- Here is a visual representation of our journey

so far through Door County.

It's now time to head up the road from Carlsville, Wisconsin

to take the short drive to the village of Egg Harbor.

Just outside the Egg Harbor marina,

you'll find Shipwrecked Brew Pub.

This village of around 200 permanent residents is overtaken

in the summer months by tourists.

Shipwrecked is an Egg Harbor destination hotspot.

They're equally as famous for their beverages and food

as they are for the folklore that surrounds it.

In 1868 it was a mercantile

where people came in, brought their fur,

got their supplies, all of that kind of thing.

And the stage coach stopped here.

The building that was here was literally built

on limestone chipped out of the ground.

- The old building was an add-on to an add-on,

it was an old bar, restaurant

and then they added hotel rooms,

and everything was an add-on.

I don't know what there is for evidence,

why it's, I mean, the stories are Al Capone visited here.

- Tunnels to shipwreck, things like that had been known.

The tunnel went out to the water,

and that's kind of his MO to get away from the FBI

and the CIA and all the people that were always chasing him.

- And bodies may be buried in the basement.

- So there is a tunnel that is underneath the building,

or was, because when we had high water, the one year

and it melted really really fast,

it came in through that side of the building

and went out through our dry storage through the other side.

You could smell it.

It's not like the rocks are just cracked

and it's seeping through because it only came

through one side.

Water just doesn't flow straight.

I agree, I agree.

- And that's where we had the most wear and tear

in the basement.

So, we have excavating guys coming in,

well, we've owned it for 20 years,

but we never dug up the basement.

- There was a fire down there at some point.

We still have the burnt beams down there.

So when they excavate it, we tell them these things to,

you find anything that looks like a tunnel, stop.

And no, they didn't come across anything.

- Whether or not they tell you, there's a tunnel.

- But that's not to say that it didn't happen,

but yeah, they didn't find anything.

We had a fire back on August 20th last year,

which was a year ago today.

So, we opened at 11 that morning.

I was bartending at the time, yeah,

and we had a housekeeper upstairs

and he ran down the stairs and he was like,

Hannah, Hannah, there's a fire in room five.

Call 911.

Door County 911, what's the,

your emergency?

- It is Shipwrecked in Eggs Harbor.

- Okay. - We have a fire in room five

upstairs? - And is there actual flames?

- Yeah, I see that right now, I am looking at them.

She's like, okay well, just get everybody out

as soon as you can and this and that,

so it was probably like 10 after 11,

it was literally 10 minutes after we opened.

And I just made four bloody marys for my customers

at the bar so I told them to take it with them

which I really hope they still have those cups.

Everyone was checked out of the hotel.

I know that.

Generally the rule was by 11, was checkout time,

so everyone was gone, the only person that was up there

at that time was the housekeeper.

- I had no idea the housekeeper was in there.

And I opened the door and it's just black smoke

that comes out and I'm like shit.

There was a fire escape

kinda kiddy corner from where we were

so I opened the door and then it just went up.

I didn't realize the housekeeper had the window open.

- Yeah, and then once I actually got outside,

the air conditioner was busting out of the window.

A friend of my son's dad called me,

he's a fireman at Sturgeon Bend said Shipwrecked's on fire.

My God, got in a car, drove up there

and it was ablaze.

Get out, get out from there.

My God, get out!

Yes, yes, get out!

- So obviously everybody got out safe and sound.

- The fire inspector had said that it was a lamp cord

that caught a chair on fire.

It wasn't the air conditioner

like we had kinda all thought that day.

This is awful.

Fact is what are we gonna do?

Will we rebuild, I don't know,

and everybody starts asking questions immediate,

I mean, the fire is still going, I know,

a hundred people ask me are you gonna rebuild

or what are you gonna do?

I mean I don't know what we're gonna do.

- I don't think any of us really knew that that was

really what was happening.

Once the roof caved in it was,

it burnt for like 12 hours.

And we all were here forever, right?

- Yeah, it was unreal. - Everything was so drenched

and it was just like this sickening feeling

of everything in the inside, our life was gone.

- Yeah, it was scary, I never really experienced

such a major loss or catastrophe like that.

Been really attached to Shipwrecked since we started.

We came to the conclusion that let's rebuild this thing.

It's really nice, we redid it, same footprint.

But the building outside is totally different.

Everyone keeps coming in and asking me,

are the ghosts still here, are the ghosts still here?

And I kept saying I don't know.

- We used to have a little window on the old building

and a lot of people had said that they saw a little girl,

up in that window.

- After the peeks would be somewhere around here.

- And we heard people call, they were calling the police

or something and be like, I think there's a little girl

up in this building in the window, we see her.

The prior owners all had stories.

He told me that he'd be doing paperwork

and somebody'd be looking over his shoulder all the time.

- So there's plenty of times where I've bartended here

and were closing up at night, putting up chairs

and stuff and chairs would fly off the bar.

And it's not like they're close enough to hurt you,

but you still turn around and you're like, seriously?

The story kinda behind that chair thing.

There was a lady, Verna.

She was here in the mercantile days

and she watched the front of the house.

And part of that chair thing was,

if we had customers in, and you started to close up,

that's an absolute no-no and she would push the chairs down.

- I have a younger brother who worked at Shipwrecked,

he's had, he had a bunch of experience and one time

he came running into Brew House, he was white as a ghost,

freaking out, all the pans flew off the wall.

- I was closing with Flora, she was bartending

and we had shut all the lights off and everything,

we were about to leave and the door, the front door,

downstairs rattled and it sounded like somebody was trying

to get in the door, like they're playing the door handle.

And the window down there.

They let us know they're still here.

- We had dinner before we filmed, it was delicious

and amazing as I knew it would be.

I had never been at Shipwrecked, but I've only heard

good things about it.

Also in Wisconsin we have something

called the Friday fish fry.

Everyone restaurant has one, and they're judged accordingly

by all the residents in Wisconsin.

But Shipwrecked's is really good.

I highly recommend it as well as the cheese curds.

So after we finished dinner we waited

until Shipwrecked was closed.

And then we started filming.

It's been one year to the day that the fire happened

in the building.
