KAITO'S FULL DINOSAUR STORY

The dinosaur museum was amazing.

I saw all these dinosaur fossils…

I learned about their history,

and also,

they had this back area where they don't normally let people enter.

They showed me how they extract the fossils.

How long were you there?

A while. Maybe two hours?

-Are you serious? -Yeah.

Maybe even two-and-a-half hours.

You're being for real?

You can spend that long there?

Two hours wasn't nearly enough time for it all.

I saw maybe two-tenths of it. So that's one-fifth.

I wish you'd started with the simpler fraction.

or you could accidentally drill away at some of the bone.

So out on the deck, we have a few cool things that I can show you.

THEY HEAD FOR ANOTHER SPECIAL AREA

THAT ONLY RESEARCHERS GET TO SEE

So, because we're in sunny Southern California,

when it's nice out, we actually…

-We've got a leg bone. -Big!

This is an upper leg bone.

Where they've been repairing because there's a big crack down the center of it.

So, we can come out here with hand tools to prepare things out.

This is also where, you can see behind,

that's where all of our field jackets are.

So, when we are in the field, and we find something that we like,

because it's precious and we don't want to break it,

we don't do what Beau is doing in the field.

When we find something, instead of trying to get to the bone,

what we actually do is we cut down around it,

-and we keep a layer of rock around it. -Yeah, yeah.

And then we cover it, and you can see here, this brown,

it's burlap. So it's a fiber.

And then this white stuff is plaster.

So we make a protective jacket around the rock around the fossil.

And back over here, when we come back in from the field,

all of those white things are jackets that we've collected

but haven't even opened yet.

So, this is where we keep everything outside

until we get to the point where we're ready to open them up

and get the fossil out itself.

I see.

-So it's got lots of layers? - All sorts of--

-They're coatings? -Yes. Coatings.

To protect it from shock. Because it's easily breakable.

And another reason why Gnatalie was so difficult to get out.

And just by looking at the detail on the rock,

you can tell this is bone, and you can tell this is bone.
