The first 199 lines.

Hello, it's nice to meet you.

Welcome to Sketchbook, everyone.

I'm Yu Hui Yeol.

I can see your faces from up here. You all are smiling now.

But we barely smile outside the studio these days.

Nowadays, there's a lot of stuff going on.

So at least for today, we hope that...

this show will help you relax and have fun...

with good music and stories.

Let me introduce our first guest singer.

Our first guest...

has spent half of his life with music.

That means he's quite old.

He was even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records...

with a high record of album sales that we can't even imagine now.

And you know...

those TV programs where you have to guess who it is...

when people come out to sing with masks on?

He'll never be able to sing on those kind of programs.

The second he starts singing, everyone will know who he is.

He is an irreplaceable legendary singer.

He is a beloved musician.

He is Kim Gun Mo.

My legs hurt.

All right. Let's go!

Here's one.

Everybody!

Hello, everyone. I'm Kim Gun Mo.

Thank you all for joining me today.

Now, I'd like to introduce you to the band behind me.

Would that be all right? - Yes.

Good.

The Lee Moon Se of pianists.

The Choo Sung Hoon of guitarists.

The Shim Soo Bong of keyboards players.

The Shin Seung Hun of keyboards players.

The Jo Sung Mo of bassists.

The Yurisangja of brass instrument players.

The Davichi of backup singers.

The Kim Heung Kook of drum players.

Go for it!

All right.

And I'm Kim Gun Mo.

Thank you.

You're sweating so much.

Please introduce yourself to our audience.

Sure. Hello.

I'm U Ji of Bestie. It's nice to meet you all.

Please say hello to our audience. - Sure.

I'm a solo artist, Kim Gun Mo.

Gun Mo's solo performance was amazing without a doubt,

but I was so impressed by their joint performance.

How do the two of you know each other?

I wanted to sing a duet,

so I was wondering with whom I should do it.

Then I happened to watch the show "Girl Spirit"...

and saw her singing in a school yard.

She was so good... - I see.

even though it was done outdoors. So I thought,

"I'd love to perform with her." - You wanted to perform U Ji.

Yes, I really wanted to perform with her. So I reached out to her,

and she gladly accepted my request.

It could've been a difficult decision as he's a senior artist.

Yes, that's right. He's so phenomenal and...

I... - Phenomenal...

Phenomenal? - I...

You think he's phenomenal? - To me,

he's like an idol because I'm a singer, too.

Right. It almost feels as if he's not a living person.

I know what you mean.

Don't say those things. - Gun Mo,

when did you debut? You debuted with the first song you sang, right?

What year was it released? - In 1992.

What year were you born?

I was born in 1991.

How did you feel when he asked you to perform with him? Be honest.

I was thrilled. It almost felt like a dream.

I've been singing professionally for about 10 years,

so I felt like all of my hard work was paying off.

I thought, "Something like this can happen to me, too."

Right. - I really thought that.

Even I don't feel comfortable around Gun Mo.

He's like a living fossil to me and my peers.

Yes. He's like an ancient dinosaur to me.

Exactly. - That's how I feel.

He's like the ancient bird. - Yes, totally.

Right. Then let me ask you this.

Have you learned anything from working with Gun Mo?

First of all,

I've always been amazed by how long he's been active in his career.

He has been a musician for ages. - Yes.

But I learned that he makes a lot of effort to be able to do that.

He practices so much, too.

Gun Mo practices? - Yes.

He practices a lot.

He's known for not practising at all.

I... - He wants people to think that.

I... - Yes.

never show anyone,

especially younger musicians. - Why not?

If they see me practising,

they'll practice, too.

Right, they'll also practice.

Then how am I going to beat them?

I have to make them think that I always go out and drink soju.

So you do that on purpose. - Only then, I can win against them.

They'll slack off, too. - That's right.

How inspiring.

Did he ask you to go out for drinks with him by any chance?

I used to have a very low alcohol tolerance,

but it increased after I met Gun Mo.

While working together on the album,

he kept saying that we have to become close.

We had to get to know each other first.

For example, when we sing high notes together,

we have to... - You and that old habit of yours.

We have to know what we need... - Goodness.

to sing together. - Let's talk more next time.

Please give U Ji a big round of applause.

Thank you. - Thank you.

Good work today. - Thank you very much.

Gun Mo hasn't been here in ages. - Yes.

Do you remember being here four years ago?

It was around Christmas. - That's right.

We travelled to the future. - We did.

We used to do a special annual show around the Christmas time...

where artists join us in special costumes.

Sung Si Kyung showed up as the character from "Avatar".

In one of the Christmas specials we did, Gun Mo did...

a performance called "Gun Mo's Time Flies".

That's right.

We actually performed together.

The performance was set in about 40 years from now,

but I was still the host of Sketchbook.

Gun Mo wheeled me in an wheelchair like this.

You remember doing that with me, right?

It was fun. - If was fun, indeed.

But I must say, you haven't changed or aged at all.

That's probably because...

I've been sticking to my disciplined daily routine for years.

I'm serious.

I always... - You're so disciplined.

I always act like a kid,

and I love playing pranks.

I try my best to stay young at heart.

As you all know, Gun Mo is in his second prime now.

No, no. - What's that show called again?

"My Ugly Duckling". - Right, that show.

Your second prime has arrived.

Let's give him a big hand, everyone.

Gun Mo, how long have you been pursuing music?

Hasn't it been...

about 30 years already?

If I include the time when I was in university...

I obviously started pursuing music before I debuted, so I think...

it has been exactly 30 years. - Right.

He has been a musician...

for about half of his life.

I'd like to give you a run down on all of his achievements.

U Ji also said earlier that you're a phenomenal artist.

Please don't do this.

I'm going to do it.

Kim Gun Mo.

He has lived half of a century.

Did you start playing the piano at the age of four?

Yes, that's right.

How is that even possible? When you were four...

My family lived right by a piano institute.

I think I hung out there often.

That's when I stared playing the piano.

I played the piano all through elementary school...

and stopped for a while as I got sick of it, then picked it up again.

My piano teacher made me practice "Czerny 30 New Studies" repeatedly.

Every time I went back, I had to start from Number One.

You had to start from scratch. - I went through...

the entire book over 20 times.

I kept quitting in the middle and starting again from the beginning.

That's why you have such a strong foundation.

"Czerny 30 New Studies". - The teacher had a reason.

I should thank that teacher. - Exactly.

You owe it all to that teacher.

You're right. - That's why you're still so good.

You're so right. - You all heard, right?

His fingers moved like this.

Gosh, I couldn't believe my eyes. - I use both hands for that.

How do you do it?

Show me again. I was so surprised earlier.

It sounds like he does it effortlessly, right?

This is...

It's really not easy to do. Can you do it one more time?

I was wondering where I heard it from.

Keep playing it.

All right.

"Mr. Kim Gun Mo, there's a call for you in the hotel lobby."

"Mr. Kim Gun Mo, please move your car."

That's probably where I heard it. Gosh, it's so cool.

Please give him another round of applause.

All right. Let me continue introducing you.

Thanks to that teacher, he gained strong foundational piano skills.
