we will take an in-depth look

we're in a very old neighborhood in irvington, indiana,

just outside of indianapolis.

We're here to investigate a very haunted cottage.

Why is it haunted?

Because a little boy was murdered by a serial killer

by the name of h. H. Holmes.

H. H. Holmes is considered to be america's first serial killer.

In 1882, his taste for blood was cultivated in medical school,

where he gained access to cadavers for dissection.

His indifference towards life

led him to construct an apartment building

just outside of chicago designed specifically to conceal

the murders of countless victims.

This came to be known as the murder castle.

The complex included soundproof rooms

where lethal doses of gas would asphyxiate victims.

Chutes with trapdoors were installed so bodies

could be dropped to the basement without detection.

The flesh of his victims was removed in acid vats,

and the bones mounted so skeletons

could be sold to medical schools.

This was the beginning of the end for h. H. Holmes,

right where I'm standing.

This is where, in 1894,

it was also the end for little 8- year-old howard pitezel.

And we're going to go talk to the owner now.

She claims that something very dark, very evil

is inside her home.

Are we going to make contact with the spirit of h. H. Holmes?

I want to say about 2 years ago, maybe 21/2.

Samantha starbrite, who finds comfort

in a childlike lifestyle, has lived here for 5 years.

that there is something sinister here?

Yeah. I definitely think there's some kind of activity here.

Something's going on.

Do you think that because howard pitezel,

he was young, you know what I mean,

and he was murdered in this house.

Do you think that you're vulnerable for something dark?

I feel very vulnerable sometimes, you know?

It's sad what happened to him,

but I can't help but wonder if that --

you know, something might happen to me someday in this house.

It just has that sort of cloud.

that's still an active crime scene.

So, is it true h. H. Holmes poisoned howard?

Absolutely.

On October 10th, 1894,

holmes murdered young howard pitezel.

he cut the child's body into segments,

then attempted to burn the pieces in the stove.

When that proved too difficult, he took the remaining flesh

and buried it around the property.

These teeth were recovered in the flue of the chimney.

Not long after, the law caught up with holmes.

Just before his execution, he wrote,

"I was born with the devil in me.

I could not help the fact that I was a murderer,

no more than the poet can help the inspiration to song."

She gave me this funny look.

I said, "what's that?"

and she says, "I feel like the spirit

of h. H. Holmes just went inside of me,"

and it, like -- your mom said that?

Yeah, and then she said, "sweet dreams, howie," to me.

Yeah. I was terrified.

To hear samantha tell me her mother claims

she was possessed by the spirit of h. H. Holmes

and saw her daughter as the child

who holmes murdered in this house

makes me very concerned for samantha,

but we learn holmes' spirit has a much larger target.

What you'll find in this area

is that people don't work in their yards at night.

People don't cook out at night.

People don't party at night.

So, you and the neighbors

believe that the spirit of h. H. Holmes is still here.

He is outside.

Holmes, on most of these houses,

witnesses say he is trying to get in that house.

He's still looking for howard.

He rattles the windows.

He jars the doors.

Something's trying to get into these houses.

And they and you believe

it is the spirit of h. H. Holmes.

They believe it's holmes. He's still here.

samantha became so affected,

she recently attempted to make contact with the spirits

using a device that is commonly found in any toy store.

I started using a ouija board.

I felt like there was a dark presence

that was just making itself home here, and --

were you doing this by yourself?

Yes. Yes, I was.

Would you say at first you were making contact

with what you believe to be a little boy,

and then something darker came through later on?

Yeah. I think that's exactly what happened.

Yeah. I burned that ouija board since, so --

did you? Yeah.

It was that bad? Yeah.

After opening herself up more to these spirits,

samantha began receiving unexplained marks

on her body while she slept.

I got a couple marks on my arm, like, red marks.

Like, I went to sleep, and I woke up, and they were there.

Okay, so, you would get marked while you sleep,

and you couldn't explain that.

Yeah.

Being marked is an extremely dangerous situation

for samantha, but the stakes are about to get even higher.

Alan has just informed me

that he is in possession of a once-forgotten chest

recently discovered by a local couple.

This chest contains personal items

that actually belonged to h. H. Holmes.

As we examine the contents, aaron and billy take cindy,

a psychic medium, down to the basement

to see what she can sense.

I'll let you go first. Okay.

This is the first time you've been downstairs in the basement?

Yeah, first time I've been downstairs in the basement, yes.

Are you sensing anything at all?

Um...Well, howard's here in the house.

I'll tell you that.

that's the boy. Yeah, the little boy.

And he's followed us down because he does know

I can see him,

and...He's just trying to get someone

to listen to him and talk to him.

He's lost.

I mean, he's just sad. He's lost.

He wants to be with his family,

and nobody's been able to help him do that.

Okay, so, this is the h. H. Holmes stash of stuff.

Yeah. Yeah.

Sure.

Yes.
