Roll call is usually to try to find out

the different things that are going on out there

that we may encounter,

that we need to be cognizant of.

The more we know about what's happening out there,

the safer we are.

for most of my life.

I got involved in the movie business

and was down in the South,

and the late, great Harry Lee, who was the sheriff

of Jefferson Parish, asked me then to demonstrate

martial arts weapons retention

to some of the police officers down here,

and he was so pleased with what I was doing,

he asked me to come onto the force

and be one of his cops.

>> It can be very dangerous out on these streets,

but nothing is more important to me

than protecting the people of this parish

and honoring the name of Harry Lee.

That's one of the many reasons

why I'm willing to put myself in harm's way

and be a good cop.

We go into the worst neighborhoods

and try to make our presence felt

and step on the crime as best we can.

illegal activity along here.

So we're just cruising to make sure everybody's all right.

As a lifelong practitioner of the martial arts,

we're constantly trained to remain calm

in the face of adversity and danger.

When the world is speeding by for others,

I see things for what they are.

A cock of the head,

a foot planted forward or back,

a flick of the wrist:

They all tell me something.

Whether somebody is going to fight,

pull a gun, or run.

It's a carjacking,

And we're trying to catch the perpetrator.

He jumps out the car with a .270 winchester rifle,

one live round in the chamber.

We had to taze him because he continued to resist.

The weapon has been recovered,

and we're going to do some dispo checks

on the weapon and the vehicle.

>> The suspect allegedly took the car at gunpoint

from a female.

One of our unmarked units got behind the vehicle,

and the subject started running.

>> I must have passed 37 cars and that big truck.

Big silver had him.

>> The subject came out the car with this gun,

but he dropped it eventually.

It will go through most vests,

and a big enemy of the police.

>> This was in the back of his pants

when they pulled it out earlier.

>> I pulled it out of his pocket.

This look like Jason's.

It's a very, very simple marking

of somebody who's fixing to do bad things.

>> Let's go.

Let's roll. We got work to do.

>> The way we look at it is, every gun we get off the street

is a gun that can't be used to kill us, the police,

or other innocent people who would be robbed,

carjacked.

These guys don't have guns just for fun.

They have them to use them.

Once a year, every officer has to qualify

with firearm in order to use their pistol on duty.

And the next week is Alex's test.
