Vares – Huhtikuun tytöt
The first 200 lines.
SOLAR FILMS INC. PRESENTS
He seems to be a commitment-phobe.
He changes women like shirts.
He always wears the same old clothes.
And stinks.
You sure you don't want a better man?
He can't just dump me like that.
Looks like he's about to learn a lesson.
A small reminder of how women should be treated.
What kind of reminder?
Miss Ekberg, we'll find out in another session.
Another hundred euros is no problem.
What did you see?
Somebody threw a body in the sea.
Oh no, nothing that heavy.
Maybe just a black eye or something like that.
Err... I'm sorry.
There seems to be some interference... in the network.
I see blood. A nose bleed.
That's what he's begging for.
Please tell me his name.
Vares. A private detective.
VARES THE GIRLS OF APRIL
Hi, Ruuhio.
Why not.
Sure, see you.
BASED ON A NOVEL BY REIJO MÄKI
WRITTEN BY KATARiiNA SOURI
Can you take me to a hotel downtown? - Sure. Hop in.
PRODUCED BY JUKKA HELLE AND MARKUS SELIN
DIRECTED BY LAURI TÖRHÖNEN
Thanks.
Hi. - Hi.
Slow news day?
You need patience if you're looking for news in this town.
And I don't have patience.
It's been quiet for me, too.
I've got work for you. - What? You murdered somebody?
If you don't have new bodies, you have to dig up old ones.
In this case they never found the bodies, so the metaphor is off.
If you know what I mean. - Not at all.
You remember the Girls of April? - Yeah.
Yeah. - Yeah?
They've been in the paper a lot, but the case is still unsolved.
Think about it. 15 years and the rumors are still alive.
I'm sure the trail hasn't gone cold yet.
How am I supposed to find something new?
You don't have to find anything new.
I'm going to write a series of articles -
about the most famous unsolved cases.
You could get background information for me.
Interviews with friends and family, rumors, etc.
An easy job, right?
What are you doing? Are you listening?
You know what this is? - No.
It's the Mound of Venus.
The thing is, easy cases turn complicated -
when women are involved.
These women have been dead a long time.
A completely harmless case. Even for you.
Families don't like it when old wounds are opened.
So what? - "So what?"
You'll open old wounds and people will get emotional.
People love to read about that stuff.
A good private detective will do the job better -
than a journalist like me. - Should I also give them hope?
You can solve the case if you want -
and add a zero to the invoice. - Okay.
Get me a shovel.
Ruuhio gave me a tough nut to crack.
Aino Aaltonen, Kikka Valasranta and Teresa Sundin.
The Girls of April.
A case from 15 years ago that the police should've solved-
had turned into an eternal mystery,
Even though it was hard to think of Ruuhio as a client, -
I felt an unemployed man like me had to accept the challenge.
I had almost forgotten what it was like 15 years ago.
Aino Aaltonen disappeared first.
She was last seen alive on an ordinaryday at 9: 15 p. M.
MASSIVE SEARCH FRUITLESS
An eye witness said-
she was dressed too lightly for the rainy weather.
There hasn't been a confirmed sighting of her since.
A young woman just disappeared into the darkness, -
and that April turned chilly.
ANOTHER STUDENT MISSING
Then Kikka Valasranta disappeared.
The whole city was in a state of alarm.
Young women were afraid to go out at night.
People stayed in and were suspicious of each other.
For once, the bars were empty.
There were rumors.
Everyone knew the girls or someone who knew them.
And before April turned to May, a third young woman vanished.
THIRD MISSING GIRL
Teresa Sundin.
TERESA DIDN'T KNOW OTHER MISSING GIRLS
In May new leads stopped coming in.
The investigation came to a standstill.
Summer came and people had other things to think about.
Fifteen summers followed, -
and people talked less and less about Aino, Kikka and Teresa.
Then they were forgotten.
The police claimed they were still investigating the case.
And of course it was their job, not mine.
The only thing I know for sure -
is that the girls didn't jump into the river from this bridge.
How do you know? - The bridge hadn't been built yet.
How do you know? - The bridge hadn't been built yet.
What did you want to talk about? - C'mon. Long time no see.
Let's have a drink and celebrate.
What's that?
Did you find yourself a man? - C'mon.
Things are great. Really great. You get it?
I found a great lady.
When a hot chick like that proposes to me, what can I do?
What can I do?
Guess where I found her? - Where?
At a hot dog stand.
Who is she? - I'm not telling.
You'll find out at the wedding. - What?
Let's toast to that. - Sure.
I need to tell you something.
I heard someone hired some guys to take care of you.
They want to kill me? - No, just bruises and black eyes.
You know, a little make-up.
Any idea why? Who are these guys?
Gianfranco and Furry Dice.
You'll see.
Gianfranco is a wannabe mafioso from Rimini.
Some local girl brought him to Finland. He's a gigolo.
Who hired them?
Shit. Do I have to hire security?
Oh. Here they are. What a coincidence.
What are you pushing me for?
What the hell is this? - Get down. On the ground!
Get on the ground! - Why?
Hold him down.
Scusa.
What the hell are you doing?
Scusa.
I'm a man of honor. I had to punch you at least once.
Okay, let's go.
Sorry.
Ciao.
Hi. I'm Max.
Hi. Tristan. - Tristan? Okay.
Nice to meet you, Tristan.
You seem a little lonely.
Don't stress. Nobody knows you here.
No one knows anybody here.
Give me a piña colada, please.
You have your own place? - Yeah.
I live here in Turku. - Okay.
Guess what? It's my birthday.
Happy birthday. - Oh, thank you.
Make yourself at home.
I'm glad we met.
Are you from around here? - I was smart enough to leave.
Oh. Where have you been?
Here and there. Mostly in Africa. - Really?
All the way in Africa.
I would love to take a beach holiday in Mombasa.
Oh, I almost forgot. I have a cake.
I want to go to Mombasa.
I've heard so many stories about it.
Did you go to Kenya?
No. I was mostly in Central and Western Africa. - Oh.
What was it like? What were the people like?
It was pure hell. Child soldiers killing each other -
and torturing their families.
That's terrible.
It must have been terrible. - Kill or get killed.
Have you ever... killed...
...killed anyone?
I've lost count.
But you could be my second one.
That's a hell of a cake.
Go ahead, birthday boy. Cut a piece from the tip and eat it.
Quit fluttering about, little humming bird.
Are you a man?
Didn't your dad give you the Y cromosome?
Give me the knife.
There's some testosterone for you.
Do something.
Fight me, defend yourself or flee, at least.
Okay.
In that case I'll have to kill you. - Why?
Well, I won't have to go to a hotel.
But you get to choose.
You want me to cut your throat or -
break your neck?
In this profession, you learn to roll with the punches.
You can calculate the risks, some you can avoid.
Sometimes you can meet a risk on the street.
Lissu Ekberg.
Spending a night with her was a mistake -
and she was the last person I wanted to see.
If I never saw her again, it would be just fine.
It's strange that some women disappear without a trace, and-
