It's Friday night, and usually, there's still a lot of activity

until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning.

In this next hour or so that we're out,

we just want to try to really make our presence known,

and if there's any guys out there

committing aggravated assaults

or burglaries or drug slinging, we want to know about it.

We want to get up.

>> This is predominantly black.

It's new houses they built back here.

>> This is where they had that bad shooting that time?

>> Yeah.

>> Things here can turn violent fast and without warning.

That's why we need to stay sharp and focused.

Awareness is the key to survive.

If you can't anticipate an attack...

you can't defend against it.

>> You know him?

>> No, but they way he looked at us,

he gonna be wanted.

>> Well, he was looking at the lights too,

looking at us in the uniform.

>> When you come up here, take a left

and put the spotlight in that fence.

>> 10-4.

That guy's got a gun. He just put it in his pocket.

We're gonna jump out now.

This could get ugly.

>> All right, them running. They running.

>> See if we can catch 'em this way.

He dropped his cell phone with his picture in it.

He also dropped a gun, a 95g.

>> So he didn't have his gun in his hand.

He had it tucked... >> I don't know.

After he slipped down here and he jumped the fence,

that's when all the went flying.

>> Alex, they got units in the area.

Get us a 'scrip. >> 5'3", about 140.

We seen might be the suspect, and, you know, if we're lucky,

we may be able to I.D. Him off of that photograph.

>> He's gonna be 5'3", about 140.

>> Colonel for tonight

is calling in the suspect's description

and requesting a crime scene technician

yo come here to scene and check out the gun.

>> So somebody got to stay here with the gun,

but some of us should be able to keep looking.

>> We're gonna play the area for a little while.

They got a few more police cars playing the perimeter,

and we're gonna see if we can try to find him again.

Police. Anybody back here?

Anybody back here? Police.

What about in the truck?

>> It's like they vanished, man.

You got units on both sides of the street.

There's a lot of abandoned houses, wooded lots.

>> Had a hit there. >> All three of 'em.

All four of 'em have it.

>> Somebody attempted to fire the weapon.

>> Can you get the serial number real quick?

>> We're calling in the gun right now

just to make sure that it's not stolen.

>> How many rounds we have? >> Four.

>> Four live rounds.

We're gonna do a report on it.

They'll have it.

They'll send it to the lab for prints and for DNA,

and if anything comes back,

we can take the person that matches the prints or the DNA,

put him in a lineup, show him to Captain Norman,

see if he can identify him,

and we'll go get a warrant for him.

It's as easy as that.

>> And that's one less firearm that another police officer

may have to face under different circumstances,

which could be deadly.

>> How many thousands of times there's a police officer

gone up on a stop and all the sudden,

they break out and start shooting first?

>> Right.

At any given moment,

you just don't know what lies ahead,

and when they armed, it makes it even more dangerous.

>> Right.

Last night was a good reminder

of how anybody can die anytime, anyplace,

and how you always got to be on your toes.

When you're chasing people with guns,

you've got to figure out a way to take them down

without you getting hurt or anybody else.

I've studied the Marshall Arts most of my life,

so I have a lot of confidence in myself,

but I really worry about my own team members sometimes,

so today I'm gonna see them a little course

in the Marshall Arts

and teach these boys some new tricks.

I know my team members can arrest just about anybody.

What I'm concerned about is if somebody's flying at you

with punches and kicks.

Many of police officers have tasers, batons, firearms...

in the worst case scenario,

many of them are forced to have to actually

defend themselves with whatever they have,

and that may be just fighting with their hands and their feet.

>> And you get a lot of times that, you know,

"I'm gonna arrest you."

And then next thing you know, he's coming like this,

so you got to get like this too.

>> They're gonna be trying

to punch your face in and grab your gun.

I'm one of the highest-ranking Aikido teachers in the world.

This young gentleman's gonna help me demonstrate

some Aikido techniques.

If somebody starts to punch... just kind of punch and come...

I want you to get behind him.

Take that chin,

press it up against your shoulder,

and you can pop this

or get him under any kind of control you want.

Aikido is written "the way of harmony."

It's an art based on blending with the attacker's force

and being able to redirect it to neutralize your opponent.

So when he gets those hands up, I want to be like this,

and from here, this'll get his attention real quick.

You feel that?

>> You under his mouth or his neck?

>> Either way. >> Okay.

>> See how I put that chin right up against my...

slap if it hurts.

You see?

The other thing you can always do is get the fingers,

and I just want you guys to feel this,

Just this kind of thing.

>> Yes, sir.

>> You feel that? You feel that?

They will not resist this.

>> You know?

Now, keep in mind, when somebody goes down,

you still got to deal with them,

because you haven't searched him yet.

We can flip him like that.

From here, you got to be able to turn him over

so that he can't go for a weapon.

>> He's quick.

When he moves,

he's to the side in the blink of an eye

and he's got your arm in some pretzel maneuver.

I mean, it's either,

you comply or he breaks your arm.
