Dream Home Makeover - Third Season

I'm, like, a little bit nervous how you're driving while tacoing.

-Hey, it's not my first time. -

I've driven under the influence of taco before.

How are you gonna help me?

-I'm just gonna... I'll hand it to you. -Whoa, babe! Oh my gosh.

- -That is so much safer.

- I think it's this one up here. - Okay.

- Their house is so cute. - It's really cute.

- Hey, guys. -Hi. I'm Shea.

-I'm Cindy. Good to meet you. -Good to meet you.

-Hi. -Hi. Syd.

- And who is this? - This is Pepper.

- This is Pepper, hi! - Hey, bud.

-He come for our meeting? - Yes.

- This is beautiful. - Thank you.

- How long have you guys lived here? -Just a year and a half.

- Really? -Year and a half.

We moved from down the street.

-Oh, okay. - Okay.

-Nine houses away, same floor plan. - Nine houses.

-Okay. Same floor plan? - Exact same.

Oh my gosh. That's awesome. What drew you to this house?

- If it was the same fl... -The view.

-Okay, well, can we... Can we see the view? - Absolutely.

- This is beautiful. - Oh, you guys, this is so awesome.

- This is why... - Feel that air and the sunshine.

-This is why we moved nine houses. - Yes, you can see the ocean.

Absolutely.

I've always grown up on the water. It's just always been a part of my life.

So, I just always have this attraction to it.

It wasn't so important to me until we got here.

- Right. -And now I wouldn't trade it for anything.

-It's pretty dreamy here. -It is.

It's true. Like our own little sanctuary.

We could enjoy this beautiful view,

but I'd like to see what we're doing inside.

Lead the way. Let's go look.

-This is the kitchen. - Big, open area, but...

A bit outdated. This actually was the model home,

when they were selling the homes in the development.

When was it built?

-Nineteen years ago. Yes. - Nineteen years ago.

So, what about the kitchen works for you?

Not a lot.

Um, this is in very good shape, but really outdated.

When we had someone come in to clean,

we were like, "Okay, could you clean up the grout?"

And he called Rob, and what he said...

This is not dirty. This is stained yellow grout.

- Like, that was the thing. -That was the style.

-So this... This is not dirty. -Oh! Not old yellow grout.

It's... It's... This is the way... This was the design.

They were like, "Should we go with, like, salted butter?"

I mean, the bones are fantastic.

So much light comes in, and obviously the view.

It's just very dated,

and we just would like to see it

elevated to this room that we wanna be in.

-The appliances are in such beautiful... -Yeah, I mean, they're in great shape.

They are workhorses, they will not die, they're... they're great shape.

So, you wanna keep 'em?

- No. No -I'm just joking.

-Uh, no. - Isn't that cool now?

Like, the '90s thing is cool. High-waisted jeans are back.

- Mm-hmm. Yeah. -Do you want it for your house?

No. I don't look good in high-waisted jeans.

Does the peninsula-island situation work for you?

Like, because what I'd love to do

is take out this small island and the peninsula,

and then do one really large island.

Yes, it definitely does not work for us. It's definitely not working.

Do you guys feel like you use the storage in there?

Um...

Don't worry. That's, like, the one design question I'll ask.

Shea's like, "Whoa, get back in your lane, buddy. Get back in your lane."

-We don't have a pantry. -Oh, okay.

Do you like the pass-through? Because if we added a wall here,

you'd be able to get more cabinetry and more storage.

-I think it should be shut up. - Okay.

So, my plan is that we will take out this island and the peninsula,

and then really start with the design of this back wall as the focal wall.

And then we could keep the fridge on this wall

-but go wide... Like, with a larger fridge? -Yes.

And also a counter-depth, because right now,

it's kind of sticking out into the pathway,

so if we do a counter-depth fridge,

you'll... it'll just feel like there's... Better.

I don't wanna do all white,

'cause I think we're carrying in the white,

and you'll probably end up with some sort of,

like, white neutral on the backsplash and the countertops,

and so I'd love to... I'd love to add a little bit of saturation.

Not li... Not dark, but just a little bit of something.

When you talk about color, I'm...

-I'm freaked out a little bit. -It makes you nervous? Okay. Okay.

-But... I know... -I actually am sweating right now.

-I'm like... Woo! -I'm not sweating, you're sweating.

However, I love all of your designs, so I feel like I could trust you on that.

-Shea will do you right. -I'm sure of it.

-Coastal, airy, natural. - I will. I will do you right.

This project has tons of potential.

The square footage of the space is great.

We just need to shift the floor plan around

and incorporate colors that feel light and airy and coastal.

We'll remove the peninsula and existing island

and install one large island with enough space for a farmhouse sink,

a new dishwasher, and room for several people to sit and gather.

To really highlight the coastal feel,

we'll create a focal point out of the range wall.

We'll add a wide, modern gas range and stove

with a Spanish-style plaster hood,

ceiling-to-counter cabinets with leaded glass window accents,

counter-to-ceiling tile,

and floating shelves for easy access and display.

Finally, we'll close off the pass-through to the dining room

and create a butler's pantry.

We'll use the same backsplash and cabinets as the rest of the kitchen

and mix in some additional open storage, with butcher block countertops

to add some warmth and functionality.

I'm so excited to have this space make as much of a statement as the view.

Could you guys tell us why the view is so important?

Because you were moving for that. I know it's beautiful.

Yes. Well, we were having the debate

where I wanted to put in the pool at the other house,

and he was thinking about it. Then...

He has a congenital heart defect.

Ever since I've known him,

he's known about it and had a couple of open-heart surgeries.

So, we knew that his second valve was bad and it'd need to be replaced.

So, we were waiting for his cardiac team to decide what they were gonna do.

And he had a sudden cardiac death.

It took seven minutes for the ambulance to get there.

I mean, they had to shock him three times.

They were having a hard time getting him back.

Yeah.

So...

after that... ...it changed everything.

I go to the hospital and the nurses asked him,

"What are your goals?"

And he's got on there, "Project Viewhouse."

Literally, he had the nurse write on the board.

-He's, like, ready to go. - Yeah.

-We're... I'm like, "Wait a minute." - Back it up.

-"Let's get your heart fixed first." -

What we've learned is that you do not wait for things to happen.

You go out and make them happen.

So, that happened in April, and by December we were in this house.

We had bought this house.

So, it's just... It's our dream. I mean, this is truly our dream home.

I love that, like, you had something that was, you know, so scary

it made you probably change your outlook on how you live day to day,

and you can tell the love that you guys have for each other is very strong,

-and that's really, really sweet. -Agreed.

-Yep. For sure. -You make things happen.

-Don't wait for it. Do not wait. -That's right. Make it happen.

Hearing about Rob's near-death experience

and their decision to just go for their dreams,

it's inspirational,

and it also makes me want to

just give them the kitchen of their dreams.

Pepper looks like me after eating, like, six donuts.

When you were a little baby, Wren,

your mom used to walk this trail with you every day.

One of the best things about having projects in Southern California

is that sometimes we get to bring the girls along

and share a bit of our old lives with them.

Like surfing.

That was part of your old life though. Not mine.

Doesn't look very mellow today.

-You think the girls are ready for this? -I don't know.

Right here. Let's stop right here, girls.

I think that you just love action, adventure,

and putting our girls in dangerous situations.

What are you gonna do, put them in a padded room?

This is in their blood, man.

She was in there for, like, five minutes.

-If it's a cute outfit, the water's warm. -A cute board and cute wetsuit, she's in.
