Dream Home Makeover

We're headed to Mapleton today.

I haven't been to Mapleton for a while.

Twelve years. Remember what happened in Mapleton?

Um... Like, our marriage?

-Our reception? -Our wedding reception was there.

-Yeah. -In a barn.

The last few months have been hectic. We've been working non-stop.

Still bringing that Studio McGee look to projects, no matter the size,

but our big projects have been getting even bigger.

You haven't met the Hansens yet,

but we've been working on their project for eight months.

We've started from the ground up.

The Hansens are an incredible family,

and with five children, they're also a very large family.

And so is the house that we're designing for them.

It's probably the largest square footage project

that we've ever taken on. I think it's 22,000 square feet.

Oh, my gosh.

The Hansen family's home

is one of the largest projects we've designed to date.

Seven bedrooms, seven and a half bathrooms,

and has an NBA regulation-size basketball court

in a barn attached to their house.

- This is kind of amazing. -It's beautiful, huh? Hi, guys.

It's looking so much better since the last time I was here.

-I'm so excited. -Nice to see you, bro.

I'm always hugging. There we go.

I'm Travis Hansen, and this is my lovely wife, LaRee.

We've been married 20 years this July.

I played professional basketball for ten years.

Played for the Atlanta Hawks, in Russia and Madrid.

Now I'm an entrepreneur.

We started off building a non-profit foundation called Sunshine Heroes

where we build children's centers around the world.

We've moved 13 times in 19 years.

We've traveled around the world for a beautifully long journey

and met amazing people,

but then we wanted to come home.

So, Syd, this is just a really beautiful hallway.

-It is a beautiful hallway. Good job. -

And then this is the great room.

The great room is over 1,500 square feet, which presents some unique challenges.

It's a large, open space with no divider walls,

and we need to make it feel homey and cozy

even though just their great room alone

is the size of our first rental house when we moved to Utah.

-You get so much light in here. - We got a lot of windows.

A lot of windows. I forgot how many. How many do we have?

- 130 or something. -

-Holy cow! -Yep. Yeah.

Who'll get the chore of cleaning the windows? Which kid?

I mean, one of the kids. We got five, we'll rotate.

Like, "Dad, I cleaned the windows twice this year."

-We'll rotate them. - We'll rotate them.

Yes.

We have five children. Our oldest is Ryder.

We have Mason, who's 12,

Zack, who is six,

Gwen, she's two years old.

Then we have Halle. She is ten and she's adopted.

We were told we wouldn't be able to have more children,

so adoption's always been in our hearts.

I'm so grateful for Halle's birth mom

for giving us the opportunity to raise her daughter.

She's so beautiful. She's the most beautiful girl.

That's our story, I'm sorry for getting emotional.

But adoption is a beautiful thing, so...

-You guys are so busy. -Really busy.

I just feel like your day looks like you living in your car.

Yes. I'm a total soccer mom, but my kids play basketball.

-So I'm a basketball mom. -Okay.

When we're home, we really like to congregate together,

and be together, and this space is gonna be perfect for that.

I'm so excited.

The Hansens have such an inspiring story,

and it's really exciting to be able to design this incredible home

for people that are also just really wonderful people.

So I have been thinking. I love the warm wood tones on the ceiling,

but I'm thinking I wanna change it to maybe white.

-Really? - Is that okay?

Tell me your thought process here.

I know we're in the mountains, but in the winter when everything's gray,

-I just wanna see white. It cheers me up. -Okay.

It definitely gives it a more coastal look and if that's what your dream home is,

then, like, let's do it.

I want to design a living space for Travis and LaRee that will last for generations,

but also comfortably fit a few generations.

The 1,500-square-foot great room will be divided into four connected living spaces.

The first space will be a family room,

centered around a giant limestone fireplace,

flanked by built-ins and an 80-inch TV.

Across from it, we'll place a sectional couch

big enough for all seven Hansens to gather and watch movies.

Next to the living room will be a separate seating area

with tables and chairs for reading or playing games

that flows directly into the dining room,

which will be anchored by a white oak table

that's over 16 feet long and will seat 14 people.

The final living space in the great room will be a spacious kitchen.

A 60-inch dual range, warm white-painted hood,

and two islands for additional storage and 12 more seats.

Let's look at the master bedroom.

Guys, this is amazing in here.

So big.

The vaulted ceilings are so beautiful.

-And it's bright. - I think it's fabulous.

This back wall in the middle of the vault is where we will center the bed.

Sweet.

We need something pretty tall because we've got some tall ceilings.

I know Travis is hesitant about a canopy bed,

but I think it will look pretty good in here.

-Nobody wants a canopy bed. I mean... -

He's gonna hit his head getting out of the canopy bed.

-Oh, my gosh. -

We're gonna head to the other side of the house and check out...

- The triple B, big baller barn. - The big baller barn! Holy cow!

- Wow. No joke. - Oh, yeah.

Is this not the most beautiful basketball court you've ever seen?

I just wanna cry for you. This is amazing.

You dream about being able to build something like this.

I would love to see you play one-on-one with Travis.

I would just get owned.

You know how when they take the golden retrievers hunting,

and it softly carries a dead bird in its mouth?

I would just get owned like that.

Hi, Will, how are you?

-How are you doing? -Good!

-This is regulation size, right? -Yeah.

You have the basketball standards able to raise and lower from the ceiling.

I always wanted to coach, and you need access to a gym,

especially for basketball. It's tough to find gyms,

so we felt like if we had the ability to build one,

let the community use it, we'd do it.

It has another little wrench,

so you can bring it down to eight feet for kids, which is cool.

-Or me. -

We have all of these exposed trusses right now,

and there's been a lot of debate on what to do with these trusses.

I would love to able to wrap them and make them look natural,

just 'cause I do love the warmth in here.

But my option would be to paint everything white.

We're seeing a lot of white right now because we don't have

any of the additional materials that will go in here,

so I think that we have to try to think to that next step

when we will have the wood floors.

This is why we pay you the big bucks, to make these choices.

If there's nothing you're freaking out

that I need to go work on, I'll go work on furniture.

Business is growing, the girls are growing.

I don't want to blink and then wake up, and it's all over and I've missed it.

So, now is so important to spend quality time with the girls.

-I went and got some waterschmelon and... -Oh!

Cantaloupe!

Canta-freaking-loupe, dude.

She's like Syd. She loves food.

- Canti-loupe. - Some canti.

I had two pieces.

She could probably eat an entire cantaloupe herself in one day.

Yep.

Guys, we gotta soak up summer. I feel like it's already going fast.

What's you guys' favorite thing about summer?

- Everything. - Everything.

The pool. Shaved ice.

-Cantaloupe. -

I guess that was dinner. I don't have to cook, right?

-We could make nachos if you want. -

-No. -No! It caught on fire!

I know.

I'm so embarrassed to admit that I burned nachos,

but I burned them.

Some would say, "incinerated."

Were they burnt, or were they on fire?

-On fire. -Like flames.

Our children will never want nachos again.

I can't do fireworks anymore. You can't do nachos anymore.

We do furniture presentations with all of our full-home projects.

These are multi-million-dollar projects with huge furniture budgets.

My thought was, like, you have this farmhouse exterior,

but a lot of the finishes inside aren't necessarily farmhouse, right?

So, we're going with "cool farmhouse."

-Elevated farmhouse, right? -I love it.

We're going to go soft and pretty on the furniture

and then add in rustic elements here and there.

You walk into those double doors,

and your entryway's so large, we were able to put a full settee.

Wow.

A whole sofa, basically.

-That's awesome. -A full what?
