Have you ever wondered if you're the smartest person in the room,
your office, or maybe even your hometown?
What if I told you that by answering a series of questions,
you could find out how your brain stacks up against all of America.
Think you'd be smarter than half the country, top 10%,
or maybe even the top 1%?
Our questions are designed to test logic, common sense,
and how your brain actually works.
Doesn't matter where you went to school or what you do for a living.
This show levels the playing field for everyone,
so I'll be doing the asking tonight.
And here to do the answering are these 100 contestants!
Can any of them answer a question only 1% of the country could get right
for a chance to win up to $100,000?
I'm Patton Oswalt, and it's time to play The 1% Club.
- -
Best of luck to all 100 of you playing here tonight.
And don't forget, you can play at home, too.
All you gotta do is download The 1% Club app
and see how you stack up.
Before we kick things off with our first question, here's how the show works.
We asked people from all over the United States a list of our unique questions.
Based on their answers, we can tell statistically
what percentage of the country should get each one right.
Tonight, we'll be asking those exact questions to our 100 contestants,
beginning with the one that 90% of America got right,
and ending with a question that only 1% of the American public answered correctly.
At the start of each show, every contestant is given a $1,000 stake.
If they get any question wrong, they're out of the game
and the thousand dollars is transferred to the prize pot.
Whoever gets the furthest tonight gets the chance to answer
the final 1% question to win everything in the prize pot
and take home up to $100,000.
All right. Time for our first question of the night.
This is the 90% question.
Remember, 90% of Americans got this right.
So this should be a walk in the park for most of you.
Why would I put that much pressure on you guys? That was mean.
Okay. Let's take a look.
Which hot air balloon photo cannot be real?
Contestants, your time starts now.
By the way, this photo was taken right before I attempted
to circumnavigate the globe, and I made it as far as Bakersfield.
Okay, your time is up.
Now, let's see how many of you got the question right
and how many of you are out of the game.
Four of you went out on this one, which means we have 96 left.
So let's look at the answer.
It was B. You can tell B is altered
because the hot air balloon doesn't match its reflection.
Now, someone who got it right is Rebecca.
-Oh! -With the little pageant wave.
-Oh, delightful. -
-Are you a pageant winner? -Yes.
-Miss Ultimate Beauty of America. -Miss Ultimate Beauty of America.
-I was third runner up. -
I threw up during the talent portion. I don't want to talk about it.
-Bless your heart. - All right.
Someone who got it wrong was Tymica.
-Hi! -Hi! Now...
You're from St. Louis and you're a crochet artist?
I am. Yeah.
Did something throw you on this question or what happened?
I knew the answer. I just hit the wrong button.
Shouldn't you have smart enough fingers to know which ones...?
I should, but they didn't connect to my brain, so...
-Okay. -Yeah.
-No offense, but not an excuse. I'm sorry. -I know.
-Tymica, thank you. -Thank you.
All right. Someone else that got it right was Raffi.
-Yeah. Right. -A science teacher from Tustin?
Raffi is the closest I've ever come so far to working with Robert De Niro.
Look, you, you're good. You know?
-Feeling pretty good, huh? -Little bit. Little bit.
-Little bit? -Yeah.
-Not bad? -Little bit. Little bit.
All right, so the thousand dollars of everyone who got the question wrong
goes into the prize pot,
and that brings the prize pot up to...
- -$4,000. Great job.
For those of you who are still in the game,
it is time for the 80% question.
Let's take a look.
Logically, which one can you count on to come next in the sentence below?
Contestants, your time starts now.
-I do my quads to this music, by the way. -
Your time is up.
Now, let's see how many of you got the question right
and how many of you are out of the game.
- - Whoa!
We lost 31 people on an 80% question.
Wow. What happened? Let's have a look at the answer.
B. Each word in a sentence has one more letter than the previous one.
So the next word must have five letters.
Well, someone who got it right is Angel from San Antonio.
Angel! Hi, Angel.
Now, this I really respect, Angel.
