Coming up, the Hunt for Australia's Greatest Hoons.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, oi, oi!
Hello. I'm Pauly Fenech.
Normally I hunt bogans,
but I'm on a special expedition in the nation's capital.
I'm looking for a subspecies of Australian
that we've not heard much about in the media.
I'm on the hunt for a species of Australian
who religiously adores the motor vehicle,
a species of Australian who participates in burnouts.
To some, they're known as car enthusiasts,
but they are most commonly known by this four-letter word.
I've chosen to go on an expedition
in search of the Great Australian Hoon.
I've assembled a special team -
Shazza Jones,
Kev the Kiwi
and because many hoons have an ethnic flavour
Rocky and Habib will help us
track multicultural motorheads.
This team is on a hoon hunting expedition
and when hunting hoons there is no greater concentration
than the annual event...
It's known as the almighty Summernats.
Tits or rubber, one or the other!
Tits or rubber, one or the other!
Summernats and the Hunt for the Great Australian Hoon!
If you've never heard of Summernats
you're obviously not an automotive fanatic.
Summernats! Yeah, mate!
For the past 25 years in the hot January sun,
this car-loving species
congregates in this large sports stadium.
They camp, they show off,
they flash various parts of their bodies
and of course they do burnouts.
Whoop, whoop, whoop!
Whoop, whoop, whoop!
Ba-bup-bup-bup-bup!
It's a gathering of show cars,
performance vehicles,
subwoofers of mass destruction...
Subwoofer!
..and as much fun as you can have on four wheels.
Fuckin' Summernats!
Now, as well as credentials in boganology...
Hah! Hey, bro.
..a not well publicised fact
is that I am a hoon anthropologist.
Is there anyone here who puts their hand up
as being a hoon in general?
Hoon in general? Me!
Me. Yep. Yeah, why not?
And when pursuing the Great Australian Hoon,
a successful expedition must include
people who participate in this glorious car activity.
An expert on the hoon culture
is an old friend, Marty.
In previously expeditions,
he taught Shazza how to achieve a burnout.
He was competing in this year's Summernats
and look at the vehicle he turned up in.
Marty is such a great bogan/hoon.
You know, he crosses both cultures.
I love the way that he started with one grass vehicle
and now he's graduated to another.
A grass limo!
That's one of the great aspects of the hoon -
the never-say-die when it comes to building a project
and seeing it through
and then destroying it completely at Summernats.
Such a great ideology.
Let's go, driver!
Hey, you done a good job, brother. Cheers.
Oh, yeah, or shake. Whatever.
'Cause you don't drink that much, bro.
Cheers, bro. Yeah.
In Marty's grass limousine,
it was time to do some reconnaissance.
Ahead of me, minor burnouts.
The revving of the engine, the flexing.
What a fascinating culture this hoon culture is.
Shazza began her mission
by seeking out bogan hoon iconography.
Fuckin' show that off. Have a go at that!
That's a fuckin' purler right there.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
She was shown an Aussie Jesus complete with thongs.
He's got his thongs on. That's Aussie.
"I love beer."
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, oi, oi!
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
Suddenly our bogan queen
then discovered a very interesting vehicle.
What's your name, darlin'? My name's Sarah.
Can you show us a few fuckin' sexy moves or what?
Sure. Of course I can. Alright, go on.
It's a tradition of the Summernats
for females on the back of vehicles
to garner the male attention.
Shazza was then invited
to partake in the ritual of the pole.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!
Oi, oi, oi!
It was a shaky start for our newest team members
Rocky and Habib.
Due to both losing their licences,
these were the only vehicles they were allowed to drive.
Hey, dickhead. Piss off, mate.
Piss off! What's up?
And initially they were extremely distracted
by females in the vicinity.
Hey, excuse me. Like, do you root?
Are you like a door?
I wish, like, you were a door so I could slam you all night!
Oh-ho!
But finally the ethno hoon hunters got to work.
You're a fake, mate. Nah, mate.
You're a fake! Turn around.
Look at this, mate. What's this?
Get out of here! Oh, my God!
Kev, Marty and myself were still doing laps
on a part of the event known as Tuff Street.
It's a long, slow lap
where you get to show off the vehicle that you've created.
It is fair to say that some perhaps politically incorrect...
..behaviour does go with the hoon culture.
Alright!
Hey, fuckin' right in the pussy!
Now, there is one statement
that you'll always often hear at Summernats
and it goes like this.
Now, forgive me, females,
but it is part of the culture of this event.
Tits or rubber, one or the other!
"Tits or rubber, one or the other."
Tits or rubber, one or the other!
By this, the hoon is saying
the female must either flash her breasts in the car that she's in
or the vehicle must do a burnout.
Due to the 'Grass Limo's lack of burnout ability...
..on command...
Tits or rubber, one or the other!
..Marty had no option but to organise this.
Back on the 'Pole Mobile',
Shazza investigated this phenomenon further.
Tits out for the boys! Come on!
How many times a day do you get asked to get your tits out?
I've lost count. You've lost count? Yeah.
Yeah, yeah!
You've got a beautiful woman on your bloody thing here,
but still the boys wanna see tit.
What is it about tits
that makes them so important to you fellas?
It's what we're born to do, suck tits, isn't it?
There you go. Fair enough.
I just think boobs and burnouts go well together, you know?
A bit of beer on top and you've got the trifecta.
Boobs, burnouts and beer.
That's what it's all about, boys.
Tits or rubber, one or the other!
The crowd wanted to prove they weren't sexist.
Get your tits out. Get your tits out, Kev!
So here's something for the girls.
Titties!
Whoo!
"Never mind my tits. Show us ya dick."
That's exactly right, fellas.
A point of discussion in this automotive world
is whether somebody will term themselves
'car enthusiast' or 'hoon'.
'Car enthusiast' sounds like something
that the authorities made up
'cause they didn't wanna use 'hoon', doesn't it?
Well, as a hoonologist,
obviously I'm gonna go with 'hoon'
and there's something a little cheeky about the word 'hoon',
and I think that's Australian.
I think that's part of the Australian nature to be cheeky.
To do burnouts, to make noise.
Summernats!
Aside from the cars...
..the most important event at this automotive fiesta...
Guys, make some noise!
..is the Miss Summernats competition.
C-grade promo girls from around the country
compete for this illustrious title.
I don't wanna talk to the girls now
'cause I don't wanna make 'em nervous,
but, uh, just have a perve while they're waiting.
G'day, girls.
OK, obviously what they're looking for is long legs
and, like, short, short fuckin' things.
There were parallels between the girls and the cars -
some immaculate and pristine...
Have a look!
