All parties are innocent until proven guilty.
The situation now, it's the worst it's ever been.
A scene of carnage at the international airport
in Istanbul, Turkey.
The bad guys have shrunk the world.
And so we need to find people
who are different than other people
to be FBI special agents.
I provide a lot of energy. I have that curiosity.
If you look at me on the street,
you'd never know I'm an FBI agent
and I speak Arabic.
I think what we bring with us is, like, new ideas,
new creative techniques.
It is now gonna be their fight and it is painfully real.
Located 36 miles outside of Washington D.C.,
and situated over 547 acres
within a massive Marine base in northeast Virginia,
is the FBI Academy.
It is where young men and women go to become special agents
and intelligence analysts in today's FBI.
FBI! Search warrant!
Open the door!
Inside the bureau, it is known simply as Quantico.
It's so intimidating being down here at Quantico.
Coming here, going through the agent process,
it just seems larger than life.
Since J. Edgar Hoover opened its doors in 1972,
it has become home to one of the largest
and most comprehensive crime labs in the world.
And the FBI's elite hostage rescue team
is headquartered there.
When's the fight over?
When we say it is.
There's just so much to learn,
'cause you're talking about Hogan's Alley
and you're talking about firearms training
and defensive tactics.
Short combination. Keep it simple.
Jab, cross. Maybe jab, cross, hook.
Moving in and out, control the distance.
You may have gotten, like, three to four hours
of sleep a night, just because there's...
drinking from the fire hose, basically.
You know, there's just so much to learn.
The DIOG allows you to make a warrantless arrest,
and we leave it to your sound judgment.
What I've told you since we got here.
We hire you because you have sound judgment.
This was always a dream of mine, and now that I'm here,
it's... I mean, it's surreal.
You getting ready to see Mommy?
- Yeah. - Yeah?
You excited?
Who's that?
- Mommy! - My little girl!
Come here!
- Oh, my goodness! - Mommy!
Oh, how are you baby?
- Hi. - Hi.
You look so cute. Yeah? Okay.
New agent trainee Julie Irene
has spent the last 20 weeks away from home,
seeing her family only every other week.
Her husband, Kevin Coughlin, knows the routine well.
He is a special agent in the New York office.
She... all day, all she's been talking about
is coming to see Mama.
All day, all I've been talking about
is coming to see her, so...
We got to the hotel to check in,
she's like, "We gotta go,
we gotta go, we gotta go, let's go!"
She's really good at saying fun things, like,
"Mommy, you came back for me," and I'm just like, "Ugh."
You know, knowing that I have to come back.
And it's just been a challenge but it's so wonderful
being together right now.
The FBI receives over 20,000 applicants a year
for approximately 500 new agent vacancies.
But one area where the bureau recruits heavily is cyber.
The New York office Cyber Division is the largest
cyber investigative division in the FBI,
so as you can imagine, we're very busy.
Ari Mahairas is the special agent
in charge of cyber in Special Ops.
Here at the FBI, we've strengthened
our cyber capabilities,
much in the same way we enhanced our intelligence capabilities
after the September 11 attacks.
But the cyber threat, being a threat
that recognizes no border and is global, as we all know it,
is becoming more sophisticated and more difficult to address.
FBI CYBER TASK FORCE
I don't want you out on the street.
Get everybody out of here.
We know that countries
have their intelligence officers on the ground,
trying to gather intelligence
that has taken place since World War II.
What has happened with the advent of cyber
is the ability to do that very work virtually.
When you first start working cyber investigations,
you realize how prevalent the crime is.
Today's FBI is hunting criminals
in a borderless arena.
They hide in the shadows and behind keyboards,
breaking into our infrastructure...
The computer system that controls the dam was hacked.
Iranian hackers were behind the attack.
Stealing secrets and financial information.
Federal prosecutors say some of the nation's biggest banks
and financial firms have been hit
by the largest computer hack of its kind.
Influencing elections.
They were confident the Russian government
at the highest level tried to affect the outcome
of the U.S. election.
But if the average, everyday citizen
believes they are immune, they are mistaken.
Authorities say this man was spying on Miss Teen USA.
He broke into her computer, remotely turned on her webcam,
and watched her most intimate moments.
This happened to me in high school
and it can happen to anybody.
In 2014, for just $40,
anyone with a computer could purchase
a black market software program called Blackshades.
The malicious piece of malware allowed users
with little or no technical skills
the ability to take over someone else's computer,
including their webcams.
You don't have to write your own code
and write your own scripts to do these things.
You can buy them.
Several members of Cyber
have advanced computer skills.
But the division makes sure that experienced investigators
are on every squad.
All right, everybody. Routine surveillance today.
Our primary focus and mission today
is to observe the activity that's gonna take place and...
Special Agent Pete Balias
will be conducting surveillance
of Uzbekistani national Vyacheslav Khaimov of Brooklyn.
The FBI is targeting Khaimov
for an arrest in the coming days.
His apprehension will hopefully coincide
with the takedown of two other individuals,
a Russian male and an Uzbekistani female,
both in Thailand.
All three are part of a malware scheme,
stealing personal banking information
from individuals online.
"Malware" is short for "malicious software."
If your computer gets infected with malware,
it's kind of running and looking for you
to go to any website that you would enter
a username and password.
The bad guys can collect that information
and try to use it to make some sort of profit.
Hey, everybody, just be advised
he's in location and ready to go.
Because of the logistical challenges
involved in a multi-nation operation,
the Brooklyn subject must be kept track of 24/7
in the days leading up to the takedown.
All right, buddy, where are you?
I got him, Pete.
Is that a confirmation?
We have our bad guy?
Yeah, confirrmed.
Just see if the guy gets into a cab
or if he ducks into a subway or what he ends up trying to do.
The target looks to be hailing a cab.
All right, which cab is he jumping into?
The car or the SUV?
Do you want me to get a read of the plate?
Yeah, roger that. Just grab it if you can.
I got visual on him.
Where are you gonna go?
Supervisory Special Agent Mitch Thompson is leading
the briefing for the arrest of Uzbekistani national
Vyacheslav Khaimov.
This is a takedown that's starting tomorrow,
once Thailand arrests their individuals.
Our individual here in Brooklyn, Vyacheslav Khaimov,
is a coconspirator who has received
over $200,000 of victim money that we know about.
When we get to the premises,
we're going to affect the arrest of Khaimov,
and then we're going to transport him
back to 26 Fed for processing.
The FBI has sent agents from the New York
and Charlotte field offices to Thailand
to arrest the Russian male and Uzbekistani female
located there.
Once they're secured,
agents here in the city will move on Khaimov.
Until then, Pete and the arrest team can do nothing but wait.
