New Orleans.
The most haunted city in America.
Where spirits walk among us...
and the living celebrate the dead.
And you've walked right into its most terrifying ward.
The Thirteenth and a Third.
I'm Soleil Le Claire,
and I'll be leading you on this gore tour.
Everything here has a bloody history.
Public executions were held right here.
If you listen close,
you can still hear the cries of the condemned.
- -
The Bleeding Hearts Club.
Watch out, it belongs to vampires!
If you're not careful,
you might just end up on the drink menu.
- -
What? Are you all not in the mood for a bite?
**
Ever heard of a rougarou?
Kind of like a werewolf with a New Orleans twist:
it feasts on the bones
-of wayward children. -
- -Huh?
Nice costume, dude.
-Okay, break's over, Dougie. -
Hey, anyone wanna slice?
Ah, c'mon. I signed up for this
because I heard there was some real stuff.
-We heard there's a cursed graveyard. Take us there!
I'm not supposed to.
But...
Welcome to Gravier.
**
**
Here in New Orleans, we bury our dead above ground.
So, in a way, the dead are always with us.
- -
Some of these mausoleums hold entire families.
That one is called Am Nan Pwizon.
"Soul Dungeon" in Creole.
Legend has it that Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen herself,
-built it to imprison a demon. -
He terrorized New Orleans.
Then, Marie Laveau cursed the land
to make sure the demon couldn't escape.
If you get too close...
the dead will drag you to the underworld.
Pfft. Sounds like another stupid story.
-Are you brave enough to find out?
-Um... -Brave face, dude.
- -
**
- -
What the--
- -
Gets 'em every time.
Woo!
**
Okay! That should do it.
Not bad, Soleil, not bad at-- Hey!
-Uh, sorry! Nice project.
-Yeah! -
- When most people think of voodoo,
they think of dolls to torture your enemies,
but that's a gross oversimplification
of a vibrant faith tradition.
In the voodoo religion, our Loa are spirits that guide us
and help us with everyday problems
-if we honor them with offerings. -
A Mambo, or Priestess,
can help us communicate with them
and channel their power.
Take Marie Laveau, for example.
People from all walks of life
sought her out for wisdom and help.
- Nice try, new kid.
You're never gonna convince us
your religion isn't super creepy.
Shut it, Missy.
I wanna hear this.
-Uh-oh. Looks like one of these guys is a little loose.
No, don't!
- -Ah!
You!
-Missy, wait, wait, wait! -Ah!
Blood fight!
-All right! -
Over here, dude.
Woo!
Ooh!
- -
- Huh?
Stanley, stop! Let go!
- -
Ugh, ah!
That tears it!
Everyone covered in blood, detention.
Aw, man!
And since you heathens
have been so disrespectful to the dead,
you can report to Aloysius Grey.
You will be cleaning the graveyard.
- -
-Yeah. Have some respect, you heathens.
- -Sorry, babe.
- -
So, is cleaning a graveyard
a normal detention here, or?
Yeah! Isn't it awesome?
Way better than being stuck doing homework.
Come on, we need to find the groundskeeper.
-If I miss dance practice tonight
because of this, I'll kill you.
-Me? You and your stupid boyfriend started the whole thing.
You two ruined the poor new kid's presentation.
Pat. My name is Pat.
And now that you know,
could you all call me Pat instead of "new kid"?
I've been at school for a month now,
and it would be nice if someone called me by my--
aaand everyone's gone.
Sorry. C'mon, Pat.
Your project was really cool by the way.
My mom says I'm related to Marie Laveau from,
like, forever ago.
Really? That's so awesome!
-Not for Marie. She has to be related to Soleil.
No one was talking to you.
-What's the deal with you and Missy?
-We used to be friends. We're not anymore.
Cool. Ha. Cool, cool, cool.
**
-Ah! There's dead people in there!
They want us to clean up dead people?!
Or just the outside, Stanley.
Ohh... with what?
-Uh, uh, maybe w-we should check there?
Maybewe shouldn't.
If no one shows up, we don't have to clean.
-Use your head, other new kid. Are you kidding?
Maybe's been in our class since kindergarten.
Maybe, you didn't do anything. You don't belong here.
-None of you do. -
You're all too, uh, alive.
- -
Some ground rules.
Don't open anything. If it's dead, leave it.
If it's dirty, clean it.
And don't go near Am Nan Pwizon.
You know it's cursed.
What curse?
-Somethin' about dyin' a slow and agonizin' death.
So, uh, don't give me another body to bury.
Soleil! You know this place better than anyone.
You're in charge.
- -
What? Al, I can't--
"Al"? You would be
on a nickname basis with the gravedigger.
Missy, curse. Remember?
-Don't you, like, pluck the wings off bats for fun?
You can't seriously be afraid of an old ghost story?
-I'm not afraid. -Prove it. Go in there.
Oh no, is that a dare?
-Maybe we shouldn't risk it. -I'll do it.
**
Whoa.
**
- -
Soleil!
-Go, little dude! Go! Jump, dude!
- -Come on!
Oh! Let's go.
-Missy, you forgot to come with us! -Gah!
**
Ew! Ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew.
Soleil?!
Ah! Stanley.
Heh. Sorry.
