1999, Jakarta.

Grandpa.

Are you heading to work? Can I tag along?

-You should just stay at home. -C'mon, Grandpa.

You never let me tag along. Dad lets me when he leaves for work.

-My job's different that Dad's. -What is it you do anyway?

Go ahead and sleep. It's bed time.

People saw my grandpa as a psychic. He had the ability to see the other world.

The mystical one that ordinary people can't see.

He could communicate with the occult, knew of their world.

And when I was seven,

my grandpa told me I would inherit the same powers and become a psychic just like him.

He said that the ability runs in the family.

A special power, but one that could prove calamitous,

because what you see, what you experience, might not always be pleasant.

He also said that my psychic vision would be revealed when I'm ready at 23.

The Darmo House, Surabaya

You sure this place is haunted?

Positive.

This house is notoriously creepy.

People say a djin often appears at midnight.

They say a family once wanted to get rich through black magic.

They paid sacrifices and offerings to the djin.

The family wanted an abundance of wealth. Gold, properties, everything.

But then they reneged on their promise and no longer offered sacrifices to the djin.

Exactly at midnight, the djin slaughtered them and took this house as its own.

Nobody would buy the house even if you slash the price.

Let's go.

What the hell is that doing here?

Pansy. Nothing unusual about snakes inhabiting vacant houses like this one.

I'd rather see a ghost than find snakes.

C'mon.

Let's go, Mil.

Come on.

Karina, I'm coming!

-Danang! -Mil, dive in. The water's cool!

-Looking for a new place to ghost hunt? -Nope, looking for work.

You got today's papers?

Mil, it's been six months since we graduated.

We're jobless. We're busy ghost hunting all over the place.

-My dad's been hounding me to find work. -So have my parents.

But I'm not giving up. I have faith we can prove that the supernatural exists.

I've studied everything under my grandpa.

I've read all the books. I've studied all the rituals.

And even though I've yet to see them,

I'm positive that proof of their activities exist.

-All we need to do is find those proofs. -And sell our findings to the TV stations?

Host our own talk-show on the supernatural?

Help solve those cases?

Work and live our passion?

Ji, this has been my dream since I was a kid. This is what you've also wanted since your mom died, right?

Panji, when your mom passed away, even the doctors couldn't figure out the cause.

You've been searching for years to find out whether she died at the hands of evil supernatural beings.

And that if your hunch is right, you wish to help others who are going through the same thing as you,

to help explain what the medics could not.

That's what we both want, isn't it, Panji?

But there comes a time when we should give up.

Mil....

I didn't come here to bring up ghost hunting.

There's another matter I want to talk about.

Okay.

I've wanted to tell you this since forever,

but, well, we've been friends all this time.

I'm afraid of ruining our friendship.

To be honest... I have absolutely no idea how to say this.

I seriously have no clue.

Alright. I'll just say it.

Mil... I've lik--

Mil?

Panji, I know where to ghost hunt next.

A challenge to prove the mall is not haunted.

I called and put up our names. We're first in line.

In 1998, during the May riots, there was a fire at the mall.

It happened during the looting.

Hundreds of people were burnt.

The mall was destroyed. Three years later, the mall was rebuilt, but it remains deserted.

There are always these strange happenings.

A lot of the shop owners can't stand it. They eventually leave because they feel like they're being haunted.

A shop owner died mysteriously at the mall last month.

Ever since then, nobody wants to go to that mall.

Mil, this is a bogus challenge. Just look at the ad.

It's a 500 million reward to boot. It's a scam. Nobody'll put up that kind of money these days.

It's just a marketing ploy to get people to come and crowd the mall. Create a buzz, you know?

What a trick. Just accept that you're gonna go bankrupt.

I bet there's nothing left at the mall anyway.

Let's just go have a swim.

Danang, are you dense? If nothing's going on at the mall, what's the point of creating such a challenge?

Throw away free money?

There's gotta be something there.

Besides, nothing wrong with checking it out, right?

If we don't find anything, then so be it. We'll pocket 500 million. We'll split it even.

But if we find something off, it'll be great for our coverage.

We'll obtain proof.

Panji, I'll be turning 23 while we're there.

