Today is June 14th, 2005.

Tuesday.

Here in L.A., the sun is just beginning to peek

through the scattering marine layer.

Whatever you‘re thinking,

Bastille Day is still a month away.

Use that.

I was going to use that to shower, but whatever.

You can use it to shower later.

It‘s, like, imagine trying to get a cow in a--

in a pickup truck.

A dead cow. Yeah, I‘ll bet.

It‘d be all day

dragging that damn thing in there.

I remember when I was cleaning

up in... Bogus Basin, Idaho.

In the summer we‘d clean brush

to work off our ski pass.

And we found a bloated cow

in the creek.

We had these sledgehammers and pickaxes and--

not sledgehammers.

We had pickaxes. "Pulaskis," they‘re called.

One side is sharp and the other is a blade,

so you can dig in the ground and clear brush, right?

So this cow was bloated, and I wanted to pop it.

So I hit the thing as hard as I could

with this pickaxe.

And that thing bounced and almost tore my arms out.

Bounced back!

And we were trying to pop this cow

for, like, a half-hour.

And, um...

And it was farting and, oh, man, it was foul.

Yeah.

That‘s in Philadelphia, too?

Yeah. There‘s all kinds of--

Sounds like a beautiful city.

Yeah, it‘s beautiful.

It was probably...

maybe not the last place I wanted to go,

but one of the last places I ever wanted to go.

Now see, this was just when hippies were--

You know, there was--

It was before cops were pigs.

And really, all I ever knew about Philadelphia

was American Bandstand-- ity.

Dick Clark, you know, and the American Bandstand

that was filmed in Philadelphia.

Even though I looked a little strange,

there wasn‘t any problem.

And I was walking one night-- I told you this story-- with a stick.

It was a walking stick but it had nails,

like four-inch nails,

driven through this one-by-three,

all different directions.

And this was a--

Like I said, if you did meet someone there at night,

it would be-- there‘s nobody around.

So I‘m walking through this kind of tunnel

where it‘s built over the top,

steel risers and all this stuff,

and...fwooh!

This cop comes right up next to me.

"What do you got there?" he says.

And I showed him.

He said, "Good for you, bud," and...fyoo!

It was always the chance

that violence could take place.

Now guess what.

Today I‘ve been meditating 32 years.

Never missed a meditation, and it‘s my anniversary.

I practice transcendental meditation

as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

And...

the thing about it is,

it‘s a personal thing,

but...

I really think for every person it‘s--

would be so good, but for artists,

it‘s a chance to dive into pure creativity.

That‘s where pure creativity lives--

in the unified field, the absolute pure being.

It‘s an ocean of creativity.

And it would be so good, I think,

for people to visit that

and infuse that.

There‘s other qualities to the absolute pure being,

and those are bliss, intelligence, consciousness,

universal love, peace,

power, and energy.

And it‘s, to me, money in the bank.

And I love my meditation. I love it.

I don‘t want to not do it.

I love doing it.

never really knew

that it was possible

to be an artist in a modern world.

I just never figured that you could do that.

Forget being the best of anything;

that‘s the fruit of the action.

You do the work, they say,

for the doing, not the fruit.

You can never really know

how it‘s going to turn out in the world,

but you know if you enjoy doing it.

Ideas start flowing

and you start getting excited about stuff.

Then you‘re having a great time in the doing,

and that‘s what it‘s all about.

If you don‘t enjoy the doing,

then do something else.

My first camera was a Canon EOS-1

that I got just before The Elephant Man.

And then I started taking pictures,

and I didn‘t ever take hardly any pictures before that.

Sometimes you‘ll say, well, we were just starting to take some pictures

and wanted to get some close-ups...

and that‘s when we saw the finger and the body.

You could put the ISO high if you want, David.

So it‘s...

If you want a quicker shutter speed.

Yeah, try one like that.

Because it might be getting--

Because I might have jiggled.

Yeah.

See, I‘ve never shot digital in a factory, ever.

And, as you know-- Because I--

We‘ve-- We have to quit at 2:30 with film.

Because of light? Yeah.

I mean, if you had the tripod, then--

I could take longer-- I know, I know.

But you know what I mean.

This way, you just set different film speed.

You still have to keep it slow--

I understand. Yeah.

There‘s really not much good

about a bright factory.

Um, you want mood,

so you get a gray sky,

a low ceiling, and some rain,

and cold as the backdrop to these factories.

It‘s really starting to get some mood.

And what is cool about them is the details

of how electricity enters and exits,

and how the windows

are formed and broken,

and how nature has gone to work

on the walls and the façade.

The overall design of the factories

sometimes is just incredible.

Bitching, huh? Yeah, man.

Isn‘t that a beauty? Mm.

Oh, my God.

Just look at that violet there,

and there‘s that yellow.

Yeah.

It‘s unbelievable.

Isn‘t that a beauty?

I like that metal on the left,

that stick or whatever the hell it is.
