48 teams from all over the globe including the UK, France, Brazil, Australia

and of course Canada have converged here in Los Angeles to square off for a

chance to take home the grand prize the giant nut

tonight is the second night of the qualifying round in

what's already been the hardest hitting tournament yet as the

entire field tries to bash their way into the single elimination stage

32 robots will advance the goal for the

builders is pretty clear but how to get there is

an absolute mystery not only is this year's tournament double the size

they're getting hit with unknowns from every angle teams they've never seen

strategies they've never faced and an arsenal of every weapon imaginable

it's a puzzle they'll need to solve if they hope to move on but here to

break down the night a sports casting heavyweight

hey guys

good evening Sam

well guys we're awfully excited let's see exactly where we are in the tournament

48 robots entered this competition and we've

already seen 8 winners move on to the round of 32

tonight we'll see another 16 builders battle

it out for a chance to claim the ultimate prize

as Sam earlier you talked about the mystery

of the unknown and Kenny for a guy who has

fought in title fights inside the octagon I

gotta imagine that scares you to death doesn't it

if you don't know exactly what your opponent is going to do

it's tough but you know as Sun Tzu said know

your enemy you have to call on your experiences

and you have to get as much intel as possible

walk the pits kick the tires ask about the weapons a little bit

try to get as much information from the builders as you can

also watch the fights not only from last

season but every fight that happens tonight

alright well it's time to get the night started

let's meet one of the builders in our first battle

last year was a huge disappointment

it is over as shop gets eaten alive

it's hard to see something that you put so much

time and energy and love into just get torn up

my name is Zoe Stevenson I'm returning to this season with my bot Chomp

the pressure really is on I feel like I have to do justice to this idea of Chomp

I've spent all year working on how to make her much more deadly

the biggest change to Chomp this year is that instead of being a crusher

which applies a lot of force but is really pretty slow

she's a pneumatic hammer which will go scary fast

not only have we changed her weapon but we've added some software capabilities

computerization is a total game changer

there is a camera inside Chomp where she can see what's in front of her

she'll drive herself that'll let her hammer hit in the right spot every time

and that'll also help her keep pointed in the

right direction so she doesn't get blindsided

Chomp is going to be an autonomous robot destroyer

I want nothing more than to be the first female champion of new BattleBots

okay let's break down Disco Inferno versus Chomp

let's just start with a name Disco Inferno pretty cool right?

it wants to be number one

I like that!

so smooth so two thumbs up there

led by Jason Bardis he's a guy who went to Cornell

he's been out of the BattleBots game for a while

but guys he watched last season's BattleBots competition very closely

and he came up with this assessment

the drivers stink

so there you go how's that for confidence?

he's confident in his driving skills

he's confident in his bot building skills

this is a guy who has done some work for NASA

so very impressive guy

and what's better than one weapon?

two weapons he came with a flipping device and a horizontal spinner

so I'm interested to see what this guy can do

and he will take on Chomp and Zoe Stephenson

we all remember her from last year

first time ever fighting in a robot competition

lost both of her matches

she brings back Chomp to the party

looking at the tail of the tape

and you look at Chomp's side there's one number that stands out

yeah absolutely and that's the weapon of Chomp

if that thing's working properly that's going to

be the most powerful hammer in the competition

it really is

and as far as bots go

this is one of the most technologically advanced bots

in the whole competition

obviously having a good time

but do not underestimate these guys

they can't even compete

in the red square

every day he's hustling

with the performance a year ago

even though she won over the crowd

there's no doubt about it

but it all comes down to winning

and whether or not you can deliver

it looks like Disco's actually using that flipper to protect its own spinner blade

really hasn't been very effective

I'm not sure that thing's functional

if not he's going to have to get creative in order to score points

before it gets thrown into the screw