-Yeah? -You were born with one kidney.
-Yes. -But it says you're a lightweight drinker
because of it. Most people born with a kidney were like,
"Well, I probably shouldn't drink." You're like, "I'm going to adjust it.
-I'm still going to drink." -You only get to live one life.
-You gotta have the margarita. -That is a Viking attitude! I love that.
Now, what would you do with $100,000 if you won?
Oh, I'd build myself a luxury horse barn.
-A luxury horse barn? Really? -Yes. I have a horse, I have a donkey,
-I've got four goats. -Wait a minute.
When you say luxury horse barn, is the luxury for the animals
-or for the people that work in the barn? -For both of us.
-For both. -For both.
You and your one kidney, you're going to make it.
-Right. -All right? Okay.
Well, 31 people just went out.
So here's what's about to happen.
The thousand dollars of everyone who got the question wrong
goes into the prize pot, which brings the prize to...
$35,000.
That's right.
We are benefiting from other people's failure.
Great job to those of you who are still in the game.
It's time for the 70% question.
Let's take a look.
Answer the following question:
Contestants, your time starts now.
See, this is why always split the check. All right?
Not going to get caught in these awkward predicaments.
All right, your time is up. Now, let's see how many of you got the question right
and how many of you, unfortunately, are out of the game.
We only lost seven people. All right.
Which means we've got 58 of you left.
And the answer was... Wednesday.
In the paragraph above, Wednesday is the name of a person,
not a day of the week.
- -Someone who got it wrong,
gosh darn it, Christian!
-You wrote down Bill. -I was looking for a name.
And Bill was up there and I know a lot of Bills.
Okay, well, it's not even capitalized.
Or were you thinking maybe Bill is a freeform poet
-or something like that or...? -Yeah, I tried.
Thanks for playing the game, Christian. Thank you.
Now, someone who got this right was Ethan.
- Yes. -
Okay. You are the third fastest at something in the United States,
and it's something I've never heard of. Fin swimming!
-Yes. -What does that mean?
I'm not going to affiliate myself with the mermaid community,
but it's one... it's one giant mono fin we race in.
It's the fastest form of swimming in the entire world.
I'm sorry. What is it about the mermaid community
that you don't want to associate yourself with? Are they...?
I didn't know. Is there a scandal in that community that I didn't know about?
Mermaids tails are all draggy. They're slow.
You know, fin swimming is about speed, man. You know, we fly.
You know, it's something you gotta train in for real.
I didn't know fin swimming existed,
and I didn't know they were at war with the mermaid community.
So this needs to be addressed in Congress.
-Very true. -Best of luck.
-Thank you. -You and your one fin. All right. Well...
Now, as you all know, what happens, well, we take the thousand dollars
from everybody who missed that one. We put it in the big cash cavern,
and that takes it all the way up to...
$42,000.
Now, it is time for the 60% question.
Let's take a look.
If you turn this photo right side up, which part would be wrong?
Contestants, your time starts now.
She really needs to get a refund for whoever made her that fake ID.
All right, your time is up. Now, let's see how many of you got the question right
and how many of you are out of the game.
- - We lost ten people,
which means we've got 48 of you left.
So let's see what the answer was.
The mouth is upside down when the photo is right side up.
Oh, God. Let's see.
Oh, no, Rebecca!
Our pageant queen is gone!
-I know! -Rebecca, we were counting on you!
-I was counting on me too! -Oh, my gosh.
I feel like she just looks upset to go to work. Who wants to go work?
Well, yeah, but you put "top part." So I don't...
The top part of her lip. You know, because she's, like, so sad.
-It's believable. Come on. -Rebecca, I'm so sorry.
-Thank you so much for playing. -Thank you.
Give a pageant wave. Thank you. Delightful, yes.
Oh, but guess who got it right? Angel!
- - Angel!
-Boom! All right. -
Well, that was amazing.
Now, as you all know, the thousand dollars of everyone who got the question wrong
goes into the prize pot, which brings it up to...
$52,000. We're at $52,000.
