The first 200 lines.
Crickets chirping
match striking
fire whooshing...
- That's all you got? - Lazy bones.
All right, let's go get you a snack.
How's my June spirit looking?
He's good.
It's just, he's still holding something back.
With his frame, he should be blowing his cousins out of the water.
Well.
You know they can have all the ability in the world, but if
they don't have the drive
phone rings...
Hey, mom.
Yeah, I know.
I'm leaving soon.
It's fine.
I'll get ready quick.
I don't need a shower.
Okay, we're good.
I forgot that I have dinner with my cousins, so I gotta run.
Well, get to steppin'. And maybe a quick shower.
And, uh, maybe a quick shower.
Well, it can be a little rough waking up early, but I love
being able to work with horses.
You get to form real relationships with them.
You know, they all have their own personality.
Well, they don't talk back.
I bet that makes the relationship easier.
Actually, that's a part of the challenge.
Because when there's a problem, they can't actually tell you
what's going on.
So you have to form a real bond with them to be able to feel
what they're feeling.
So you're like a therapist too?
Kinda, yeah.
Well, I guess veterinary school wasn't a total waste.
- Get home safe. - Love you.
Bye.
Well, that was nice.
Yeah.
What's wrong?
Nothing. I'm fine.
Honey, is this about veterinary school?
I was just making a joke.
It's just you spend all that time and money studying
veterinary medicine, you might
actually want to make some of it back.
You know that top trainers make more than vets, right?
Uh huh.
And how many of these top trainers are there?
I don't need you to be supportive, but at least
respect me enough to not talk about it all the time.
I do support you, honey.
I just don't want you to get stuck the way I did.
You know?
You can chase something with all your heart and still not
get it.
And then you have to pivot.
But at that point, you are starting three steps and a
decade behind.
Look, I just don't want you to struggle the way I did.
I'm not going to struggle.
I'm going to be doing what I love.
Honey, it's not that simple.
You have to think about your future.
I am thinking about my future.
This is what I want to do.
There she is.
Hey, Reggie.
I'm afraid I'm gonna have to let you go, kid.
What?
You got an opportunity to pursue.
How's he ride, Jenny?
Well, he's not gonna be a racing horse, but I'll take him
as a pony. Just doesn't have the juice.
Not all of them want it.
Isn't that right, Reg?
Well, they gotta be born with it.
Like this one here.
Jennifer Rosemont.
Kara Miller.
Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you.
Tells me you're a good hand.
No, I didn't.
I said she was the best.
Jenny's looking for some new blood for a stable.
I worked with her dad back when
she was too small to ride a pony.
What do you say, Kara?
Want to come work under me for the season?
I would love to.
Here's the cream of the crop.
Shadow Gaze. I'm running him in the derby this spring.
Hi, boy.
You're gonna help me get him ready.
Hey, Aunt Jen.
I just finished anchoring the fence post at uh...
This is my nephew, Justin.
Kara's coming on as our new assistant trainer.
Hey.
Nice to meet you.
You, too.
Why don't you finish showing her around, huh?
I've got to talk to your grandma.
And then after you're settled, why don't you take Shadow out
for hand graze?
So you're a vet too, huh?
Not quite.
I never finished my residency.
I just always wanted to train them.
Does your family own a farm?
I grew up in downtown Lexington, so not really a lot
of farms.
My grandpa used to take me to the races when I was a kid, and
right from the start, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.
My mom wanted me to go to med school, so I split the
difference with her.
My dad wanted me to get my MBA.
I just told him no.
So we're both disappointments.
I guess so.
This... is a house.
Yeah. It's pretty old though.
I think that it has... history.
Is there somewhere I can wash up?
Yeah, just in the hall to the right.
I'll be in the sun room that way when you're done.
I guess I'll call if I get lost.
I think you'll be fine.
I understand that perhaps no one does more than I do, but we
are in a bit of a hole right now, and that holes gets a whole lot
deeper if we don't bring in some investment.
We are hemorrhaging money right now, Mom.
Rosemont is about more than the racing.
We are a brand.
So why aren't we looking at merchandising?
Why don't we bring the public through for some paid tours?
Who's gonna mind the snack bar?
That's cute Jen. Won't you join me while I
focus on the bigger picture here?
Well, I could use you focusing on what we're doing here.
I don't see how bringing your country club buddies into
the family business can help us either.
Well, we need to do something, Jen.
Yeah, well, we wouldn't be in hole at all if you hadn't
mismanaged this place.
Here we go.
This brand used to have some real value.
We have an important season starting soon and a horse that
can make some real noise.
If we win the Lexington derby and turn the stable around, we
won't need any outside help.
We can do this on our own.
Mom.
Jennifer is the head of operations now.
She has the final word.
Why am I not surprised?
Are you okay?
Be right back.
Why do you do that?
You know she's not doing well.
Well, what do you think's helping more, Jen?
Your little jabs are constantly reminding everybody
about Stephen's failures.
Maybe if she didn't drink so much, or wouldn't
have to listen to all of your little jabs.
You're the reason why we're here, your mismanagement.
I am trying, Jen.
No. You pick the wrong horses.
You don't know what you're doing.
Stephen, just trust me.
Just stop questioning my authority.
Let me do my job.
Why can't you ever just take my side just one time?
This isn't about sides, Stephen.
This is about the future of our family.
- Family, huh? - That's rich.
Stephen.
Do you want to lie down?
Are you sure?
He's always bucked against authority.
Having his little sister telling him what to do goes
against all of that.
I can't manage him and the stable at the same time.
At least when dad was alive, he'd get in line eventually.
Well, I wouldn't suggest that you treat him the way your father did.
Tempting.
Who's that with Justin?
It's my new assistant trainer.
How is she?
- She seems like a good one. - We'll see.
Kara, can you come over here?
Now, if you need me to make a
decision for you, do something official.
I can handle it.
All right.
But I may not be around much longer to go between you two.
Don't talk like that, Mom.
