zen for between 21 and 40 years.
I don't see humans really as wanting to improve.
I see humans as wanting to improve when there's a problem.
This is meringa alifera,
which is probably one of the greatest super foods
I've ever found.
We're one of the first civilizations
in the history of the world
that really is-- fears the sun,
and yet we should be embracing the sun.
Without the sun, there is no life.
Everybody has the answers for themselves.
Everybody does.
We all have them, but we've forgotten.
And this comes down to is it fair to bio-hack?
Are you cheating?
I started putting on, you know,
loads of muscle and losing fat
kind of at my whim, whenever I wanted to.
Yes, I'm cheating.
For me, "one step at a time"
meant listening to my body police.
And if my body felt bad after eating something,
then I started trying to experiment
and seeing if I could reproduce that feeling
with the same food,
and if I could reproduce it at least three times,
then I'd say, "okay, well,
I need to eliminate this from my diet."
Think about the foods that you're eating
before you put them in your mouth.
Whatever I choose to do in my life, I can do it.
I just gotta put my mind to it
and do not let myself get in my own way.
The teacher approached the mother and said,
"I want your son to be checked for a.D.D."
She did not want to put him on any medication.
Within eight sessions,
the teacher said, "your son's been doing
so much better at school. He's focusing better."
This is how I do the designer brain series
where, you know, I look at each of the neurotransmitters that's involved
and how well I'm thinking, how well I'm behaving,
how well I'm sleeping,
and I study by raising each one of them in turn.
How does that affect how I feel?
You're really better off
if you don't try and do every change consciously.
Because your conscious mind is very slow,
and it's easy to get confused by, you know,
the labrador-mammalian brain in your head.
If instead you train the brain directly,
you train the nervous system directly,
profound things happen much more quickly.
Including weight loss and lack of--
and less stress and better sleep.
It all just comes together.
It's, like, "listen, just make little changes."
And what happens is, truly,
as you make little changes and see improvements
and have more energy and feel better,
oh, all of a sudden you have more time
and you figure out ways to make more changes.
Biohacking is the art of understanding
and controlling the nervous system
to lower your stress levels while upgrading your energy,
mental focus, and overall biology.
One of the most effective ways
of thinking about biohacking
is that we're creating bio feedback loops.
We're allowing the brain to talk to us.
Your brain desperately wants to improve its function
even if you don't really want it to consciously.
It still will do that automatically,
'cause that's what the brain does.
What we're trying with biohacking
is trying to understand the molecular processes
of our own biology and make ourselves better.
Well, astronauts go on exploration adventures in outer space.
Bio cybernauts go on exploration adventures
in inner space, into their own minds.
The problem is the brain can see the whole world around us.
It can smell and sense.
It has no nerves pointing inside it,
except a nerve hooked up to your back teeth
that isn't that useful.
Other than that, the brain is blind to itself,
so as soon as it gets these sounds,
it goes, "wait, those sounds are me."
And it starts optimizing.
It realizes, "oh, this part of me is turned off.
This part's overactive."
And it changes its levels
without you having to do anything.
So neuro feedback
can take people who have lifetimes of trauma,
like people who've-- literally born in abusive families
or people who're born in war-torn areas
who were traumatized as children or in terrible accidents
who are literally walking around like this all the time,
not as really fully-functioning humans,
and in really short amounts of time
can turn them into people who are relaxed,
centered, functioning, and happy.
It is amazing what you can do.
Even if you're a perfectly healthy,
high-functioning pro athlete, you still improve.
We're allowing the brain to talk to us.
We're allowing the heart to talk to us.
We're allowing the urine ph to talk to us.
So that as we see changes
that are taking place in real time,
we're able to connect them to something that matters.
When your brain makes the desired brain activity,
a tone comes on.
When the desired activity becomes bigger,
the tone becomes louder.
And, now, the brain waves fluctuate very rapidly,
and, um, the feedback
changes the volume of the tone
that's tracking the changes in the brain waves
50 times a second.
So even in the Alpha-one training
where you're getting feedback on four sides,
you're getting 200 opportunities per second
for your brain to learn,
and so this is one of the reasons
that the learning is so fast.
Medicine doesn't really pay any attention
to this kind of thing.
I found correlations between ph and hydration
that is not even described in the literature.
So we're now at this brave new world
where all of this subtle information
that we would normally just be ignoring
is becoming available.
The core of biohacking
is how do I turn off the nervous system stress
that isn't serving me?
How do I actually go out there and thrive?
It turns out, some of the ways of doing that
are ridiculously simple.
Like eat more fat, eat less toxins.
Take deep breaths.
Things you've probably heard before, right?
But having the data and then knowing
that if you do these right
you can pass that on to your children
