The first 200 lines.

On this episode of The Incredible Dr. Pol...

Holy Moses!

In 30 years...

Easy, easy.

...there's not much Doc hasn't tapped, yanked,

trimmed, or flung.

So when he gets not one, but two never-before-seen cases...

Hey!

I think this is the first guinea pig I'm doing.

...everyone's caught by surprise.

This is very cool that it's a Dr. Pol first.

Meet Dr. Jan Pol.

He's a local legend with over 19,000 clients

and a team that does whatever it takes.

If one of Dr. Pol's longtime clients calls for help...

KNC707 mobile one to base.

...he knows it must be an emergency.

Todd Bean has a big business.

He has a heifer trying to have a calf, and she can't have it.

Hi, sweetie.

A heifer is a cow that hasn't given birth before,

so you'll see complications more often in heifers

than you will other cows.

Let's put a rope on her so she does not surprise us.

So, Charles, watch out, slow down, she is getting nervous.

This first-time mothe may need Dr. Pol's help,

but she certainly doesn't want it.

Come on.

When you see them staring down at you,

looking right at you, ears back,

that's a real warning sign that you got to watch out.

Man! You little witch.

We need to settle her down so we can work on her,

or she might lose her calf.

Like most beef cattle

this heifer is spooked by humans.

You could see she was not easy

and not happy with a cold hand up her butt.

When a cow moves like that,

they can break your arm, they can dislocate it.

The whole secret is expect the unexpected.

Holy cow!

I've never had a cow that jumped like that.

Good thing my dad still has his reflexes.

Undeterred, Doc quickly figures out the problem.

This heifer is having a bull.

A big bull.

There, see that?

Bent elbows again, just like any other heifer.

Many first-time heifers have problems

if the calf is quite large.

When they try to push the calf out,

the elbows of the calves are bending back.

You can get into trouble

when you're trying to pull a calf like that.

You can tear the vaginal wall, you can tear the uterus.

We don't want to pull a live calf and kill the heifer.

The heifer does not straighten out the legs herself.

That you have to do yourself.

Okay, handles for a minute, Charles.

Get it where you want it.

Yeah. There. Okay. Just a second.

Okay.

This one needed both of us on the chains.

- Keep pulling. - Keep pulling?

Yep.

And it was a lot of pulling.

Okay, I'm coming.

I think we can get it. I got this one.

Hang on.

Okay, let her push.

She is doing the work.

Got it.

Stupid bull.

They hate that.

Look at that, see?

Yeah.

Instantly.

Dr. Pol made it just in time.

Another hour of labor, and this bull calf and his mother

might not have survived.

And she is a monster.

Typical organic.

Yeah.

So this went from a potentially disastrous birth

to a relatively easy one.

At least for us, if not for the cow.

So we have a live calf, that's the main thing.

Good.

Dr. Pol returns to the clinic

to find a very unusual patient waiting.

I came to see Dr. Pol today

because I believe my hedgehog has parasites.

Ah, he's a cute guy.

We're a non-discriminatory clinic

here at Pol Veterinary Services.

If you got an animal, and it's not a human being,

we'll see it.

Is his name Sonic?

Ziggy.

I love him. He's fun to play with.

Not very many people have them.

What we got, a little hedgehog?

Yes.

Now he's gonna be a little scared.

These little African hedgehogs are cute.

If you play with them, they will actually be nice to you.

Okay, so what is the problem?

I believe he has parasites, small, red, and black.

Oh, did you bring any?

No, I didn't.

There might be some on him.

There's a good chance.

Take it easy.

Hey.

You can't hold a hedgehog very easily.

It's kind of like a porcupine.

Let's get a piece of paper

and see if there's anything falling off.

Okay, put him right on there. Shake, rattle, and roll.

We were struggling a little bit with old Ziggy on the table.

Quit snortin' at me.

See what I mean?

Oh, there's something right there.

I spotted something.

By the time I spotted it, it was gone.

Right there, you see it?

It's red, and it's got little... Right there.

Yeah.

I saw something in between all the spines.

We looked at it and these were the mites.

Okay, found it, local application.

Yeah.

This is for kittens under five pounds.

They don't make a hedgehog antiparasiticals.

You figure out something that works

for fleas, ticks, and mange.

And that'll take care of it.

Before you do this, everything has to be cleaned.

Yeah.

Put it on,

hopefully you won't have the problem anymore.

I'm feeling very relieved

knowing that this isn't something very serious

and that I can take care of it.

Thanks.

He's a cutie, of course.

Hopefully he'll be back to normal

within the next few days.

You're in my coveralls.

I thought they were kind of big.

Yeah, they definitely are.

I just had a call from Hearty Harvest.

That's the place across from Clay Knob.

And they're going to have a chili cook-off.

They're looking for a judge.

Oh, that'll be good. I don't like chili.

I've cooked for Dr. Pol for over 30 years.

And most of the time,

anything you set in front of him, he will eat.

Have you guys tried this here?

But I know one thing... He hates chili.

I hate chili.

And as long as it is just tasting the chili,

and I don't have to eat the full pot, I'll be fine.

So I think you should.

Yes. Good!

I finally get you to eat chili. Ha, ha.

I have to taste it.

That means I don't eat a lot.

Truth is, I know that beans and Jan don't get along very well.

So I'll probably be the one wishing he wasn't doing the judging.

Coveralls sorted,

father and son head off to Clay Knob Farm,

right across the street from the site of the chili contest.

I've been giving some thought to...

Don't scare me. You been thinking again?

Yeah, I've been giving some thought

to joining the chili cook-off.

I've never entered a cooking contest before, so...

People can take one look at me and realize I like to eat.

What most people don't know, I'm a pretty darn good cook.

I normally can cook my pants off.

Hey, let the best cook win.

Let the best cook win.

For now, chili talk has to be put on the back burner.

A bigger problem is brewing here...

The dairy cows are having trouble conceiving.

The past two times that the vet's been out

in order to check on the cows,

there's only like three out of the eight that were pregnant.

Makes it kind of hard to keep the milk flowing

if you don't have the pregnant cows.

Every day without mil means money down the drain.

How are things going?

Clay Knob's woes lie in its feed.

A farmer's rations is very important

to the health of their cows.

Rations can affect how fertile they are,

how much milk they produce.
