When I talk to my son Archie about what he wants to be when he grows up,

some days it's an astronaut,

other days it's a pilot.

But what I remind him is that no matter what you want to be,

it's your character that matters most.

And nothing would make his mum and me prouder

than to see him have the character of what we see before us today.

I've always had myself down as being the dad

that I could never be serving while having kids.

Lucy was pregnant when I was shot. I came back from Iraq.

Lucy got pregnant in the summer. I was out in Afghanistan in September.

One of the guys that we lost, um,

his wife was pregnant with his son, George.

He's a young man now. He's 12.

Yeah, just that... You hear so many stories of that.

Guys who died over there and never met their kids.

It's never the individual signing up. It's the whole family.

After I was shot, I was in a fairly shit state.

The round traveled the length of my torso,

hit my ribs at the back, hit the ribs at the front,

rattled around a little bit like a pinball before coming to rest in my right lung.

And I stopped breathing.

And I stopped breathing a couple of times.

First of all, the wheelchair rugby final from 2014.

-That Friday night? -Yeah.

This match is being played at a frantic pace.

For me, it was watching Luke Sinnott run the 400 meters.

I think he was the only double amp on the start line.

The gun goes off,

and everyone just races ahead 'cause they've all got one leg

and he starts off so slowly.

And he is miles behind.

And I'm screaming for Luke. He's the only Brit in the race.

On the second corner, he's catching up. He's come level.

And the final 100 meters, he just takes everybody

and wins gold.

This sounds cheesy, but it's genuinely true.

I could see sort of like an analogy, a metaphor for... for recovery, right?

-He was so far behind everyone. - Yeah.

But he just kept plugging.

He wasn't meant to do the race, but one of the lads turned up

and it would mean he'd have no one to race against.

This weekend, wounded veterans from around the world

are taking part in the Invictus Games in London,

a tournament established for the first time this year

by Britain's Prince Harry.

We made a great start in London in 2014.

We took it to the next level in Orlando.

Toronto is going to draw the attention of the world.

Sport really does change lives,

and it saves lives as well.

I lost count of how many people,

wives, girlfriends, parents, grandparents, kids,

coming up to me saying, "Thank you for bringing my dad back."

"Thank you for putting a smile back on my husband's face."

And to be able to see these people's experiences

or their lives being changed for the better, this is a ripple effect.

They're inspiring everybody else at the same time.
