I'm Kim Hyung Suk, songwriter...

and famous for being terrible at recognising singers' voices.

I just introduced them as "Kim Hyung Suk and his friends",

so have the three of you known each other for a long time?

24 years since I first met him.

It's been quite a while then. - I first met him when I was five.

You mean your son. - Yes.

What about Yoon Kwon? How long have you known him?

I think it has been about 15 years.

I started auditioning when I was 16.

The last time I auditioned was when I was 19...

and that was when I met Hyung Suk for the first time.

Luckily, I passed the audition and we've been friends since then.

Hyung Suk, what made you decide to work in pop music?

The first song I wrote was for the late Mr Kim Kwang Seok.

He majored in composing classical music.

The name of the song was "To You",

and I gave it to him.

I guess they liked the piano sample of the song,

and the arranger asked me to play the piano for the song recording.

How old were you? - I was...

about 20 or 21.

This was around 1989 or 1990.

But I'd never played in a band...

nor had I had any experience, like practising with a metronome.

As you know, classical music is mostly free tempo.

So I messed up...

the whole recording.

I was outside the studio upset and heaving a sigh,

when Kwang Seok came up to me...

and advised me to look for a different career path.

He said I should decide before it was too late.

Really?

In fact, Kwang Seok was the sweetest person.

He was just being honest. It was his sincerest advice.

He said that because he was worried for you.

So I went home and bought...

a sequencer and began practising with it.

You started over. - Yes...

and I began...

playing in a band.

Sometimes a sharp reprimand or constructive criticism...

can help a person get back on their feet.

I think it was the biggest motivation for me.

It motivated you. - Yes.

Even if I gave up, I had not much else to do...

and even though...

what Kwang Seok said was meant to console me,

I think it made me really pull my socks up...

for my career.

I will tell you briefly about his songs after this...

for those of you who don't know.

I've worked with many great singers which was a huge blessing...

like these two friends here.

If Hui Yeol or I had sung these songs,

I know what you mean. - Yes.

There are three songwriters in Korea known for their terrible singing.

Jung Seok Won of 015B, Yu Hui Yeol and I.

So we need to be grateful to our vocalists at all times...

except for when we are asleep. - He's right.

We should be grateful as long as we are alive and breathing.

But to receive a song from Hyung Suk at the time...

it wasn't as if anyone could go and get a song from you.

It was amazing. - I waited in a long queue as well.

that the two of you wish you could have sung yourselves?

In fact, I heard "I Believe" in the recording studio...

so I knew it was a good song before it was released.

I was glad to get to sing it at "I Am a Singer"...

and personally, there is "Two of Us Forever".

Park Jin Young's song? - Yes.

I sang the English version once...

and I loved it.

The melody was a good fit for a pop arrangement as well.

Hyung Suk can play the piano right here, he is a pianist.

What do you think is Yoon Kwon's biggest advantage?

He doesn't exaggerate his emotions.

I'd say his voice is like rice, as you can eat it over and over again.

You never get sick of rice. - Right.

I think that appeal applies to Yoon Kwon's voice as well.

What about Jo Han?

Jo Han is from the US...

so understandably his diction is somewhat unclear.

Even so...

Yes, I was so shocked when I heard his song for the first time.

I had a lot of people around me at the time...

and they didn't think to correct me and let me carry on like that.

When we recorded the song, "Holding on to the End of Tonight",

I actually liked Jo Han's diction.

An RnB song doesn't sound so good when the diction is very clear cut.

It was a gamble on my side as other singers didn't do that.

In the end, his diction was not a problem.

His vocal tone and techniques...