At 12 o'clock midnight, on 22nd April.

I'll be able to see what we've been searching for this whole time.

I'm positive we won't be wasting our time going.

Fine. But this will be the last time.

If we don't find anything there, that's the end of our search.

No more ghost hunting.

-The guests are here, sir. -Alright.

Morning, sir. We're the ones here for the challenge.

-Right, right. I've been waiting. I'm Jaya, owner of the mall. -I'm Panji.

I'm Mila, sir.

This is the challenge agreement, sir.

Vacant, isn't it? We ceased operation last week.

This way.

Even though we've closed up the mall, there's still plenty of tenants who haven't picked up their inventories.

They say they're too petrified to come. There's nothing to fear, though.

Whatever such and such weird happenings never actually occurred.

Seems like someone is out against me. You know, the usual business competition.

They made up false rumors regarding my mall. Linked it to the 1998 riot.

Said there were these sightings and whatnot, whatever.

-What about the store owner who died mysteriously? -Mysterious? It was just an accident, fell down the stairs.

People just blew it out of proportion.

What about the rumors that the mall is haunted?

There you go. Everything's simply "they say", "people say", but there's never any proof.

We give them the best service. Both visitor and tenant safety are guaranteed.

The only issues are the CCTV that often malfunctions and the crappy cellphone signal.

Even those issues are being fixed.

No wonder nobody's staying. No signal. What is this, the stone age?

As far as I know, supernatural energy could usually affect the cellphone signal, sir.

What? What's that got to do with anything?

I've never believed in those kinds of things and I've never witnessed them myself.

Let alone in this mall. That's all bull.

You'll see for yourselves.

I issued the challenge to prove that my mall is one hundred percent safe.

That there's no such thing as supernatural disturbances.

That people don't have to be afraid of opening a store here or to come to the mall.

I need your eyewitness account.

You brought the camera?

All the glass doors in the mall are extra thick. We're still traumatized by the riot.

The glass were easily shattered. Everybody forced in to loot, everything was burnt.

We've constructed everything to be as secure as possible.

Alright, let's go through the rules.

You'll be locked up for 24 hours. Tomorrow morning at 8, exactly after 24 hours, we'll open the doors.

Then you publish your findings.

I guarantee you, there's nothing supernatural here.

You get the money, I get the exposure.

-Deal? -Yes, sir.

Very well then.

What an eccentric weirdo. So bent on declaring his mall is safe.

There's gotta be something fishy.

You're way too suspicious, Danang. This has to do with prestige, pride, honor.

Let's go.

Jelangkung, jelangkung voodoo doll, we're having a small gathering.

Come uninvited, leave unescorted.

Jelangkung, jelangkung, we're having a small gathering.

Come uninvited, leave unescorted.

Jelangkung, jelangkung, we're having a small gathering.

Come uninvited, leave unescorted.

Jelangkung, jelangkung, we're having a small gathering.

Come uninvited, leave unescorted.

Let's go.

See? There's nothing here.

No wonder the mall's deserted. All they have are rats.

We won't be needing the equipment for now. It's too loud to the point of static.

-Danang, where are you headed? -I'm off to fulfill my suppressed obsession.

Better than doing nothing till tomorrow.

What are you up to?

A concert!

Mil! Mila! Mil!

Yes!

It says that not all supernatural beings can see each other.

It also says that there are those that are kind, and those that are evil.

My grandpa said the same thing.

And that if you feel a breeze, that usually means they're nearby.

Observing, deciding who's most vulnerable for them to possess.

And if they're caught on camera....

Here, they look like this. Orbs.

What's this smell?

-I think it's jasmine. -No, it's frangipani.

Panji, did you spritz on some perfume?

Mil, if a guy happens to like you and declares it via letter, what will your reaction be?

A guy declaring his feelings through a letter?

This is 2014, not 1914. I'd rather him tell me in person.

-Mil.... -...Hmm?

Remember the other day when I wanted to discuss something serious with you?

That's right. What did you want to tell me?

So, I've always fe--

What's up!

-Nice! Where'd you get the bike? -The bike store. Abandoned upstairs. Let's go for a ride.
