Into the Final Lap

The trio negotiate City Hall corner.

They're almost done with the peninsula section for a fourth lap.

The 885 car has fallen back a place after a failed overtake on the 1 car,

and almost as if taking up the baton from his fellow rookie,

the 86 is now in position to strike and pass the 1!

Don't look away, folks.

Since a fire was lit under Katagiri Kanata, he's shot through the field

with the precision of a sniper.

Will the former champ manage to prevent the red bullet from hitting its mark?

Katagiri Kanata has this uncanny knack that must frighten other drivers.

What in the world did we just see, Akiyama-san?

A surprise, for sure.

I never even considered that kind of maneuver.

He took advantage of an inherent weakness in European supercars.

There's a pronounced height difference in the roads on that second hairpin,

meaning a car with lower ground clearance can't take the shortest line.

The 86 isn't that much higher off the ground, but relative to the 911 GT3,

it had enough to daringly cut inside.

The chassis struck the road. Will that be a problem?

I even saw sparks.

I don't think it'll be a problem.

And onto the back straightaway!

This is the stretch with the second-highest recorded speeds.

Can the 1 car with its superior horsepower come back at him?

This stretch until the Nushiya corner allows them to open the throttle,

but due to the undulating nature of the road, there's only one ideal line.

I'm very impressed with Katagiri Kanata.

He's positioning his car perfectly to stop the 1 from getting past.

I think we can now be sure that the 86 has received a substantial upgrade

under the hood for this third race.

Otherwise, no matter how perfect his line was,

he wouldn't be able to fend off the 1 car on this back straight.

and now he's showing the experience of a seasoned racing driver.

Nice. The stronger the enemy, the more satisfying it is to beat 'em.

Oishi in the 3 is seventh. Yanagida in the 6 is eighth.

Maezono's 13 car is in ninth. Sakamoto's 14 is in tenth.

Aiba in the 9 runs 11th.

Yashio's 12 is in 12th. Kitahara in the 18 car is 13th.

Taylor in the 8 is 14th.

And Otani's 7 car in 15th.

These 15 sprinters will now go flat-out...

to gain as much ground as they can.

I'd like to ask about something that's been on my mind, Akiyama-san.

Is there a reason the lights in the three tunnels have been turned off?

This might be a good chance to explain.

MFG as a racing series was originally started

with the intention of reviving areas affected by the eruption of Mount Fuji.

I'm sure fans are aware that a significant portion of the proceeds

is donated to the areas that were hardest hit.

The natural disaster resulted in a protracted period

where infrastructure shut down, leaving residents without electricity for a time.

Shutting off the lights in the tunnel is a reminder of those events

by MFG's organizers.

It's also for this very same reason

that all five MFG courses include hazards that reflect the Fuji eruption.

I can see why the organizing committee chose you as a spokesman, Akiyama-san.

You have a wealth of fascinating insights into their vision.
