The first 200 lines.

Each year, 200,000 people gather in a small town in Katakai, Niigata

to watch 20,000 rounds of spectacular fireworks light up the night sky.

This film is based on the true story of a young girl who loved fireworks,

and her brother who dedicated his masterpiece to her.

Nagaoka Nishi Hospital

Thank you for everything.

- Congratulations. - Thank you.

Take care, Hana.

Okay.

Not "okay".

Are you all right?. Be careful!

The world's largest firework shell

Look, it's the festival.

The "20's Group"!

Shoushinkai

I'm glad you made it in time.

Hana!

It's so itchy!

I'm home.

Hana!

Um...

Dad.

What is it?.

It's Taro...

When I came home from the hospital, I learned that

my brother had become a social recluse.

Stay out

Gross!

You sounded so girly. Totally out of character!

I thought I'd try being "feminine" for a change.

Impossible!

Your favorite phrase is "holy crap"!

I'm not that bad.

These fireworks are sponsored, not by corporations, but by the townspeople.

They're financed by local individuals and small groups.

Every round of fireworks

bear dedications such as "long life" and "happiness for the family".

Most of the sponsoring groups

are formed by alumni of the local middle schools.

Starting with the 20-year olds,

every age group is represented

right up to the 60-year olds who are celebrating an auspicious year.

Fireworks is their common bond. Isn't that wonderful?.

Each round that is launched

holds special meaning for the sponsor.

Holy crap!

Holy crap?.

Holy crap!

Fireworks from the Heart

I love fireworks!

Welcome back.

Welcome back.

I'm so glad you're better.

Thanks.

Okay! Let's make up for lost time!

It's our turn next year!

Let's make it 100 times better!

It's next year's "20's Club".

- Is Kayo the leader?. - Looks like it.

The first female leader.

She went to our elementary school.

What's wrong?.

I just remembered someone else who's turning 20.

Taro?.

Can I come in?.

Come on, let me in.

Your beloved sister just came home from the hospital.

Taro?.

He wouldn't say a word.

I was afraid of that. You'd think on a day like this...

Idiot!

Okay, let's go with this.

Niigata Prefecture, Ojiya High School

Teachers' Room

Come in.

Shouldn't she be resting at home?.

She insists on eating lunch with her friends.

Please, Mr. Arima!

Well...

I'm fine. I'm full of energy!

Okay, okay.

Sit down.

But you have to go home right after lunch, okay?.

Calm down.

Will you pick her up at 1 pm?.

It looks like Hana will be just fine.

I'm so glad.

Now if only her brother...

I wonder when he's going to come out of his room.

It's been six months.

We have to do something,

or else...

We're almost there.

Thanks.

High School Diploma - Taro Sudo

What are you going to do?.

Have you decided?.

You don't want to go to college or work.

What, then?.

I want to take a break.

I've had a hard time.

A hard time?. All you did was go to school.

Do you know what's it's like to go to school when you're an outcast?.

Don't be so indulgent!

You could have made an effort to make friends.

It's all your fault.

What?.

You made me transfer schools in my last year of middle school!

We had to think of Hana's health.

I'm sick of hearing that.

What have you ever done for me?.

Dear!

Chew your food well. Mom

You ever heard of chewing?.

That was good.

You always eat so fast.

But you never get fat.

You're still on medication?.

Yeah.

I was really shocked.

I went in for anemia and they admitted me right away.

Leukemia doesn't have symptoms. Just anemia and bruising.

We couldn't believe it, either.

You were always so healthy.

But I was a sickly kid.

I was always at the doctor's for asthma.

Oh yeah...

That's why you moved here.

The air's cleaner here.

I was doing really good...

But I guess I'm a weakling.

But you got better.

Yeah. You beat it!

You think?.

With an appetite like that?.

Sudo, go home.

Already?.

She's finished eating.

Were you spying on us?.

Not spying! Just watching over you.

Looks good!

Let's eat together downstairs.

Why don't you answer me?.

Did you forget our rooms were connected?.

Long time, no see.

It's about time.

You never come out.

You haven't been out once since graduation?.

The 20's Club was meeting, you know.

Don't you want to join them?. To launch fireworks?.

Do you hate me that much?.

He completely ignored me.

You have to be patient.

Sudo residence.

It's dad. How are you feeling?.

I'm fine, thank you very much.

That's good.

Stay out

I'll leave your dinner here.

Dad's coming home late.

Again?.

He's working too hard.

I know. He's not getting enough sleep.

It's my fault. All those hospital bills.

You don't need to worry about that.

All of it is my fault.

What are you talking about?.

Let's eat!

What's your dream, mom?.

That was out of the blue!

What is it?.

For all of us to eat dinner together for once.

That would be nice.

One day, I guess.

Taro!

Taro! It's a fire!

Open up! Hurry!

Get out!

I did it!

Smoke bombs are pretty expensive.

I had to get you out somehow.

Wait!

I'm worried about you.

What happened?.

It's just like my buttons.

My life went off track somehow.

Are you trying to be poetic?.

Like you're too cool?.

Oooh, it's chilly!

Let's go somewhere since you're already out.

What for?.

Embarrassed to be seen with your sis?.

Yeah.

So as long as we're not alone, you'd be fine.

Right?.

Come on out!

Hi, Taro.

Let's go!

Where to?.

The usual place?.
