The first 41 lines.
In the dank twilight he climbed the worn and aged stone stairs
ghastly and terrible still was the slowness of his progress.
For climb as he might, the darkness overhead grew no thinner.
He fancied that night had come suddenly upon him.
All at once, he felt his head touch a solid thing
In the darkness he tested the barrier.
He pushed the slab using both hands.
There was a thin moonlight revealed above.
The slab was the trap-door of an aperture
leading to some chamber,
but it was completly void.
Completely?
Only on the stone walls he noticed peculiar figures
drawn with white chalk.
He turned back,
about to return the same way he came here,
but right behind him,
there she was - the raven-haired one
with her eyes glowing red -
MADAM DE BLOIS!
Max, stop scaring your brother.
Go and chop some wood.
Those are just old women's tales.
Madame and Sieur are no witches.
Then, why would they wear black all the time?
Because Madame is very sad,
for she doesn't have such a beutiful child as you are.
Be nice or I'll send you to serve her.
Jan, come here!
Good morning.
Are you going to mass with your mother?
Aren't you, Mrs. Kalinová?
It's way too far for me.
You know, we used to have a church here.
But it was a long time ago.
It was such a beautiful church.
But only ruins are left of it now.
When Sieur De Blois came here
he couldn't stand God's presence.
It's all bcause of his dame,
she's much worse than him.
