Welcome to the Netflix FYSee space.

We're here to celebrate the brand new season of

"David Letterman: My Next Guest Needs No Introduction."

This should be a pretty good night. Gonna be a night of serious facial hair.

Tonight Dave is gonna sit down with the very first star

of the very first "Netflix Original" anything.

Oh, God.

Do you ever vomit?

Do you ever feel like you're going to vomit

-before you go-- -Usually, right before

I go right out, I vomit in my mouth, keep it in there,

and I just swallowed it... swallow it.

Savvy.

You know them, you love 'em, you can't live without 'em...

David Letterman and Zach Galifianakis.

-Help us. -Watch it, sir. Fine.

Heave ho.

Thank you so much.

Thank you.

Thank you. Where should I sit?

-You sit right here. -Mr. Sarandos.

-Always a pleasure. -Always a pleasure, sir.

-Thank you very much. -Please, enjoy.

-Thank you. -Please enjoy.

Ted Sarandos, ladies and gentlemen.

Thank you.

Stockholders.

Do you know, uh, Ted?

Uh, yes, I do.

How well do you know him?

Ted just explained everybody, David. If you were paying attention.

-No, I didn't hear it. -Um...

Yeah, I've known Ted for...

ten-- twen--

How long is-- How old is Netflix?

-I'm not that interested. -Okay.

Uh, what I want to know is, have you had dinner at his house?

-No. -Okay, that's good.

Uh, first of all, thank you very-- Thank you very much for being here.

And thank you to Mr. Galifianakis...

Uh, I've tried to express to him

what this means to me to have him here.

Uh, I heretofore have not known him well.

Have known of him, certainly,

but not so long ago spent one lovely half day with him,

which so far has been the best day of the year,

-and found him-- -

...found him absolutely delightful...

and the fact that he's here tonight...

is, uh, a joy for me.

-So, thank you very much, Zach. -Thank you. That's...

I just-- Can I just say before we get--

I just feel like this is a prank and I'm gonna go with it.

Because I've seen who's been on... like, who you've interviewed before

with this entity here and, uh...

Something doesn't feel right, that I'm here.

Do you-- Uh, what do you know about Netflix?

I know that your, uh...

"Live with Zach Galifianakis at the Purple Onion"

was an early acquisition for the company.

Uh, I think they produced it.

-They produced it, yes. Yes. -Yeah.

So, you are... You have a rich history here.

Uh, yes, but I'm on their DVD list.

I still get the DVDs.

In the case?

That's kind of the relationship we have.

Yeah. Um...

And do you watch a lot of stuff on, uh, the Netflix?

Uh... Oh, Netflix. Yeah, of course.

I'm sorry. What did you think I was talking about?

TV in general, I guess. But, um...

I... I... You know, I... I don't... I don't... I...

To be honest, I don't watch a lot of things. I...

I watch my sizzle reel a lot.

-Uh-huh. -Um...

But, uh, on Netflix... So, Netflix has your show.

Okay...

I just-- I just asked this as a setup to what I wanted to say.

Okay, go ahead.

Um... several years ago, a good friend of mine...

uh, and I were talking about just this very thing,

what, what do we watch.

And she said to me,

uh, her mother-in-law, being Korean,

she said, "My mother-in-law loves Netflix

because there are Korean soap operas."

And... And not being familiar with the culture,

I thought, "Whoa, Korean soap operas."

And so, I started watching... Korean soap operas.

-Anything? -Um...

What am I supposed to do with that information?

I'll tell you what you can do.

So, I started watching and...

Is it subtitled, or are you fluent in Korean, by chance?

I believe they are subtitled.

-But... -"Believe they are..."

But it was fascinating, because

the one that I watched, the one that I absolutely fell in love with,

was, was about, uh, cooking.

And apparently, uh, Korea is a cuisine center of the world.

-Mm-hmm. -And this man,

this chef was very demanding.

And there was a young female cook...

and you could tell from the very beginning

that she wanted to succeed for herself and her career,

but also to... to please the... the chef,

the... the Mr. Master Chef of Korea.

So, there you go. Uh...

And he had... he had her cook over and over again,

the same, the same dish.

And each time, it would not be good enough.

Something would be missing.

And she would stay late after the restaurant closed,

she would come in early when the restaurant-- before it opened,

and worked very, very hard.

And boy...

uh, sometimes they'd get along, sometimes they didn't.

But, you know what? Before the end of the season...

they got together.

We'll be right back with the worst Netflix commercial ever.

- -

Um... Is your middle name actually "Knight"?

Yes. Yes, It is.

-K-N-I-G-H-T? -Yes, sir.

And your parents gave that to you...

Is it a family name? Is it a...

I come from a long line of, uh, knighted men in my family.

No, it's my grandmother's maiden name.

-So, just... -Lovely.

-It seemed to work. -Yeah.

Siblings?

I have a brother and a sister.

-Yes. -Names.

Uh...

-You don't have to-- -My brother is... I'll tell you this.

My brother's name is, uh, Greg, and, uh... about five, seven years ago...

I called my sister and I'm like,

"Hey, Mia, let's start calling Greg 'Craig'."

So...

for five years...

"Okay, Craig. I'll see you at Thanksgiving." I'll text him,

"Hey, Craig, when are you going to come to the airport? I'm waiting."

He's never said anything about it.

-He's winning. -Yeah.

Well, I guess you're right.

-He's doing it 'cause he knows... -Mm-hmm.

But, that's my brother.

That's, that's delightful...

-because it's just a very thin slice. -Yes.

He's the funni-- He's the funniest human.

Like, my brother and sister are much funnier than...

Like, I'm... I was the quiet one...

believe it or not.

And, um, I'm still relatively, I think, quiet,

but they are the funny...

I think it was not expected that...

Funnier than you, you believe.

They...

If they had... If they had pursued it,

I think they would have done very, very well.

You know, you hear this often about the Manning family.

Uh, Peyton, of course...

For a minute I thought you said "Manson family."

Uh, and then, and then, you get down to the, uh, the third one,

who, uh, was not able to play professional football.

And people say, "Oh, but he was...

he was better...

uh, than Peyton, and he was better than the other one in New York."

Yeah, my whole family, my extended, my cousins...

I would always just kind of observe them with... with comedy,

more than who was on television, growing up.

Oh, now, this... Let me interrupt you there.

Who got your attention on television when you were growing up?

-When you were a kid... -Yeah.

Like, my father and I used to watch comics on The Ed Sullivan Show,

and that was a nice experience for the both of us.

Did you have similar experiences to somebody,

man, woman, or a show that got your attention

when you were first able to, you know, watch the TV unassisted?

Um...

What was that last part?

"When you were able to watch TV on a system?"

-What did you say? -

Yeah, on a system.

Didn't you have a system at the house?

"Unassis-- Unassisted!"

-Oh. Unassisted. Okay, um... -Yeah.

-Unassisted viewing, um... -Mm-hmm.

Well, do you remember Shields and Yarnell?

-Yes. -Okay.

So, when I was young, young...

Um... If you don't know who Shields and Yarnell were--

A mime team.

-Mr. Shapiro knows. Yes. -Yes.

Yeah, a mime husband and wife.

-Husband and wife. -Yes.

And maybe, as far as we know,

-the only husband-wife mime team. -Right.

Yes, that usually ends in divorce.
