We can't not talk about the Olympics. The most memorable is the game against Japan.

We'll do our best to beat Japan. Fighting!

During our match against Japan, Kim Yeon-kyung turn the table around and beat Japan.

Does it feel different to face other countries versus Japan?

It's very different. I played for the Japan before so I am close to Japan members too.

But if we meet before the match, we don't greet much because of competitiveness. It's different to go against other countries.

Seriously, during the Korea vs Japan match, the viewing rate went up to 30%.

I started watching volleyball because of Kim Yeon-kyung.

Me too, me too.

I love how she plays.

Even if they lose a point, she gathers and encourages all the team members.

The disappointing thing for me was that I saw the game against Netherlands.

It touched me how even when we were losing,

you tried to bring the mood up and move forward.

When I think back,

this advancement match to quarterfinals was disappointing,

but I am even more sad about 4 years ago.

This kind of opportunity is hard to come by.

During London Olympics, Kim Yeon-kyung was appraised as the best athlete.

Picking the MVP from a team that got 4th place is unheard of.

It's the first time that an athlete from our country received the MVP award.

We went on steady from 1st set. (4 years later Rio Olympics)

Kim Yeon-kyung was responsible for the offense.

Kim Mi-jin's serves were powerful, but...

The most basic receiving wavered.

Kim Yeon-kyung worked hard to win the 3rd set, but...

It was sad to lose before quarterfinals. How were you feeling?

I was really sad. I'm not the type to cry easily.

We gathered around in like a little meeting.

I said, "You guys worked really hard."

And at that moment, I remembered all the time we put in.

I started to cry a little and all the members were shocked.

And they started crying too.

Sook is going to cry!

I'm not crying. -Your eyes so moist.

It's because Kim Yeon-kyung got teary eyed.

Sook is very soft-hearted.

If someone I am talking to is strong, I become strong too.

But if they show their soft side, I become soft too.

I cry every 4 years because of Olympics. After saving up all the tears.

She's really charismatic. She's cool. We are same age right now.

How did you fall for volleyball in the beginning?

I didn't really know volleyball, but I loved any sports.

My older sister played volleyball here first.

So I would come here often while she played

sports, and I would pick up balls for them.

I desired to play too, so I told my mom.

Then I started playing in the elementary school.

I feel like you got many attention from the beginning.

Were you a rising star even then?

I was short, which might sound weird.

I wasn't yet 160cm during middle school.

Shorter than I was!

I wasn't put in the games. -You were short for a volleyball player.

I would play as a sub and go in during player exchange.

Didn't you want to quit at that point? Since you didn't grow during middle school.

I thought about quitting when I went up to middle school.

I was pondering if I should do a different sport because I love sports.

I was thinking about soccer.

I said I wanted to go different route but my former teachers told me not to.

Coach Kim Dong-ryul!

He said I have big hands, feet, and long legs so he thought I would grow.

He recommended me to continue volleyball.

When your height was only 160cm? -Yes.

I must have shown potential then. The basic techniques were good apparently.

If you quit then,

Our team couldn't even dream of going to Olympics

and say that 4th place is disappointing.

If there was no coach who believed in your future,

you wouldn't be on this court today.

I'm grateful. -He saw into the future.

You didn't grow until middle school.

Don't you have to have certain height and skill to even join a team?

At the time at my middle school, my friends did really well.

I wasn't good but we went around winning all the competitions.

Many high schools casted my friends to come to their school.

They made it so that if they have to go, I would have to go too.

Who was the best player at the time?

She's on a team right now, and she went to the Olympics with me. You know Kim Soo-ji.

We know her!

She's Kim Soo-ji. We graduated elementary, middle, and high school together.

She was an ace during elementary school.

In middle and high school too. -She was always an ace.

It's incredible how the now great Kim Yeon-kyung went to high school because of everyone else.

That's right.

The only thing that I could have done was being a receiver,

so I always practiced receiving.

She was always targeted for being short when she was little.

She practiced receiving so much.

Despite her physique, she was able to be such great offense and defense player.

In high shcool, I reached 170cm. It's still short.

12th grade senior got injured and the position became available.

So I went in that position and started participating in the games.

And I started growing. - You got taller.

Then when did you start believing that you were good at volleyball?

People started noticing when I was 11th grade.
